People say "Oooooh, that 40mm Voigtlander is a $450 new lens, thats pricey for such a tiny little lens !" .....Then I say "Have you handled or shot with one?...Its better made than many $10,000 Leica lenses I used to play with, its actually very UNDERpriced"

james mason youll be shocked. :) its made better and far more precise than ANYTHING Nikon ever (and i mean ever) made. its actually smoother and better built than some of the many $10,000 Leica lenses i used to mess with back at Beach Photo. if you want to see a TON of test pics from countless people, see here: www.flickr.com/groups/cv40/pool/with/20474025851/

Just asking as I will be renting one out this weekend. Yes photoshop can correct perspective but you have to shoot wider and I like the get it in camera concept. I guess I Will have more of a idea after this weekend. Would like a video on it from you anyway if you haven't already.

I agree completely with your review. I have this lens and also the 28mm. The sharpness and color is fantastic. These are great for walking around because of the small size. Manual focus is a lot easier than I expected. Really no problem if your shooting at f5.6 or 8.0. I picked up the 28mm on Ebay for $238 and the 40mm was $239.

Recently they came out with a new version that meters with non-ai cameras but I could for my life not find out if it has the same optical design (it focuses closer) and I have not tested it.

You should review the samyang 35mm f1.4 some time. It's a bit bigger but when I first tried it and saw the images I was blown away. Maybe not as precise as that lens is, but it's really better than you would expect. :)

Excellent review. I love the 40mm focal length. I first got acquainted with it with a Leica Minilux p/s. The images were always fantastic and I loved the 40mm for portraits. I have eyed this lens over the years. I am sure no one who gets it will be sorry. I should get it, too lol.

Ken, thanks for all of your awesome videos. Going to buy this to spice up my D3 but I also just bought the Xpro2 Fuji and am psyched to lighten my load and take advantage of the quality of much of their glass. I've never worked with adapters but, just checking, if I bought this with a Nikon Mount would it require a Nikon adapter to fit on the XPro 2? Stupid question I know. Some people talk shit about the metabones adapters. Is that the best one to use with Fuji X? I'd love to see a show on all the Zeiss lenses compared so I don't ever buy a bad one, you could have a stack on each side of the table and refer to them as shitz & titz.

+Thomas Smith yes, a metabones Nikon F to Fuji X mount :) $100 if Zeiss made an adapter, it wouldnt be 1% better than the metabones is, its pure perfection in quality and mfg, its chrome plated brass. well the Rayqual is much lighter, but costs almost 2X as much cameraquest.com :) what Fuji lenses U have? :)

Hey Ken, I'm looking into perhaps getting a 24mm lens for landscape photography, chucking the camera in my backpack while riding my motorcycle and taking photos of the scenery in Victoria, Australia! Is there any 24mm (or other focal length that could work better) you can recommend, nikkor or another brand? I have a D7100 :) Thanks!

G.G. Powell actually the 20mm VL is great, it just has a lot of vignetting between 3.5 and F8 (rather i should say a good bit too much). its an exquisite lens, however its also $500 new AAAACK :P

Theoria Apophasis Thanks Ken, It's available for roughly the same as the Nikkor 20mm F2.8 so I might go for the VL or just stick with the 12-24mm F4. I thought the 20mm VL and a 50mm Series E would be a nice small travel set with no bag needed.

Yah, i know the nikon grips are OVERpriced, but everything else has issues galore and can damage your camera. ;)
