Voigtlander 28mm f/2.8 Aspherical SL II-S Color-Skopar LENS REVIEW for Nikon F Mount, Digital & Film

Ғылым және технология

As we may have mentioned once or twice, we like Voigtlander lenses (and we stock them too!).
While we're waiting for some of the new Z glass to come out, we've been trying out each of Voigtlander's Nikon F mount lenses to see how they fare when pitted against some of the Nikon equivalents, starting with the 28mm f/2.8.

FINALLY a proper review of this lens :) Was searching for it for ages... So, thank yo! Absolutely love my 40mm Voigtländer and this 28mm always intrigued me but the reviews and images you can find online suggested to me that this lens is not quite es good as the 40mm. But now seeing you guys getting excellent results it looks like it is! You two have great chemistry. The presentation felt very natural. Good job & thanks again! :)

Nice, thanks! Both lenses are lovely. There is still something special about the old AIS lenses but I love the “green box” (Z cameras) conformation when the Voightlander gets with perfect focus and I’m happy to use the camera for aperture control.

I love the Nikkor Z 28mm F/2.8. Great for the outdoors and inside the studio. I own three of them including the Z 40mm F/2. Use them both on FX and DX Z cameras. Cheers!

More Nikon versus Voigtlander lens comparisons, please. Suggest the Nikon 58mm f/1.2 AIS versus Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SLII-S (both F-Mount).

It's a Voigtländer, with a German or Swedish ä. Pronounced Foigtlaender. Single V in German is pronounced F, like Volkswagen. 😃 PS. Love your tests. DS.

Smart choice of topics. I don’t see the need for anything between 20 and 35 even though I own many 24’s and 28’s. I do like the pre-AI scalloped/Leica style focusing rings. My 20mm f1.8 is attached to my cameras the majority of the time.

Nice review! I've got the Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AI-S recently, since it's a fantastic lens for its price. 28mm is my wide-angle focal length of choice, so I use it both on film (with my FM3A) and on my D850 - the latter as a wide-angle stop-gap option until I've saved enough to get the Nikkor 28mm f/1.4E. I use it also for shooting my video university lectures. I haven't processed any roll of film shot with it yet to see the results, but I really like how it works with the D850. Incredibly low distortion and very little CA wide open for a 28mm, even at its 20cm closest range, and a really lovely rendition. However, I really go for a vintage look when pairing it with the D850 - it's very sharp for a lens designed in the 80's, but the D850 clearly manages to outresolve it. In that regard, the Voigtländer is probably a better choice.

I don't think so, because they failed to test it properly. The Voigtlander is very soft in the corner, much more than the Nikkor, and just a bit sharper in the center. Plus the focus throw difference. So the Voigtlander is fine for close-up, but neither for landscape nor street, in my opinion (I own both and now selling the Voigt).

My Nikkor 28mm f2.8 AIS dates to about 2007. I love the thing of all 14 of my 28mm lenses. Even have the Sigma Monster 28mm f1.4 ART and the Nikkor 28 AIS is my go to. It focuses so close and is so small.

Thank you so much for a review! Sadly can't find Nikon 28mm ai-s anywhere in my region and the Voigtlander with $700 is way beyond my budget (it's $510 in my region now but still, can't afford it)

The Voigtlander 28mm 2.8 SL-IIs, 58mm 1.4 SL-IIs and APO 90mm 2.8 SL-IIs seems a pretty solid F-mount lineup. Would recommend the Macro APO Lanthar 125mm 2.5 SL but it’s an AI-S lens only and long discontinued. TBH, the design of the 28mm Voigtlander is a bit tacky compared to the Nikon version. That lineup to compete with the Nikkor 28mm 2.8 AI-S, 50mm 1.2 AI-S and 105mm 1.8 AI-S original lineup. Another option could be the Zeiss classic ZF.2 lineup: Distagon 2/25, Planar 1.4/50, Makro Planar 2/100 or APO Sonnar 2/135. (I have this line up)

Voigtländer made a 20mm F3.5 Skopar that was just as compact as their 28/40/90. For B&W, I use only primes, & 20/40/58/90 cover a lot of range.

Thank you for this, been looking for reviews and thoughts on the Voigtlander 28mm f2.8. How's the distortion on it though? Considering it for casual architecture photography, being very flexible as it is.

The shots from about 3:28 are uncorrected for distortion - so it's pretty good! Obviously the closer you get to the subject the more distortion there is but no optical corrections are done to the images :)

So the Voigtlander is fine for close-up, but neither for landscape nor street, in my opinion (I own both and now selling the Voigt). Also, a common issue with Voigtlanders is focus shift, so this is something to be aware if you plan to use it on DLSR. For a crop sensor, the Voigt would be better of course, as you eliminate its main weakness.

Finally a solid comparison. Ken Rockwell raves about the Nikkor AI-S. I wish the video review discussed actual optical performance but not as much as I’d hoped for. So thank you for this as it answered the questions I had. I’ll stick with the Nikkor as it still seems to outperform the Voigtlander 28.
