Porsche 924 | I Was Just Going To Change The Clutch

Фильм және анимация

New bearing shells are going in the 2.0 Porsche engine.
I know this is not a "prober job" the right thing would be a total strip and clean... but this is my way! :)

Hi, we’ve been off this week and the weather has been foul. So, we’ve been watching your videos. Thank you for making them, they are brilliant. Your enthusiasm for cars is just wonderful. Your luck with some of them (the A112) would break most people, but you just keep going. You’re a KZread treasure.

Embrace the snowball and pull the pistons, give cylinders a quick hone. Then discover that the valves dont seal too good. Disassemble the head and lap the valves. 🤔 May as well replace the valves since the exhaust valves have some pitting. And camshaft shows some signs of wear. And so on

Obviously you've little experience with 40+ year old engines that are going to be put into daily use! Just imagine taking an engine out replacing the shells and not removing the head at a minimum even just to inspect the pistons and rings. Regardless of the limited timeframe it does not make sense. Having said that, I do want to see the project turn out as a success naturally and I'm looking forward to future vids and hope there's no unnecessary pain in the process.

@@johnmcdonnell81 it's very tricky to find the balance with these old cars. As you start digging in deeper, time and cost goes up exponentially. I have a few project cars and I'm failing to bring them back on the road because I'm trying to do things "right".

@@tiitsaul9036 Couldn't agree more, it is tricky that's why it's worthwhile spending more time to complete a full inspection/strip down. Actually, did exactly this on an old Merc, so know what you're taking about. But hell I wasn't pulling out the engine to just replace the clutch and a couple of oil seals or whatever and not removing the head and sump after all, all the work from an engine happens in the combustion process, ie the cylinder head. As it transpired the bottom end was good and the bores too but valve seals, valve seats and ports all needed attention but no surprise due to age and mileage. it would be similar on nearly all older cars unless one gets really lucky. So, for the cost of a head set, valve seals and some labour time (hate lapping valves!), a day to remove the head lap the valves, fit new valve seals and refit the head and even easier with the engine out. My engine is fit for many miles to come, also I've now confidence/peace of mind in using the car and intend to do another 4000 miles over the summer. Anyway, I think I've made a fair and balanced point no matter what other people think.

It was done proper, when they change the bearings on the cars that need it as a part of regular maintenance they do it the same, sometimes even without removing the crank. I think they slide the new ones in?

Again, i have to say, its pain, when you doing something else, you notice something, and you try to ignore it, but you saw it, if you dont do something abaut it, it eats you alive, and sooon you are ordering parts. Happened to me couple days ago, i checked my wifes bmw that it had oil, coolant etc, and i noticed alternator belt.. oh no, that idler pulley.. and soon it snowballed and i had 400e worth of parts in my shopping cart 😂 But my own daily driver, i try not to do the same, and overlook lots of things, and that rusty crap has serviced me happily 2,5years and 35.000km with low effort and low budjet

At this stage I'd have to pull the head off and clean up.the valves, pull the pistons out, hone the bores and fit new piston rings. Do it once, do it right. Anyway, watching with interest and hope all goes well.
