t's not simple to say That most days I don't recognize me That these shoes and this apron That place and its patrons Have taken more than I gave them It's not easy to know I'm not anything like I used be, although it's true I was never attention's sweet center I still remember that girl She's imperfect, but she tries She is good, but she lies She is hard on herself She is broken and won't ask for help She is messy, but she's kind She is lonely most of the time She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie She is gone, but she used to be mine It's not what I asked for Sometimes life just slips in through a back door And carves out a person and makes you believe it's all true And now I've got you And you're not what I asked for If I'm honest, I know I would give it all back For a chance to start over and rewrite an ending or two For the girl that I knew Who'll be reckless, just enough Who'll get hurt, but who learns how to toughen up When she's bruised and gets used by a man who can't love And then she'll get stuck And be scared of the life that's inside her Growing stronger each day 'til it finally reminds her To fight just a little, to bring back the fire in her eyes That's been gone, but used to be mine Used to be mine She is messy, but she's kind She is lonely most of the time She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie She is gone, but she used to be mine

@@hankmoody7974 I understand your point but I gotta say, whilst this covers a sensitive topic more in depth than hamilton had time to do (bc of the nature of the show), one being good doesnt negate the other. Hamilton also moved and ‘scared’ a lot of people, but ultimately I feel that the different styles and pace of the songs of both musicals are meant for audiences with different tastes. I like waitress for what it is, but the songs didnt move me as much as hamiltons did when i first heard them, because I just couldnt attach myself to the music as much. Its worth saying that regardless of musical preference, hamilton objectively covered ‘scary’ topics like death, betrayal, unrequited love and inadequacy. But imo even if it hadnt done any of these, you cant deny a catchy soundtrack and good story telling lol

The first time I heard this song I broke down in tears. Because I'm a 65 year old woman that has gone through hell and back and the hell and back again many times and yes somebody does come through the back door and carves out of person that makes you believe that this is you when someday you look back and oh my God you really do miss that person you used to be you realize she's gone and she's never coming back and you do look in the mirror and you don't recognize yourself, this is why I busted out in tears. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written about a woman I really do believe that every woman has experienced this song one way or the other but when you're old and gray and your children grown and they look at you and say I miss myMom. And the only thing you can say back is I miss her too. But life has carved out a lovely lady that is baked in a beautiful pie, when I smile at my family it says it all. So I thank you Sarah for writing such a gorgeous and truthful song. 🎶🎶😘 And by the way. I'm still here.!!!!!!😏

She is pregnant with a baby by her abusive husband and doesn't really want the baby, but up until right before this she's been squirreling away money hoping to save enough to enter a baking competition, win money, and become independent so she can give her baby a good life. The way she says pie at 3:08 breaks me. After building up this whole emotional breakdown throughout the song that peaks as she’s belting, it’s as if she’s realized that the person she was really is gone, and in a way she’s come to terms with the fact that she’s changed. All she can do now is cry because the person she used to be is never coming back.

I'm 25 years old now, second born. For some reason, I'm seeing my mother in this song when she was 19 and pregnant with my brother (her first child) She never felt loved all her childhood, her parents were physically, mentally and emotionally unavailable. They forced her to work as a maid to provide instead of studying at a very young age, 9 yrs old. Her parents represent the lyrics "a man who can't love" I felt my mother's raw emotion from Jessie's voice, her loneliness, inner wish to rewrite her dreams, her deep pain, the cuts she'll never forget, fear for the child inside her while getting a single hope to "fight a little", and recognizing back her identity as someone who once had a fire for a beautiful future. I cried from the heart of my mom, especially for giving us the love she never received. I respect her, that's I always try my best to make her realized that we are proud of her. She is perfect to me, She's now loved and well taken care of. We are happy that we get a chance to love her back. This song is her story, in a way. This song gives HOPE and POWER to everyone out there. So THANK YOU. 🥺❤
