I'm glad that you included the 200-500 F/5.6 zoom lens. It is a fabulous lens for nature, wildlife - and even long compressed landscapes! The VR is crazy good on this thing. The one drawback is that it is not the quickest focusing AF but I've got plenty of sharp BIF (Birds In Flight) images to prove it is up to the task. For the enthusiast photographer like me, being able to afford a terrific Nikkor long zoom for only $1,400 is simply amazing. Worth every penny.

Very nice collection! I also have a ton of lenses, but just started getting into older Nikon film bodies. I have a N65 and F100 that are compatible with my newer AF-S lenses. But I have been enjoying a recent purchase of the 24-85 f/2.8-4 AF-D. Although not a fixed aperture, it has worked very well in the bright summer light. Just sent the film out to see how they turned out, but my digital tests have been great. Glad you showed some of the lenses that I am not familiar with. Kicked my GAS into high gear, LOL!

Nice collection!! I can 100% attest to the 50mm 1.2 being a bit underwhelming wide open, and the 24mm 2.8 being an awesome lens. I have a Sony full frame but I've been using adaptors to try out different lens brands, and the Nikkor's I've tried got me a little hooked with their ability to capture contrast & saturation beautifully (my small collection includes the Nikkor 50mm 1.4G AF-S and the Nikkor 85 1.4 Ai-s). The only problem is I've been wanting to try more haha. As I'm dabbling with different brands, I'm realizing the beauty of lenses is not just about sharpness, it's also about character. Some lenses render super sharp images but can be flat and boring, while some are not so sharp but there's a certain magic and dimensionality to the images they produce, or some x-factor. Thanks and keep cool out there!

Amazing and informative video my friend. I also created my own little vintage Prime Nikon kit. I orginally wanted a 24-70 f2.8 for old blue my Canon 6D to keep at our old family farm house in the country. I found the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 was to hight in price to justify the cost in the used market here in Canada. I wanted a 24-70 or 24 -105 fast set up. I do alot of Nightscape . I then found some KZreadrs that reveiw the old Nikon Ai lens from the 1970's and 1980's . I made up my own fast primes , 28mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4 and 105mm F2.5 bought from Ebay from Japan. The total cost with shipping was $497 Can = $380 US. Plus the $11 dollar adapter for each lens from Amazon and I'm good to go. I love the EQ and the colour contrast of these lens, makes it a joy to use . Plus the Japanese people really take care of there gear. Your video really helps me and informs me of how many other great Old Nikon lenses are out there. Your videos inform us all that you can get great glass at a great price. When I first got into Photography I bought my first 3 lenses for $3000 dollars (Canon L & Sigma bla bla bla) now the fast 3 lenses ( Vintage Nikon) cost me $500. Now that's progress. That's again, regards Sean

Thanks for the very interesting video. For serious landscape and architecture the AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8 is a great choice and it became pretty cheap since Nikon released the 16-35mm f/4 VR. For macro the AF 70-180mm f/4.5-5.6D is an interesting alternative. Zooming in and out is much better with its zoom ring rather than re-positioning yourself or your tripod. I had good luck and could buy an AF-S 300mm f/2.8 for under 1.000 GBP, which is amazing and a good combo with the AF teleconverters.

You certainly can focus a 500mm lens manually. Professional and amateur photographers have been doing that for decades. In fact every modern photographer should get an old lens to learn the art with in my opinion. That effort pays dividends.

Good tip on the 85 f/1.8 afd lens. I've heard that they are the sharpest 85 Nikon has ever made. I have the 85 1.4 afd lens and love it. Sharpness is not everything! It renders beautifully and the bokeh is creamy and soft. Some of my favorite photos were taken with the 135 f/2 DC lens. The compression and rendering is gorgeous. The first time I used a 180 f/2.8 lens I thought something was wrong with it. Turns out it was so sharp that I was seeing things on the race track that I had never seen before! The 200 f/4 macro is a phenomenal lens but the bokeh can be really busy looking. To the point where it can be distracting from the subject. I really expected Nikon to come up with an afs version of it. They did with the 60 and the 105. I had one stolen years ago and the price of a new on has kept me from buying a new one. It seems like Nikon always makes great 300mm lenses. The afs lens is also a keeper. A little faster to focus than the version you have and will work with just about all of Nikons newer camera bodies since it doesn't need a body with a screw drive. You have a very nice collection there!

Mate you are 1000% right about the AMAZING Nikon 180mm f/2.8 AF D . I have a few Nikon top primes including the legendary 300mm f-2.8 VR2 which is another incredible fantastic lens. But as I tent to shake a bit when taking photos at ( not much but enough to make it not perfect photo) unless using a tripod I was forced to keep my 180mm in the drawer. Then the Nikon Zf came out and I bought it for one main reason which is to have my 180mm glued to my camera most of the time. As I live portraits every time I take a. Photo with it and see the results I say: Bloody Hell! I’ve found myself kissing this lens at times as soon I take a photo and check the image on the camera!😂

I have trouble focusing the 135 ais so let it go. No doubt a user issue. I do better with the 180, for whatever reason. You should also consider AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR which can be found for £400-500. I was lucky finding one in mint condition for £350. As for for compatibility, the lens forks were used only on non Ai '62-77 Photomic finder/meters as an option on F/F2. This fork is or will not clear all modern 90's on camera bodies. Is for sure fits & meters on F4, 5, 6, D2 3, 4. G lenses will meter index on F4, 5 in S & P mode, F5 F6 & D1 to new w/ aperture wheel. My F2AS, F4E D4S can pretty much share little of everything w/ some limits forward /backsword. F4 can take Non Ai lens natively, F5 can be adapted. The F5 is in my opinion the last of the best of film. F6 is brilliant but we lost the component finder option. This feature never made it the the pro DSLR. But we got i-TTL

Is it the grips that get in the way of the F-4s/e not being able to use the 80mm f/2.8 lens. I owned an F-4 and far as I know the only difference in the various models was the battery grips. I've heard that lens is very sharp but the build, like the 55 2.8 AF lens, is a turn off! Nikon built some weird stuff in their transition to auto focus. Some of the thin plastic focus rings were abominations! I'm curious why you think the 135 f/3.5 is a better lens than the f/2.8 version, which is universally accepted as a very good lens.I've own both and love the 2.8........

I always found the 50 not so "nifty" (a bit tight for most things, but not tight enough to get way in either) so rarely shoot 50mm. I think 60mm would aggravate me even more lol, so I'm sure it takes great photos, it's just something that one needs a very specific use for, or it would be a dust collector.

Lovely collection, congrats! I limited only to 24, 35, 50, 85 and 180 to use between the Df and Fm3a. I was just about to send the 180 afd to service due to the clinking noise when focusing on manual. I just saw your copy does the same noise, although not as loud as mine. Should I presume the noise is normal? No other afd lens makes that noise...

Those lenses have gears, to help with speed/force in turning. And those gears do not have "wet" lubricant (just like the "head" of the angle grinders, they come from the factory with molybdenum powder. It's not a good idea to put traditional lubricant on them, because the viscosity would make them slower, heavier, and it's easier for dust and other particles stick to them) The sound is normal, in almost all "AF" (at least those with a fast gear ratio; if you turn the focus quickly, manually, you will surely make them sound. But they don't always do it in camera)

I also like the Nikon 104mm F2 DC! 😍 Unfortunately it has a lot of back focus / focus shift when used at f2 with the DC ring set to f2 (rear) - too much to get sharp images with autofocus on my D700 and F6. So what I usually do is shoot digitally at f2.8 with f2.8 DC (rear). If I use the lens calibration feature of the D700 and push it to the extreme end, it will focus correctly on the D700 with an incredible bokeh. Unfortunately the analog F6 doesn't have the focus calibration feature. So I'll probably try your trick to shoot at f4 with DC set to f4 (rear) and will see, if it works (that means if the depth of field somehow covers the back focus) with film. BTW: If you have a mirrorless camera (can't see that on a dslr view finder) the 105mm f2 DC is amazing when used at f2 and DC set to f2 (rear). But you'll have to focus manually. The resulting bokeh is just as nice or even nicer than the one of my Sony 100mm f2.8 T5.6 GM STF lens with apodisation filter.

I got the 135mm 2.8 series e by accident on ebay, while looking for the nikkor version. Just wasn't paying attention when I got it. Well, I fell right in love with it. So much so, a year or two latter, I got wondering, if I love this thing, why not upgrade it and get the nikkor, right? So I ordered an ai version. It came with a stiff focus and optically it was FAR inferior to my E! Just a bad copy. At every f stop, I pixel peeped and it sucked all the way and unlike the E, the ai bad copy, was dog crap at f32. It still shoots decent in all normal ranges during normal shooting. Had I not had the E to compare it to, I'd never know. So I decided to try a nikkor ai-s version, hoping to get a newer, better copy... and I did! I believe I got a great copy! HOWEVER, it's only moderately sharper from wide open, 2.8 to f4 after it's all the same. This is pixel peeping, shooting the same scene on a tripod... AND unlike the nikkor ai - ais the "low end" E STILL beat the snot out of it optically! The brightness and contrast is FAR nicer than the nikkor, that the tiny spec of increased sharpness wide open to f4 still was "flatter" photo compared to the E! The build quality feel nearly the same too. Optically, the E (it's an ai-s lens, as all the 135 2.8 are) has 4 in 4 groups while the nikkor both the ai and ai-s are optically the same with 5 in 5 groups. All have 7 blades. I've come to conclude that I guess sometimes "less is more". I'm selling both Nikkor's and keeping the far superior optically, series E!... I'd never had believed it if I didn't test them myself. Unlike the tiny sharpness difference, the E had FAR superior contrast and overall clarity to the photos, with the Nikkor's both FAR "flatter".... Could not be helped in post, to match the E's raw either!

The 60 micro is just a Micro 55 2,8 with an internal TC, even the 55 is sharper than the 60 at infinity (but you need a tube extension for 1:1 with the 55 :/ ) I'll stick with the 55 anyway. On the favorites, the 500 f4 Ai-P (ridiculously sharp, usable handheld) Note aside, I also have that AF 300 f4, but since I got the 500, the 300 is rarely used (I used it with extension tubes for butterflies, large insects, but with the macro 200 Ais, I don't use it anymore). Other favorites are the 28 f2 Ais, the 105 Pre Ais (sonnar) and the 5.8cm f1.4 Pre Ai (I got that last one for a ridiculous price, I just had to clean some fungus and re-lubricate.) It's not a technically perfect lens (the edges are almost never sharp, it has terrible field curvature and coma and some crystals have air bubbles) but those defects make it very very special. Also, it doesn't have the reddish "glow" of the 50 f1.4 Ais at full aperture, and has less CA at 1,4. Most of the time I prefer to use the old 5.8cms. I have few zooms, the AF 70-210 takes good photos, and it's cheap and light, ideal for trekking; the Af 80-200 f2.8 Mkiii is great for portraits, concerts, a more specific tool. The one I want? the Micro Af 200 (now I use the Ais version, acceptable in digital, but at f4 it has a lot of aberration and a reddish glow (the lack of ED is noticeable) Works fine at f8, 11 or 16 (usual in macro) . Special mention for the TC301, it's a specific tool but it's incredible; the newer 2x version has little or nothing to envy (well, size)

His 2.8cm 3.5 is the original version of the lens, which went through at least five revisions until the last version (which I bought in 1976). The optical performance of the original is "adequate" , but it vignettes and has a lot of resolution fall off. By the last version, all of its short-comings had been resolved, and it is a secret killer of a lens. (Yes, I picked up on his desire to acquire a complete set of the original lenses circa the Nikon F, thus the early version.) I am reminded that the 105mm 2.0 DC lens is the only Nikkor I really want and which I do not have. Price was always off-putting for me, but not so much now. I'll ignore the matter of a little while and forget it since I probably would never use it enough to justify its purchase.

To use the Nikon ones (the AF-I 14E is good) you must modify the Tc mount (they have a tab that prevents it from being attached to the lens, there is information available on the web) It works well closing one step, at f5.6, but you lose autofocus. A friend uses it with the Kenko 1.4 (which does have screw autofocus) and it works fine, there is almost no difference with the Nikon Tc. With TC 2x the loss of sharpness isn't worth it. . If you want fast autofocus, the AF_s 300 f4 + tc 1.4x is a better option (it's also sharper than the AF version) The AF is great, but the Af-s is better

I picked up the 180 2.8 AF a few months ago...... holy crap! These are being sold used WAY under their value!!!!!!! I fell in such love with it, I then just HAD to know if that 80-200 2.8 AF was close. I see those were being sold for low $ too! So I grabbed one and I tested several test shots now on a tripod with the same scene, and pixle peeping they are BOTH super high quality! Neither being the clear winner! Just slightly different up their f stop range and corners being a bit softer than the other some times along the way BUT that prime didn't always win!!! I kid you not, some of my shots zoomed way in, I could NOT see a spec of difference and in some cases, that mofo zoom BEAT that 180 prime!!!! It takes killer photos, so there's no way in hell I've just got a bad copy either! It's just that, the 80-200 is ALSO just as good! If I shot a bunch of random photos and showed them to anyone, there is NO WAY they would be able to guess which lens I used. NO WAY! I picked up specifically the: Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 D ED AF Nikkor (Version 4 “New”) I'd say this zoom is also being way too cheaply sold used also, but in this case, this lens is being updated, unlike the 180 prime, so it's the 70-200 now and it's got of course the more modern AF-S which, less be honest, it is much nicer than the old screw drive (though I don't mind it) and of course VR - VR2 etc, so in THIS case, yeah, the old dated version should be selling for less compared to used 70-200 but optically, holy crap! If you're a collector, and love these crinkle coat era Nikons, you really deserve to test a copy!
