Spark plug replacement: 15 to 30 minutes ($20 / $95 / $180)
In this video I show how I replace the spark plugs on a 1990 Volvo 740 GL wagon. I'm sure the process is the same for the other red block Volvo's like the 240, 940, and many other vehicles that do not have coils over the plugs.

    Good Morning Robert. You have given me straight forward advice in the past about my 1996 960. I had an issue yesterday that I wanted to ask you about. I drove the car about two miles from home to the store. In the parking lot the engine started shaking, and I noticed the check engine light. I checked the oil it seemed low, so I topped it off with one quart. The oil level was not the issue. In driving the car back home the engine light flashed, and the car smoothed out at higher speeds. I took it easy though. What I've found so far is the car is most likely having a misfire, and this could lead to catalytic damage. I only drove the car 4 miles in all. I have 150k on the car, and bought it 3 years ago with 118k. My questions would be.What is the least case, plugs, MAF, coil pack scenario? The car has some rather strong vibration, I've read the flashing means a misfire for sure in this car. What is the worst case scenario? Meaning I paid 3K for this car and cannot put too much into this. If I can pull the codes and find the cylinder, can that plug be the cause alone. I'm in a bad spot. My mechanic lives roughly 2 miles away, and I don't have towing. I don't want to mess up the catalytic convertor, and I think I'm okay since I did not drive it too far in this condition. This all came on at once, and I have never changed the plugs on this car since my ownership. Is driving this a few block okay? I would appreciate your take, since you have extensive knowledge of these cars.Thank you ahead of time Robert, I'm trying to fix this tomorrow. So I don't know if you are available on Sunday's.JB

  • @RobertDIY

    @RobertDIY

    +John Boswell Hey John, the most common issue is a bad coil at that age and mileage. Next is the wires going into the coil, and them a burnt valve. You can figure out what cylinder is misfiring by starting the car and pulling the coil plugs one at a time. When you unplug one and the engine does not change it's pitch, you have found the offender. So you can swap the coils around, say that #2 is misfiring, swap #2 and #5 to see if the misfire follows. If so, you need a coil, if not the issue is stuck at the #2 position. Push the wires in the back on the plug in, change or swap the spark plug, check compression, and if you don't find the problem by then, swap the fuel injector. - kzread.info/dash/bejne/hZtry6iypNvMqrQ.html

    +Robert DIY , Robert, thank you so much for the instructions. I don't have the star tool to get to the plugs, so I expect to have a mechanic do this work. I wonder if you had any plugs in mind, or if I should just replace them all to rule out the plugs. I may go about this job myself, but I cannot check compression. Do you think it's safe to drive a couple miles to get the codes read, and avoid towing? I have read the codes can tell me the actual location of misfire? I'm hoping this is not the injectors, as that begins to get costly. Again, thank you so much for this advice, and your quick response. You are doing many people a great service with your KZread video's.

    Robert, I pulled a PO-306 code from the car. Do you think its safe to drive a few blocks? It listed off a bunch of symptoms, monitors, 6 ich, catalyst, evap, sec air, 02 sensor, 02 htr, EGR, and the last was misfire. I assume It's going to be a spark plug or coil issue at number 6. Hoping it doesn't turn out like the video you linked. Thank you again, I'm just not sure at this point if I can get away with driving the car to my mechanics. John

  • @RobertDIY

    @RobertDIY

    8 жыл бұрын

    John, people drive thousands of miles with misfires. Not a big deal. If #6 is misfiring you can unplug the injector to that cylinder and drive 8 years. Please do me a favor, when I take the time to respond, please don't message me back with "I can't do this" and "I'm afraid to do that". It really doesn't help you. The other video I linked showed how to check that out in detail. I also typed out in detail what the common problems would be. If you're not comfortable in checking it out, tow or drive it somewhere and have your wallet ready.

    +Robert DIY Robert, I didn't see in your video or posting any mention of not driving. I did however see that you can destroy the catalytic converter. I was only concerned about making my situation worse. Regardless it was the number 6 coil pack, and I did pull the fuel for that cylinder to drive to my mechanics. It was $130 fix, since I have no tools. I was not trying to offend you in any way, just wasn't sure about driving the vehicle further. Totally unaware of being able to drive 8k on a misfire as well. Thank you for your video's

    In the old days a tuneup was basic timing/cleaning/air filter and mixture optimising, but modern engine management does all that now, no fun lol. Those plugs are eather the wrong heat range or the computer is getting the mixture too rich, the other types you tryed that didnt give you very good economy were possibly the wrong heat range as well. I had a frend with a fourstroke motorbike, it ran ok but it would just choke up and die by the roadside, i took a look at the plugs and they were black as a blackboard, it looked really over rich, he bought some new plugs of the supposedly correct range and after a week it died the same. i made the mixture weaker to test my thoughts, but the power was low and i came to the conclusion the plugs were the wrong heat grade, i said ignore the reccomended types and get a hotter rating or two. It ran perfect :-), the plugs were mid brown and stayed clean, it ran so much better than it ever did, i dont trust suppliers to deliver accurate heat rated plugs lol.

    Hi! Robert, I have bought a 1993 240. I paid 600 bucks for it, and knew I would need to replace several things, and spend some money on it. The first thing I did was change the oil. While it was up, the mechanic said it had leaks from transmission at the pan, an oil leak (not sure where) and power steering. The loss of power seemed like a plug issue, and after watching this video, I am getting Volvo plugs/wires done next. I have watched this video, and know what to do with the plugs, next... The temperature gauge goes just up to the red line when driving and it scares the heck outta me! I noticed, oddly, the temp goes down to halfway after it changes gears. What could this mean? I realize I might have some transmission problems, but I need to drive the car to work if possible. I feel like this car can get around town ok, but not in high traffic, since it has that weird idle. (again, am getting the plugs done to help with this). And doesn't seem to do well on the interstate due to having to keep the speed up. If this car can gain momentum on a level street, not forced uphill, it can sustain a 70mph speed. I cannot affort to spend 1000 dollars on a tranny fix. I did that on my honda, it was a bust, and thats why I have this car. I need motor mounts. The engine shakes the whole car. How hard is this to do? I got this car originally to drive and fix due to it's solid body. My kid was hit while on his motorcycle, and had to have open heart from the injuries. I would ideally like to protect him with this car until he can buy himself something nicer, but I also want to make sure I do my part and get it as reliable as possible. Thank you so much, 'Andrea P.s. I am new to repair, so please list any tools I might need.

    +Andrea Allen-lee Hi Andrea, it is hard for me to tell what is wrong with the car with what you have written. It probably has several issues, probably mostly minor. If the car shakes while it is running, it likely has a misfire. If it overheats, it probably has a blown head gasket. Maybe you should find a shop that works on these old Volvo's and have it looked at and have them give you a good list of problems to work from.

Second issue is low pressure light lights up when car is idling below 1000. Any thoughts appreciated. Hi Robert. Good and bad news here. Sorry for length.. First the good- had the low pressure issue fixed before the trip, one of the seals had become displaced near the oil pick up tube; after replacing (both seals) the low pressure light issue was no more. For the Bad news- after making the drive from Chicago to Arizona smoothly, my AC did not blow cold upon arriving. I brought it to a shop where they showed me a cracked condenser. Ok, so that was fixed. BUT upon attempting to drive my car away it will not move from park>> mechanic says "oh you just need to hit the overdrive switch.. "This, of course upset me right away as there had been no prior issue and I just had my shifter bushings replaced by a very trusted Volvo shop.. Any idea what could have caused this? Very much appreciate your help and insight

  • @RobertDIY

    Maybe it has a bad ignition switch. If you turn the switch back a little, will it shift then? Also, you may want to check your brake pedal switch. There is a solenoid at the shifter that will click when you push the brake pedal. If it doesn't release, you will have to release it with the override button. The last option is if the ignition lock cable is bad, it will stop it from coming out of park.

    Tip>>> if they plugs have a lot of carbon build up and you don't have a special spark plug cleaner and/or you don't have the $40 -60 to change out the plugs out at the time take a propane torch (like you would use to in putting copper pipe together) and use a vice or vice grips on the other end of the plug (where the boot goes) and apply heat to the gap side till all the carbon buns off ...take a just a few mins 2-3 and it will glow red hot the carbon will burn off and yes the plug is built to take that much heat but directed the carbon burns right off...AKA clean firing plug when it cools down... kzread.info/dash/bejne/nKCbvLGrd5i5ic4.html
