Thomson I'm in agreement that she's extremely versatile and powerful (and I'll add wonderful), but I've got to ask what you define as "the typical Broadway voice," because over so many years, I've heard all kinds of wonderful (and not so much), quite different, and often versatile singing instruments from Broadway performers.

+AvalonMorley I would say most Broadway singers have trained voices (which isn't a bad thing). Jessie Mueller has a very natural-sounding voice compared to many other singers on Broadway and it's kind of refreshing.

Jessie doesn't have a powerful voice for Broadway, and that's why some people don't favor her as well. So she was never formally trained in musical theatre? Didn't she go to Syracuse? Actually Jessie is very limited in regard to versatility as a Broadway actress. Her voice is great for Carole King and Sara Barseilles music, but her voice wouldn't be appropriate for most Broadway shows. She could never play Christine in "Phantom", for example. Actually even Laura Osnes or most Broadway actresses don't have the vocal chops for Christine. So that may be a bad example.

I think if you watch the evolution of her interpretation, you will see that she beefed up her chest register by a considerable amount to the point where her belted notes aren't relying on head voice as much, she is definitely very agile and versatile in her coloring, however her tessitura is more of a mezzo than a soprano, so you can't compare her with coloratura roles a la Phantom of the Opera. It is just a different voice register. Those light coloratura voices actually themselves aren't versatile and couldn't sing the lower parts of this song. What is versatile in her voice is the fact that despite having a lower tessitura, she can still sound candid, young and fragile. Jennifer Nettles for example clearly sounds like a mezzo and has a much dark timbre.

When Sara Bareilles released her album version of this back in October of last year, I was 6 months pregnant with my first child, recently single and I would play this song almost every day while I showered and cry my soul out. As ironic as is sounds, it was a very empowering ritual I had going on, to this day nobody knows that this song, these lyircs got me through a very dark time and now I'm the mother of the most amazing little boy and he loooves when I dance and sing with him all the upbeat Waitress songs. I can't wait to watch Jessie Mueller performs this when I go watch the show in August.

Please, no it isn't. Brush up on your Tony history! The original Broadway production of "Les Miserables" won a WHOPPING 9 Tony Awards, and the media referred to "Les Miz" as the Broadway "show of all shows." It's ridiculous that you'd ever compare this crap to "Les Miserables."

If I'm going to see a play I'm just going to watch someone act. If I'm going to a musical I'm going to see the acting and the dancing and the singing. Although plays can have music/sound effects and usually do I'm not going to a play with the expectation that I'm going to see someone sing/dance.

Saw her sing this song with 100x more power and emotion tonight. I didn't think it was possible but bravo Jessie.

I am so happy Jessie and Sara found each other for this project. I honestly don't know what other Broadway actress could pull off this difficult of a song with the skill and finesse that Jessie demonstrates here. Already purchased my tickets for May.

This is one of the Broadway songs for the ages, like "Memories" or "Send in the Clowns" and Jessie makes it SO intense that it is hard to watch and yet you can't get enough of it!

After hearing the Sara B version, I thought there was no bearing it, but this is incredible in its own right.

Amen! In 2023, I still think this is the best Broadway song of this century. It was the one error of the Hamilton sweep that this didn't win. I guess, as they say, timing is everything!😢

The vulnerability in her voice gives her rendition more expression and thus more captivating.

It's strange, the album version of this seems to have a really overstated, grating country accent (and I don't even hate all country music, I quite like some). This version if so raw, emotional, and powerful, and her singing is so natural. She doesn't sound like she's putting anything on, she sounds like she's living the story.

That grating accent you speak of is called Appalachian dialect it’s how I and many people speak. She nails it.

In Aug. 2023, this is the first version of this song that I saw (I've been "away from Broadway"for awhile😢). A week later, after watching various performances more than a hundred times, I've noticed that most people go bigger (and this includes Jessie's later Broadway performances). Yet, this smaller version is the one that I ALWAYS come back to. Plus, the Beatific look on her face at the end is just perfection on top of perfection!💕 Thank you, Jessie, for giving me my favourite song, and performance, ever.🥰

Omg. Tears, just tears. Beautifully written. So beautifully acted. It's like watching a life time of painful, bitter, and happy memories compressed into its essence seeping from this woman's soul. I watched it several times before even noticing the sounds of cameras or anyone else in the room!

I'm not crying, you're crying. Absolutely amazing. Jessie is one performer I have always looked up to.

I want to be Jessie Mueller when I grow up. Or else marry her.

Jessie brings such humanity and honesty to this character. I cry listening to her sing this song because I can just feel her singing about losing the person that she once was.

I love that there isnt much going on in the scene here. Not an eye catching background, not much movement. Its all her. Theres no additional attention grabbers because the raw emotion and expression is enough to make you not dare to look away

I've watched this more times than I care to admit. So beautifully performed. She has so much nuance in this--look at her face right before she sings "She is hard on herself..."

+Samuel Reed The race for Best Actress is so tight this year that I think it's a bit presumptive to make a prediction at this point, especially considering a few of the shows (including Waitress) are still in previews. I expect to see Audra McDonald, Cynthia Erivo, Phillipa Soo, and probably Laura Benanti on the nomination list along with Mueller, and most of the early buzz seems to be favoring Erivo.

she’s always going to be the best jenna and you can’t change my mind

i constantly come back to this when i feel i’m lacking drive in perusing a career in musical theatre. i fucking love this performance. jessie mueller inspires me with every single role she plays, he vocal abilities are in my opinion unmatched and her ability to adapt to any role she takes is astounding. she is truly an inspiration.

I don't think anyone playing the part of Jenna will ever be able to top Jessie. I think that acting ability is often overlooked by how well you can sing or dance in musical theatre but Jessie Mueller has an incredible talent in the area. This song was made for her.

If you're in New York just go see this. I watched it last night and I was blown away by Jessie Mueller. Her raw emotion her voice and characterisation, personally couldn't fault it. It's a real tear jerker but supported by plenty of laughs, especially from Ogi. The score and cast are just amazing. Not to be missed in my eyes.

Her voice is stunning! I'm trying to decide if I should plan a trip to New York just to see this show! That note at 1:25 gah! She sounds like a bird lol

+Minghao Xu I agree and I'm a huge Hamilton fan (and for me it was amazing and then some) but there's a lot of politics involved when it comes to awards in general, like the fact that Hamilton didn't even want to give any free tickets to Tony judges at first and that will probably affect their chances to win some Tonys, besides the fact that it looks to be a very good and competitive season of course.

Really, I couldn't even understand the lyrics. She's not trained properly in musical theatre.

She is all this and baked in a beautiful pie.. brilliant lyric.

She went a key higher than the original. Props!

Wow!!!! Didn't think anyone could nail it as good, if not better then Sarah. But dang girl, your emotions and those crazy pipes of yours. You just shook my soul. This is my song. And you blow me away!

Never heard this song before but loved the movie Waitress so I looked up the musical and found this. Within the first verse and chorus I was bawling. It speaks to my life right now and I needed to let that emotion out. Sara Bareilles, you are gifted from God with the ability to write and sing music, and Jessie Mueller, your voice is a treasure. What an amazing song...

This is master class material on how to pull your audience and have them hanging on your every syllable.

I am not really a big fan of Broadway, but I watched tony award. And I think her performance is the best, her voice is just wow

I recently saw Waitress and this musical is amazing and Jessie put on a spectacular and emotional performance. ( I only cried a lot) The entire cast was more than happy to come out the stage door to say hello, autograph, and take pictures. Keala even belted out Happy Birthday for someone and it was fabulous. I would so see this musical again and recommend it to anyone wanting to see a musical!

This is my absolute favorite rendition of this song. Out of all the versions. It's just perfect. She holds the notes where they need to be so sweetly held (unlike Katharine McPhee who does runs all over the place. She's extremely talented, but all the runs that she adds kind of takes away from the beauty of the song. In my opinion). And this is the only version with that great 'stronger' at 3:03. I come back to this video over and over just for that 'stronger'

Her acting is superb.

I cant stop myself from watching it over and over again. The emotion in her voice and acting is enchanting that it's hard for me to not buy a ticket to New York and watch it on Broadway...if it's still there.

Can Jessie Mueller just play Jenna forever? She is so perfect in the role! Such a stunning performance.

This choked me up. So heartfelt.

If you watch the original movie this song references the scene where Earl makes Jenna use her hidden money for the baby. Jenna is heartbroken and believes that she'll be trapped in her loveless marriage and worries that she's lost herself because of the abuse and lack of love Earl causes. I think Sara did a great job with this song because it really shows Jenna at her most vulnerable.

This song broke my heart....what a song! I love Sara...she is a perfect Artist!

My wife and I saw "Waitress" last night and it was amazing! I'm not a huge crier, but I can't listen to this song without crying. She put so much into that song last night! Even though I just saw it last night, I'm talking to my wife about driving back up from DC to see it again. Great show!

Honestly I'm quite pissed that Hamilton got all the attention. This show got basically nothing. I just saw it the other day and I cried my eyes out. I love this show more than Hamilton now if I'm being honest. It's just such a raw and beautiful show that relatable for a lot of people in many different. Don't be mad at me that's just my opinion. I just think that this show is so much more powerful. If Hamilton wasn't a thing this show would be basically impossible to see because of the demand to see it. Absolutely beautiful piece of art.

Logan Stommel Hamilton is a great show but Waitress (and the other shows) deserved to have some attention as well

I agree. They had the misfortune of opening up (heh! sorry, can't help it) the same season as Hamilton. It was also so disappointing and maddening that they didn't win the Grammy's. I'm pretty sure The Color Purple is good too, but Sara did such an awesome job creating the music and lyrics for Waitress and as a first-time Broadway composer-lyricist at that!

I'm floored. That was just insane, she is so gifted.

I also had the honor of seeing this wonderful show last week, and Jessie sang this with SO MUCH emotion and vocal power that I was blown away. A true STAR.

I went to ART where this was being performed before it went to Broadway and this moment was so powerful to see. I get things change again when they go to broadway but she was never weeks away from giving birth and didn't think it was needed when the this scene was changed.

No one on the face of the earth interprets this song better than her, not even sara bareilles herself..

Saw her perform on broadway and it was actually much better than in this video. It was the best thing I’ve ever seen in my life. I was crying off and on the entire time. The way that she portrays the emotion and depth in this is SO. MOVING.

I cried so hard when I first heard Sara's version, but five minutes ago I thought I had grown immune to this song. Clearly I thought wrong, as I am now lying in a puddle of tears.

Jessie has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard, and what an actress.

Wow! She IS that woman. I believe every word she sings.

This performance is so intense and beautiful and basically all that I want to be one day.

I've started watching this video daily because I just need it in my life

It's amazing how you can really visualize and feel how Jenna is feeling just by looking into her eyes.
