    I mostly just use my F4 with manual focus glass, usually my ZEISS Milvus 35mm f/2 ZF.2 Lens - I hate the sound of the screw drive auto focus system. If I want auto-focus I'll use my Canon EOS-1n or my Nikon F100. I think the F4 is really fun to use on occasion but it's not my most used camera by any means.

    This film is king for people who do large scale darkroom prints. U can get 16x20 prints that hold up under scrutiny from a 35mm negative. It's one of the craziest things i think I've seen.

    Let me first say, I enjoyed your video and appreciate your photographic examples. Thanks. My only disagreement is with my copy of the Nikkor 105mm f2 DC. The only way I assuredly get this lens to focus accurately, consistently is using LiveView mode 1 with pinpoint AF on my D850. Nice way to run the battery down. In addition, the changes in the transitions of OOF elements of the photo are only slightly - and very subtle - in the difference with DC engaged or not engaged. Lastly, as you mentioned, the CA is noticeable when you shoot it wide open. I'm curious, why do you like the IQ over the Nikkor 105mm f/1.4 E ? Of course, I can use the AF of the E version on my Z mount camera with great accuracy. I'm just curious where that lens failed you (with what you like to shoot). The DC version - even if it yielded some advantage - is so much more time consuming for me to use that it makes the process more involved than I want focusing a lens to be. I'll be selling mine soon - and they don't bring a very good return and mine is barely used - and in mint condition. FYI: Interesting that I own used versions of several of the lenses you reviewed after this. They include the 135mm f2.8 AI Nikkor - fun, light, small, and the Nikkor 180mm f2.8 - which shows a lot of CA shot wide open. The 180mm f2.8 was one of my favorite lenses until I purchased a used copy of the Nikkor 200mm f2 VR. Yes, I know. It is heavy, draws attention, and is much more expensive for only 20mm more, and one more stop of light. There is not much I can say about that - as the criticisms are smack on. This said, there is a reason this lens carries the reputation it did.In my opinion, it smokes the 180mm f2 images (and well it should with the difference in weight, price, and VR). I use the lens a lot and mainly for indoor sports with poor lighting and action, but I've used it for wildlife, landscapes, and portraits as well. The advantages (other than an extra stop of light) over the 180mm for me 1. Sharpness. 2. Transition zones of out of focus elements 3. Dimensionality - which many lenses do not possess. 4. No evidence of CA when shot wide open. 5. Very fast AF speed (180mm as you mention is fast, the 200 is faster - and for sports/action that is important to me. Lastly, on the Nikon Z9, the accuracy shot wide open of AF is terrific. I've performed test shots with a 70-200mm f2,8 to the 180mm f2 to the 200mm f2 to the 105mm f1.4 - all shot wide open, and all stopped down to f2.8 or f4. The Nikkor 200 f2 is the clear winner to me and my photography friends. I'd carry the 180mm anyday, and anywhere, but if I want that special look, I take the 200mm f2 with a monopod. ;-) I almost purchased the 200mm f2 Micro Nikkor, and wish I had - at a garage sale. Also own the 200-500mm f5.6 - great center focus, great VR, but relatively slow AF. Thanks again for your video.

    While I like your collection, it very much mirrors a lot of mine, I think For 50mm, even though you have 3 lenses already these can be improved upon for not much money. The f1.8 pancake is the best 50mm Nikkor F-mount lens. However there is a specific version you want to look for as there are a few different versions, all are very nice but one is exquisite. One is all black. The others have a silver band. Of the silver band ones, one has a serial number beginning with 2, it says Nikkor on the face (not Nikon E series) and it is made in Japan, it has a close focusing distance of 45mm, all the others have a close focus of 60mm. That Japanese version is the one you want. The other versions are very nice too and considerably cheaper around £50, while the Japanese one is around £175. Be aware of sneaky ebayers that take misleading pictures. Plus its the smallest Nikkor lens, which is an added bonus. I also love the 55mm f2.8 micro nikkor, but since you have the 60mm f2.8d its not necessary

    @29:08 - Why especially on film you need all the light you can get? I mean, yeah, we got limited ISO [200/400/800 films], yet, shooting 500mm (even 200mm) on f/4 - you will miss so many shots [blurry eyes on portraits] - that you must close your aperture to like f8 or more.

    Great video. A few years ago I inherited my father’s Nikon F, a 1965 model.. I appreciate it, it’s build and silky smooth lens when he bought it secondhand in the 1970s. I got hooked on Nikon, but being a poor a student, I could only afford an FM model. However, a year ago I watched a series on KZread about all of the Nikon professional F series of cameras and I decided to buy an F2 from Japan on eBay… I haven’t been disappointed either, it’s a much more polished and refined update on the original F. I think it’s slightly smaller,but it oozes quality. Like you, I have the A version of the Photomic head with AI connection. I also like the viewfinder which I find very clear and bright. It takes me back to that long lost time of my youth. It forces you to take a much more considered approach to photography.

    If the F4 had as good an AF sensor/system as even that of the F70/N70/F90/N90 systems, from the beginning, it would have been more competitive with Canon. It was just a matter of the AF, the electronic part. Mechanically, the AF "screwdriver" motor was a brute, and the F4 can handle nearly all of Nikon's lenses up to AF-S which have their own motors.

    I recently inherited my grandfather’s F Photomic and F2 with DE-1 and DP-1 finders. The latter is likely the camera that took the first photos of me walking as a baby over 40 years ago. Pop was a press photographer and suffice to say both cameras have been thoroughly thrashed then parked when he upgraded (his last camera was an F3 he used until retirement in 1991). The F2 is black however the right hand of camera is so heavily brassed it might as well be raw ;-) Yet both cameras still operate fine despite being buried in a camera bag probably since 1985 or so, just need fresh seals, a quick clean and lube and some retightening of the winders as they’re a bit loose. Run literally thousands of rolls through a camera and I guess that happens over time, even with a Nikon. You’re not wrong about the cost of some of the accessories though. The DE-1s are worth more than a decent F2 kit if in near mint condition. I don’t think Pop’s ever got used. Actually lovely to look through and the camera looks better for it too (and lighter).

    Blooming brilliant camera. F2AS is my manual focus go to. F3P is only when I do need / want aperture priority & TTL flash. I want a DP11 for the needle. I use DP3 & DP12 but it’s led is sometimes difficult to see in bright scenes outside. But you can close the viewfinder shutter to meter from the top. DP12 is SBC blue cell so very usable even today. Low light sensitivity beyond cameras of its day.

    Agreed. The LEDs are a pain, especially for those of us with less than perfect eyesight. It's also worth mentioning the huge weight. As an older disabled person it's almost impossible to haul it around whilst also using my walking stick.

    Mine has a less smooth feel than my FM. It is however a heavily used press camera that hasn’t seen a service since the 1980s, so I’m sure there’s improvement to be made. You can definitely feel the difference between horizontal and vertical shutter curtains though.

    @@SprocketHoles F3 has a fully ball-raced mechanism, completely over engineered and pure sex. I’d consider the Olympus Pen FT to be a bit ‘gritty’ feeling, definitely not nearly as smooth as the F2 or even my flogged-to-fook F for that matter.

    I have a Coolscan 5000 and had the same issue with Digital ICE. I read that it is due to some kind of problem with CPU overclocking not playing nicely with the Nikon Scan software. There might be a better way, but I just ended up creating a custom power plan in Windows that set my maximum processor state to 80%. With that change I'm able to use Digital ICE without any errors while batch scanning with my SA-21 feeder.

    Nice review but I disagree with your conclusion. The F4 is a joy to use, it just feels so solid and reliable. If you pair it with period correct lenses then any compatibility issues disappear, and there are a lot of superb AF and MF lenses to choose from from the 1970s - 1990s.

    Why would you want everything to be automatic? May as well get a cheap point and shoot. Olympus mjuii would do. But this beautiful FT is from the 1960s. Can't think of any fully automatic cameras with interchangeable lenses and automatic film winder. I own the F and the FT, and with developing and processing cost's as high as they are, I'm glad to have potentially 72 shots per roll, and it allows me to gamble on shots that I maybe hesitant to take with only half the total of available shots. The F doesn't have a meter, so it can't be a complaint on that one 😂. Made me want to go shoot with mine again, so thank you 👍

    I just bought one. I mean in the middle of this video. I paused the video and went to eBay and clicked the button. $930US with tax from Japan, 0022xxx serial number. The deciding feature for me was the option to leave the leader out when rewinding. I process my own film and this is a big convenience. I will be using it with a Sigma Art 24-105, I am hoping that the VR will work because it doesn't on my F100.

  • @SprocketHoles
    @SprocketHoles21 күн бұрын

    That VR might not work still. But you can get a 24-105 Nikon f4 used for pennies nowadays and it works fine. I use it travelling. One tip for leaving the leader out, make sure to kink the leader when you take it out so you know which rolls have been shot so you don't shoot it twice.
