This song was written for an abused waitress reflecting on the life she lost. It's crazy how the lyrics can mean something completely different to every one. I connected so so deeply with the lyrics but in my own way. And I think that's just beautiful. Hats off to Sara Bareilles..beautifully written song.

No, it's not about a waitress. It's about a woman becoming a mother: The demands the child places on her makes her feel like her life has been reduced to waiting on the child.

This is the most technically perfect version of this song I’ve ever heard. It’s almost unsettling just how pitch perfect she is.

I can't get over how she maintains both control of her voice and full expression of her rage and sorrow, one of the most deeply raw musical performances I've ever seen.

This is the angriest version I have seen of this song. I love it. A woman who’s reflecting on her past and is mad at fate but forgiving herself for her mistakes. Hopeful for the future and above all determined that life will be different, she will be different from now on. At least that’s what I get from the song, but I’m not a woman so I may be tottally off base.

Just saw this video. As a recording producer and engineer, I sometimes tell singers that I will turn off the lights in the studio, so they can focus on the song. Alison, one of the most emotional, true and focused track I have ever heard. Yes, you have great pitch, yes you have a good range, but your injection of your feelings is what makes good performers.....great.

The pain in her face and voice makes it looks like she might cry any second.

You should have seen it live! It was dialed up even more and we were close enough to see the tears falling from her cheeks during her final performance. She got a standing ovation in the middle of the second act with this song! That's not typical Broadway etiquette unless the audience is blown away. She is a tremendous talent. The most impressive live performance I have ever seen in my life!

But what’s even more amazing is how many people also find themselves in these lyrics. This song has woven an invisible thread between millions of us who suffer our weaknesses in silence, feeling so totally alone, only to find out that we aren’t alone. I've been listening to several versions of this song by various artists. It's no contest, she is by far best. As the other viewer commented, I'd have to second. He control us unrivaled!!! Wow! Listen again, with headphones . Pay attention to the nuisances in her voice, and that GROWL. Oh wow!

Sara wrote an amazing song - and Allison’s performance is simply insane. Her diction, awareness, facial emotions, not to mention the vocal performance - is so amazing - it’s hard to put into words. If I compare this to Shoshana Bean, or Katherine McPhee - it’s not even in the same ballpark - and both are great.

When she sang "baked in a beautiful pie" ...I felt that.

I have never heard anger expressed so beautifully through singing like when she sang “when she’s bruised, and gets used” I’m speechless

this is the very first time I hear this song , and her performance just made me cry. She makes you feel all the emotions at the same time. Just wow.

Both the pianist and the singer were really telling this story with complete honesty and passion. The singer's technique, control, and emotions brought out the character. While the pianist was painting the scene with just as much passion and conviction. It was truly moving and perfect.

Gia Gambardella i saw it last night and the cast gives time for everyone to clap for a long time because she is stunning!

I just need to say this after watching 7 different renditions - that this is my favorite. Agree that it’s the “angriest”. But, I love it because it’s the most conversational, and empowered in an authentic way. The others have a tinge of theatrical glamour, inspirational push or soft sorrow, which are also all beautiful. As beautiful as her voice is, you could watch this with the audio off and still be incredibly moved. The intensity of her facial expressions are awe inspiring. Put the two together and … wow.

The part where the lyrics go "and be scared of the life that's inside her, growing stronger each day 'til it finally reminds her, to fight just a little, to bring back the fire in her eyes..." speaks to me on a different aspect. I'd like to think of one day where I'd be able to fight my internal demons and overcome them... This song --- and this rendition --- truly is a masterpiece..

I prefer Jenna’s who don’t add a lot of special things. When they do it clean, I feel like the emotions are conveyed better & it is way more raw.

she was an amazing jenna live. i saw shoshana who killed it but i felt the emotion more seeing alison

I love how she looks in the distance as if she is looking at her old self. And the sadness in her eyes... It's so beautiful, it's painful.

She felt every single word! It's fantastic what the music can make us feel...

Her vocals are so CLEAR, and she sings this with such an authentic emotional quality that is a bit more nuanced/subtle than other Jennas (though I've loved them, too). so good.

The emotions in her hands are legit. The tension is real, super in character.

Omg the voice, emotion.

Hands down the best version. Technically, emotionally. the control is outstanding.

Come on now. Sara Bareilles’s version absolutely rocks. Sara’s is not actually a version as it’s her song.

Firstly, that was probably my favourite rendition of this song ever! And secondly, I’ve heard this song a million and one times but I felt like I was listening to it brand new! So stunningly sung!

the raspyness at “learns how to toughen up” gave me chills ugh

I stand by what I said the first time I saw this video. This is unequivocally and simply the best live performance on KZread. Alison's rendition is as moving as it is flawless. I have run this video through the finest audio systems available and it takes on another diminution entirely. It stops anyone in the vicinity and they become transfixed, I have never seen anything like it.

If they had a top live performance for the first quarter of the century, anyone they put forward would have the fight of a hundred lifetimes to come anywhere near this. The emotional connection between Sarah & the incredible pianist being the absolute icing on the cake.

I relate to this song so much, my life story is unfortunately a lot like Jenna’s (minus the affair lol). I got to escape with my little one and create a great life for my kiddo, just like Jenna did. But god, when I hear this song, it brings me back to the days crying on the bathroom floor crying and holding my stomach promising my child we would get out. I’ve always connected with each individual during every performance of Waitress, given my similarities, but this woman LITERALLY connected to me so deeply I was weeping! THIS is why I love theatre. Such a brilliant, perfect performance and undoubtedly my favorite Jenna thus far.

One of the most brilliant live performances ive ever seen by a vocalist. The pianist is pure class as well with pacing that is perfect. These are masters at work.

This version destroyed me emotionally and I enjoyed it immensely.

That is one of the most beautiful performances I have ever heard/seen in my life. Absolutely breathtaking.

Ole' Green George I don’t see how a video that made you think of something you didn’t like deserves a dislike. Sounds like a you problem, and not the video’s. Also wow, the video/song is supposed to be emotional and indulgent, but it’s getting disliked for delivering what it’s supposed to...? While not being offensive or rude in anyway? People really give dislikes without much regard nowadays lol, I thought only videos that were actually bad were given dislikes..
