When I was studying voice I was trained to follow the accompanist on the piano. However I noticed that their timing was not together on this song. It really bothered me because she has an unbelievably beautiful voice. So I'm not sure who's supposed to follow who or if they're supposed to work together.
@markhall7646
4 жыл бұрын
@@joytotheworld2100 I can tell you how I approach this. I listen to my vocalist sing the song to his/her preferred accompaniment first- (whether it's a recorded accompaniment or live) and how they pace the song, where their breaths are and their phrasing. I set my accompaniment to their cues. So I think the accompanist should listen and follow the vocalist's lead. An example? Listen to the piano accompanist to Elisabeth Kulman for her performance of Erlking here on KZread. He follows her beautifully.

@ Weber is tremendously musical- his works demand great agility of voice and phrasing. By those two devices he conveys rich emotion and depth. Many have scoffed Weber's work, only to return to humbly give thanks to his genius. Say what you will, yours is merely opinion. Before you pass from this earth, you will have your epiphany of all things music, and indeed, of Weber.
@yingyangplays

I am studying vocal music ed and I’ve learned that the term “accompanist” is actually very disrespectful and outdated. It implies that the pianist is inferior to the soloist, when in reality the pianist works just as hard to produce music with the soloist. I’ve learned that the correct term for the pianist is “collaborator” or “collaborative pianist”. Yes it can be argued that it’s the pianist’s job to “follow” the singer, but to counterpoint, the singer also follows the pianist. For example, the pianist can actually lead the singer to sing softer or louder by the way they play. Singers often feel unsupported if the pianist’s playing is weak in tone, so the singer heavily relies on the pianist just as much as the pianist relies on the vocalist. There is a lot of compromise when it comes to any performance that involves more than one person and it is very much a “collaboration”. (:

I’m not a big fan. I like two or three songs. But I love memory. Not many big alto moments out there, so I have a soft spot for it. Sadly, when I saw the tour live, we had the understudy, and she did not quite have her bearings on this, so the biggest part of the show, the climax, was.... pretty wobbly. And I’m not going to go see it again. It’s a pity. I’d enjoy a tenth viewing Phantom or Lion King more than a second of Cats. 😂

i watched it, and she’s a great singer but idk i feel like first of all the whole cats thing (e.g. makeup, costumes, set, other actors on stage with grizabella) distracts me, which is why i could never get into this musical in the first place. also, personally i would take a great emotional voice over great non-vocal emotional acting any day, and i think keri rené fuller focuses more on vocal emotions than elaine page does - not to say elaine isn’t good, but i think, as someone coming after elaine, keri has to sort of reinvent the role / how the song is sung in order to not only live up to the original but also to distinguish her performance from the original, and i think that shows up in her particular emphasis of vocal emotion.
Saw her live in Boston this evening. She was absolute perfection. An absolute legend. The audience was stunned silent, and then the applause, and cheering was deafening.
You can see she has completely broken down this song and figured out how to pronounce and sing each individual beat and it is so beautiful. The work behind performing shines through her captivating, emotional voice and stage presence. Her face enchants me so I cannot look away!!!
I’ve watched this so many times now it’s starting to get unhealthy

We saw her yesterday in Dallas. She was beyond amazing. She had a packed theater in absolute floods of tears. Let me tell you, I saw the live Broadway in Chicago show of Cats and watching her sing this live was absolutely breathtaking. The room literally shook as she belted those high notes. Her role of Grizabella was extremely fitting and I would honestly not hesistate paying again to watch it a second time.
Memory, turn your face to the moonlight Let your memory lead you Open up, enter in If you find there the meaning of what happiness is Then a new life will begin Memory, All alone in the moonlight I can smile at the old days I was beautiful then I remember a time I knew what happiness was Let the memory live again Burnt out ends of smoky days The stale, cold smell of morning a street lamp dies, another night is over Another day is dawning... Daylight I must wait for the sunrise I must think of a new life And I musn't give in When the dawn comes, tonight will be a memory too And a new day Will begin (instrumental break) Sunlight through The trees in summer Endless mascarading Like a flower As the dawn is breaking The memory is fading Touch me It's so easy to leave me All alone with the memory Of my days in the sun If you touch me, you'll understand what happiness is Look, a new day Has begun
I swear she must've sold her soul ...
I can't believe I got to see her live and meet her afterwards. She's so kind, and hearing that voice in person is so breathtaking.
Can we talk about how clear her tone is when she says “will” at 2:24
Saw her perform this on stage in Toronto yesterday, and it was absolutely mind blowing. Some people were unable to contain themselves and started applauding mid-song. Still reeling from just how damn good it was.
I was actually more impressed by the power behind her low notes at 1:27 and 2:50 then the big finish... Also, that first bridge from 1:46 to 1:55 was just absolutely stunning. It feels like someone pouring ice water down my back when she gets to those big notes for the first time! Edit: I think I'm in love...
I don't really get the young Grizabella thing, but she's good

Same. She's brilliant. But...no.

They made Grizabella a cat who is younger now but has a facial issue. She has a big scar on her face. I saw Keri on the tour and she was the best by FAR! Her acting was amazing, and when this song finished, she got a standing ovation

@@riocolino1851 Oh I'm not saying it wouldn't work. And the singer (as many others) is amazing. I'm just saying for me, Griz should be worn and used. It's about a lifetime being shunned for things that are not as superficial as a facial scar. I mean, that just makes all the other jellicles assholes, no?

@@spacehootle309 I don't get it either. The whole point of the show is to pick the cat that is ready to move on to the next of their nine lives. Old Griz is that: worn out, tired from the hard life she lived and ready to move on. A young character wanting to move on to a new life just because of an imperfection, to me/IMO as someone disabled from birth, sends a really wrong message.
Just saw her in Detroit - It was worth $70 to hear her sing this live!!! Flawless
She is giving me Céline Dion vibes with her “optional” breathing just to appear human before us. She’s not doing a very good job tho. #Inhuman #MasterfulSinging #Wigless
I’ve seen Cats 3 times over the years and her version of Memory is the best I’ve ever heard. The theater was silent and so captured by her presence. Her standing ovation was well deserved!
