Volvo 244 | Tune-Up

Фильм және анимация

I test the Volvo on the Sun tester.
I have a feeling that the timing is off due to high fuel consumption and lack of torque

Timing does drift on older cars. Im an ex Saab Master Tech, and i used to see timing drift 1 to 2 degrees per year on old 900 and 9000 models. This was due to the timing chain wear which then puts the distributor out. So i used to quickly reset them at every full service. Even now i will occasionally get an old 900 brought to me and the timing will be a good 8 to 10 degrees out.

Lovely old bus. As a child I spent a lot of time in my Mum's 1983 240DL. It was a powder blue colour, perhaps the same as this car but I don't think I could tell on film. I loved that car, with the overdrive gearbox and massive red clicky lights to tell you to put your seatbelt on. Perhaps one day I think of a reason or find an opportunity for a Volvo too...

It will take a little time to settle. It will have been fouling the cylinders with wacky timing. Though at -20 btdc, it was basically tuned for top speed.

I heard you make comment about points gap. One think we used to have on the VW’s I worked on is distributor bushings would wear which would cause dwell issues. I’m sure your Sun machine shows ignition spark burn times, KV voltage and a raster screen showing all 4 cylinders. With that screen you can see dwell variations between cylinders which would mean the distributor needs overhauled.

Don't forget that the data plate on the car was for use when new and doesn't allow for the use of unleaded petrol which will require the engine to be adjusted to compensate, also if the gas analysis is anywhere near correct then I would reconsider the adjustment as it's running lean I'd like to see it at 3% on hot idle and you Need to check that it leans off when it's under load,as the carb is notorious for wearing its needles and jets,it's worth considering the state of the rubber diaphragm also. Good luck with it ,you will have it running sweetly I'm certain.

Yes thats right, SU and Zenith type carbs would wear the needle on one side. Meaning more fuel going in. Getting rebuild kits could be tricky now though.

I don't know if this engine has a visco coupling for the fan but on other redblock Volvo's (360/240/740/940) they sometimes fail and then the fan is driven 100% all of the time and that takes power so that would raise fuel consumption. Nice 244!

I’m the owner of this magnificent car, and yes it’s a cool combo of lights and grill. I purchased the car at the verge of the crusher. It had had a front end collision, so I had to find the lights and grill, which wasn’t that easy. As far as I know, it’s at 2 year only production run from 1979 to 1980. 😊 I was lucky and found brand new old stock lights at a parts breaker in the other end of the country… luckily Denmark is a small country. Great videos you make on your exceptional Volvo finds! I would like to swap my car for your, 242 turbo!😃

Even without calibration the peak CO2 method can be used for adjustment. It does also look like the readings are accurate enough to use, better than not adjusting. In your first test there was excessive HC (unburnt fuel) which was fixed when you retested due to the timing.

If its on the Stromberg its worth checking the dashpot is correctly oiled, I heard some whiffling and hunting going on there which is either the vacuum system has a leak to atmosphere or the oil in the dashpot depleted or too thin an oil allowing the dashpot to hunt up and down from the drawpast of the intake. BTW where did you get that jumper from, I love the British military jumpers but never seen one with a high collar and sleeve pockets like that, just been searching the internet but no hits lol

How is that MCS 2000 still actually running after all this time? We bought a new one at a garage I worked for in the 80's, it was an utter piece of shit from day one and after 2 years it was left abandoned due to being too annoying.

@@SeasideGarage maybe! I was taught by an old mechanic to adjust the ignition timing by driving up a steep hill at full throttle or pulling the handbrake while driving on a flat road and applying full throttle. Advance the timing until it starts pinging under full load, and then back it off a few degrees :)

After the timing was adjusted it looked like the sun machine said CO2 was at 14%!?! If so that would point to a very rich mixture setting on the carb and that would also contribute to poor fuel economy. In the UK a vehicle of this ages needs to be under 4.5% CO2 to pass its inspection

  • @SeasideGarage
