I just realized that Zoe basically expresses that she is not going to lie about Connor to make anyone feel better, not even herself. That is the total opposite of what Evan does.

I think it's a little bit more than that, too. I think Zoe is saying she's not going to lie about Connor, but she's also trying to convince herself that there WASN'T more to Connor. I think it's about trying to make herself feel better in her time of grieving. She's just lost her brother, but she didn't even particularly like her brother? So why should she grieve him? Except, of course you still grieve your brother. Because at the end of the day that's your family. So I think it's much more about Zoe trying to reason with herself that Connor was a bad person, so she shouldn't grieve and she shouldn't be upset, because she's afraid that he wasn't as evil as she thought he was. That he wasn't as mean as she thought he was. And the thought of that terrifies her.

wrong musical, their profile picture is from a new brain, but it was also written by William Finn (who wrote Falsettos and a few other productions like The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and The Royal Family Of Broadway) Sorry, I'm just a huge WIlliam Finn fan. She has more of a genuine, brighter voice of a teen, which embodies Zoe Murphy’s character better (Laura Dreyfuss was also good but like many films/shows/broadway cast, she is many years over her teens and is less appropriate to play Zoe. Don't get me wrong, she was amazing but Mallory has a total different perspective of Zoe) 🤗👏👏I LOVE ALL THE CAST MEMBERS

Really? I feel like Laura Dreyfuss sounds younger and more authentically Zoey. Perhaps it's just this particular performance, but Mallory Bechtel sounds very much like a professional singer, and also doesn't have that same emotional teenager sound that Dreyfuss had. When Dreyfuss sings it, you can hear her heart breaking. Like how I imagine Zoey would feel after Connor's death, when everyone is saying how great he was, and all she can remember are the bad memories and feelings; Becuz his behavior and problems stole what little light was left in the her parents' "spotlight" away from her, and also becuz her only companion in that broken family abandoned her, becoming a temperamental, violent jerk.

What I find particularly tantalising is that, knowing the rhyme scheme of the first verse, you can sense there was another part to the second verse that they still cut for this version. You can hear that it probably contained lyrics along the line of "couldn't save you" and "why should I be blamed?" or possibly "ashamed?".

Her vocals sound so effortless, yet are infused with such a perfect emotional arc. I really appreciate her subdued physical acting, as it makes the drama and crystal clarity of her voice that much more striking. Despite her youth, it's a very mature creative choice and a sign of an already seasoned performer. My university sometimes gets comp tickets to Broadway shows, so I've been holding out for Dear Even Hansen (yeah right!) but this broke student may have to just bite the bullet and shell out some dough. It'll be well worth it.

  • @rawr1131

For me what’s always made this song even more emotional is that it’s hard to confirm what their relationship was like. It was toxic obviously (on both ends). But we don’t know exactly what happened between. We have the story Zoe tells, and it’s understandable to see Connor as a villain from that. But we’re never shown or told if it was a pattern. And we’re never told or shown what led to it. He could have been angry, he also could have had some mental break and lashed out while disoriented. Connor could have done this regularly to her: abuse Or it could have genuinely been a misunderstanding: not necessarily abuse but still traumatizing. I think it’s great that survivors of abuse have this song but at the same time, I wonder if Zoe was angry about other things instead. Like how she lost a brother and would never have one again. It was a very complicated relationship and it could have been mended. Both sides seem to genuinely care for each other and that’s what really makes this song so emotional for me.

One of the things that really stood out to me about this play is how Zoe must have felt the entire time Evan was lying. She describes her brother as extremely violent and unloving, so when he dies she basically feels nothing, but in this song she basically decides that no matter what she won’t grieve him. I find it interesting. She must be going through some conflicting feelings already now that her brother is dead, but it must be even worse now that Evan has started lying about their relationship together, thinking, “why wasn’t he like this with me?”

Yep thats what the original second verse was but There was a second bit to the chorus originally but it's been cut completely, i remember some of it, it went something like 'And why should you get another chance to drag me through, one more round of tears you can't undo, oh I dont have an elegy to write, I can sing no requiem tonight' And then into the second verse that Mallory sang :-)

When you first started singing, I loved the gentle voice you had, thought it went really well with the song; but then when you went into your beautiful falsetto I just melted. And THEN you went and put a ton of bite into your singing, showing the versatility of your voice; never the less I was very impressed. In short, you sound amazing!

okay... i did SO not expect these new lyrics to be added. and when i heard them, my heart stopped for a second. i love these kinds of things when creators make a new version off a song and add new lyrics to it, just like they did with burn and first burn. it sheds a whole new light on the song, and also gives us more of an insight to how connor was in the family. obviously you hear it in the show, but not in the soundtrack, i always felt like it was kind of limited, wich was indeed the whole point of connor’s character but even in requiem, i felt like something was missing, and this just made it so much better. thank you for making this. best of luck to mallory, i hope she has a great time at dear evan hansen.

This girl is proof that amazing and angelic singing is also the product of hard work, training, and experience, not just talent. She's been training and doing musicals since the age of 4 and she's 18 here. If you watch her earlier videos of her singing, she didn't always have such a clear tone. She was always a good singer, but she didn't sing as clearly when she was younger.

I do hope you make it to Broadway though

I cry every time I hear and sing this song. It’s the first time I’ve found a song that voices completely how I feel. My dad was majorly abusive (physical and emotional) and I decided to leave and kick him out of my life. Everyone around me told me it was a mistake and I should try to rekindle things with him. They were all sad I made that decision but this song voices how I feel. Why should I lie about feelings that aren’t there? Why do I have to pretend to be heartbroken about it when I’m not? It makes me realize that it’s ok to feel this way. Thanks for reading this
