Mine has 250,000 miles and I can't believe how 'brand new' the engine sounds at idle...For my work, I drive a lot of Modern Cars and everytime I drive something like GM/Vauxhall, even with low mileage, the drivetrain always sounds BAD, like something is going to break. I personally think Volvo engines from that era are some of THE longest lasting you can buy in any car, easily on par with Honda/Toyota

@@bartp7969 ill explain torque steer, open differentials will always spin the wheel with least grip, so when you floor it only one of the 2 wheels will break traction. Torque steer happens on front wheel drive cars with open differentials where one of the wheels will start spinning faster than the other wheel, causing the car to steer on its own, and when you try to correct it with steering, it usually just starts spinning the other wheel when the weight shifts to the other side, and the same thing happens again. You can see torque steer happening in the video where he floors it in a low gear and the car goes side to side. You cant really get rid of it fully unless you weld/lock the diff completely which absolutely RUINS all drivability and is rarely done on fwd.

850 and the first V70, which is similar. I am going to drive these until they outlaw gasoline cars, absolutely love them! They easy to work on, parts are cheap and they very well designed and reliable. Fun fact, back in 1994 I took my driving exam in a brand new 850 and I was hooked ever since, had to wait many years until I could afford one tho... Great video thx guy's.

I had a 98' t5 S70 as my first volvo. Made around 370 and it was so cool. Didnt have that much lag, I feel like when you get into the 400 range with volvo's its fun but not responsive enough. Very cool car however. (current volvo: 04 S60R M66 stock)

My buddy got given my dad's '98 v70r awd, he swapped the 2 liter engine for a 2.4, did the ethanol conversion and now she pulls super hard. His next project for it is to add an intercooler and a new air filter, as well as change the wheels. Would be cool to see it dyno'd one day.

What an absolute monster. I had a poster of an 850r alongside a Ford Sierra rs500 on my bedroom walls as a kid. Always had a soft spot for these Swedish beasts and this one makes me smile.

I can that Bilsport magazine featured an article about an engineer called Milan Kniesevitch that built a seqential turbo setup on the 850R engine that prodused a turbine smooth 600 bhp engine it would pull from 1200rpm to how ever high you dared to rev it. It was a real marvel. However. Volvo never. Put it to mass production. A real shame...

Some years ago I owned a 740 GLT (My first car) not as crazy as this but still an amazing car with this special retro feeling. And the best of it all was, that it was rear wheel drive. Had a blast drifting around every winter here in Sweden. Man I miss those days... Right now I'm driving a boring Fiat. I almost cried when I sold my 740. It will always have a special place in my hearth...

What a lovely looking car. Loved them back in the day and they look even better today. Especially in estate form. That pivotal point in Volvo history where they were still boxy but started getting a bit more smooth. I think the subsequent era of Volvo cars got a bit too curvy, but some still looked great.
