I hate how absolutely catchy and "lovely" this song is and yet when you really pay attention to the lyrics you just see how he's being so possessive and disregarding of his wife and controlling and it all becomes even worse when you remember he was about to hit her before this song and UGH.

Jaime Monteleone never ever getting rid of me isn't creepy, it's more cute. Earl is so creepy and stuff. I bet if dawn had really, really wanted ogie to leave he would've, but she didn't.

Zoe Belle I know! That’s what i mean. The sad part is that Earl is really just trying to repair his own life, because he believes that Jenna is the only person that could ever love him and that fact leads him to think that he owns her. Also, he just got fired from Taco Bell. Bro’s got a hard life.
I don't know how anyone could feel sorry for Earl. He's an abuser. He controls Jenna's money, has to know where she is at all times, forces her to have sex (rape), almost hit her until she told him she was pregnant, belittles her, and says over and over that she can't leave him. Unless the Waitress musical changed his character, I'm going off the movie. This song is perfect for Earl. It shows his controlling nature and his general disinterest in his wife, other than seeing her as his object. I used to always skip this song when it would come on because I didn't care for the beginning, but now that I've listened to the lyrics many times, I love it. Jenna's voice is so weak in it, to show what he does to her. Sara Bareilles is an amazing writer.

@@chriswalker8261 Wait, there’s a movie? I’m new to waitress the musical.
I love how this sounds like a romantic promise of undying love, while "Never Ever Getting Rid of Me" sounds creepy and possessive. And then in context, it's actually the opposite.
Signs Earl is an abuser in this song: 1. He talks about his six string, but forgets what Jenna had, which shows disinterest and self centered-ness (if that’s even a word lol) 2. He’s very possessive, as he keeps talking about how she loves/loved him and how she’s his 3. He forgot the lines to the song that made Jenna fall in love with him in the first place 4.He says that a lot is happening to him for the most part, when really a lot more things are happening to Jenna, he just, like I said, shows disinterest in her life and her feelings. 5. At the end, each time he’s says “Mine” the music and his tone of voice gets more sinister, especially that pause before the last mine. 6. Um hello?? Jenna sounded v uncomfortable throughout when she forced herself to pretend she was his. She sounded scared in the tone of her voice at the fact that he considered her his.

Interesting trends in the comments... Earl has a powerful voice that people are drawn to, he gets sympathy for what happens at the end of the play. Ogie is an oddball, quirky, and even if he eventually and rightfully earns Dawn's affections, people still find him creepy. Earl is a known abuser, and Ogie is just awkward and a loner. We don't exactly know for sure why Jenna is with Earl. He's gross, abusive, a drunk. We know for sure that Dawn and Ogie find common ground later on, they bond over American Revolutionary War reenactments and they probably find even MORE common ground later on. Ogie is more deserving of Dawn's love than Earl is of Jenna's. Yet the audience can't help it for some reason. Yo that's fucked up and probably really good writing/characterization. Bareilles, you maaaaad genius.

Concerning Ogie, I never saw him as less deserving. He and Dawn are both oddballs and though he was a bit creepy in the beginning, she eventually accepted him and found it endearing - so I'm absolutely fine with how they found each other. Now to Earl.. I like to look at it this way: As you said, Earl has a voice that draws people to him. To me, it seems like he is the type of man who is very attractive and fetching when you get to meet him because it serves a purpose for him (getting a girl or else). I also do believe that he cares for her a lot but is way too possessive to realise that she is trying to get farther and farther away. This "being alluring" imo is represented in the tone of his voice. We are attracted to him for what he pretends to be (first glance / his voice) and only then, it slowly starts to sink in what he is actually saying and how possessive he is. I believe it's the same for Jenna. She was once attracted to him (probably when she was mistreated and was desperate for love). In those situations, you cling to anything that resembles love. I assume that they were happy in the beginning and just like we react to this song, she rather quickly goes from "He's what I was looking for" to "He's a creep and I need to get away" once he started being abusive.

SaiUrchin I’ve always felt like Our Love is God was sort of out of place. Between the comedic aspect of Kurt shouting and not really knowing what’s up and and the lyrics talking about dinosaurs, it was a track I didn’t really _get_. After some time I finally felt like I got it: the lyrics drive home the whole “we have power over everyone else’s life” thing that JD believes in (as Veronica states in Seventeen) and then she finds out JD was serious about it. I love that both songs make the end sound quite sinister and dissonant to make sure the audience gets how dangerous both characters are. The thing with Kurt has always stuck to me… I always felt extremely bad for him. If you read his dialogues without JD singing over him, it shows how scared he was and how powerless he felt. I kind of wished for a little more of the jocks in the soundtrack, but I guess you can’t really make a ten hour musical
It's interesting how the concept of forever is so romantic when you're young and in love, but when you're in a loveless and abusive marriage, it's hella scary
This song is so well done. It shows how obsessive and creepy earl is while also showing how jenna got caught up with him because he started out nice

He's totally abusive. He takes her tips when she's working as a waitress, she has to hide money to get away from him, and he was about to hit her before she revealed that she was pregnant. Then he started singing about how she belonged to him, and how she was "mine" instead of her own person. The song is really nuanced in that that's the song that led to them falling in love, so it's obvious that there was a time when he was either a) not abusive, or b) Jenna was too starstruck to see his toxicity.
@MegaBecks1981

There are hints throughout the song of his abuse. He doesn’t care enough about her to remember what made her special. “You had your own thing, though I don’t remember what it is” And the way he threatens her instead of showing his love “No turning back now babe, you’re my family, now promise me.” Control, not love. In contrast, the song she sings with the doctor, “You matter to me,” is a song about love.
I wish I had the chance to see you live. RIP Nick Cordero 😔💕
