In the words of Alina Veripya, the video director and writer of the script : “This is a very beautiful and deep love story that takes place during the years of Stalin’s repressions. In this horror, in this piercing cold, in this crime, the love of two people is born, as if they did not come from this world. And they are so pure, so beautiful in their feelings, that no darkness can extinguish this light." On the question of location, the team made an unanimous decision to shoot the MV in St. Petersburg, because no other city could convey the flavor of the harsh and terrible year of > 1937. Their life and love story are invaded, and broken by NKVD (old name for KGB), representatives of the regime`s power, who could pick on you for any reason, take anything from you, throw you in jail, legally execute you, and even assassinate you, shoot you in the back. The officer represents power, so he can claim anything he wants, and he can get away with anything. It`s not about forbidden love, it`s about the attitude of people representing power in an authoritarian regime, to destroy, reduce a "world full of color" down to only "a flash in the sky". The switch back and forth between images of the happy couple and images of the girl being pestered by the NKVD officer, has the purpose of highlighting the contrast between the sun-lit beauty of good and love, and the grim-colored ugliness of evil intentions. The subject of the story is the fate of beauty, good and purity under an oppressive regime, and the self-entitlement of evil, that puts it`s brutal stamp over it, with the gunshot. The screen going black before the gunshot helps keep the focus on the attitude of evil, who doesn`t know to do anything other than hurt, successfully or not - instead of on who the NKVD agent managed to hit or not. That gunshot remains ringing in the dark, making it timeless, leaving us with a bitter taste, and making it a powerful reminder of historical regime brutality.

👉 Dimash's broken, delicately breathy voice, a simple melody with uncomplcated pop rhythm (reminiscent a bit of 'I Miss You'), loving, sad but also comforting words and haunting images... and this adorable smile from Dimash... tears flow over my smiling face. For me, the lyrics, the pop beat and the images of the video all go together very well. Dimash leaves his beloved because she has someone else. He knows that the other can become dangerous to him, but he doesn't know that his beloved is being blackmailed by this secret policeman. He thinks she's happy. Dimash assures her that everything is 'okay', he accepts and she should too. Life goes on and the pain will fade. It seems easy for him to give up his love. (pop beat, almost like a fast heartbeat) ... but you can hear the pain in Dimash's voice. He's fooling himself and her. The secret policeman, who suspects something, wants to catch Dimash. When he finally realizes that the young woman will never love him, he gives her the 'choice'. She flees with Dimash... A shot is fired... End? It leaves us stunned. What will happen? You brood and brood, but you can't get it out of your head. For whom is the glass always half full and for whom is it always half empty? ... Fascinating, clever ... great! Director Alina Veripia was blown away when she learned she was to create the story and video for Dimash's new song. Dimash also chose Alina's favorite from 4 stories: A beautiful and deep love story set in the years of Stalin's repression. This love is so deep, pure and immortal, It defies the horror, the fear, the penetrating cold and darkness of this time. The video was recorded in color but looks black and white, very dark, spookey. Only the lovers are shown in a bright, sun-drenched, warm, gold-bronze setting. These scenarios reinforce the intense feelings emanating from Dimash's breathy, delicate voice and the haunting, magical and beguiling, but also from the frightening and disturbing images. The location was St. Petersburg, appropriate to the dark year 1937 in which the video takes place. (Source and more information on Dimashnews) - Music - Igor Krutoy (Krutoy means 'Cool', *1954 in Ukraine SSR). He lives and works only in Moscow- Russia always. He is singer, a world- famous composer and music titan in Russia (billionaire). His family is in the US now. Krutoy came out of retirement to write songs for Dimash. The maestro and Dimash have been working together from time to time since 2018. They are friends and have a father-son relationship. - Lyrics - Igor Nikolaev, *1959, Russian singer and songwriter; Honored Artist of Russia. Like you, I cannot contemplate Dimash being shot. So, for me, I have decided on my own ending to this video. The military guy shoots the gun up into the sky, because he realises the girl is never going to love him, because she loves Dimash (obviously!), and suddenly he has a conscience, and lets them go. So, every time I watch the video, I am happy afterwards. For me there is only happiness where Dimash is concerned. Dimash is not only the best singer in the world, he is also an amazing actor. The music and video are so atmospheric, I love it 💙 xx

If you watch the making of this video, Be aware that Dimash filmed endings but I suspect they realized that dears would NOT support the ending they filmed! Also suspect there were more than a few of Dimash’s “girlfriends” disgruntled by the actress/model in this video (she did a lovely job). I like the beat and truly it is not an easy story to relay with the lyrics. Also hits a bit closer for East Europe currently. I know Dimash filmed this in Russia, but also cancelled concert dates in Russia. Dimash has been very open concerning his feelings about War and Peace. Enjoyed your reaction! Cheers from Canada!

Tara, none of us women approve. We love his work, but at the same time we often don't. It's a struggle 😅. And then the ending, so thrilling. I was like: why don't you take cover on a side street, you fools? No one shoots Dimash. But jokes aside, I wasn't initially very into the song, as it feels too repetitive, until I saw the lyrics and the video. I see it as a calm acceptance and letting go, and his voice matches that. Personally, it reminds me that we shouldn't base our happiness completely on other people, and that some people and circumstances in our lives are there temporarily. But yes, I'd like some closure on that video. 😬

A good work always leaves something unsaid, allowing us to become partners in creativity. Any interpretation of this clip has the right to exist. In my interpretation, all the contradictions and inconsistencies between the video and the lyrics have been resolved. I had a puzzle formed when I spread the events described in the verses and shown in the video in time. The whole plot of the song is divided into 2 parts. The first part in the frame: the confrontation of Love and Coercion as an allegory of the confrontation of Liberty and Suppression (a very timely identification of modern Russian realities with the time of Stalin's repressions in 1937). The second part of the plot is out of the frame, in the lyrics. Imagine that with a shot, the light goes out not only on the screen, but also in the eyes of our hero... Dimash's character stands in a dirty gray cold corner of St. Petersburg and tells us his story... A posthumous account of the life events that led him to this reality. The voice of the disembodied spirit of the slain hero is like the rustle of the wind that whirls with flakes of snow flying in this St. Petersburg dead end, in which our hero is stuck forever... The lyrics say that the world was once colored... All the colors remained in the world of the living. There is eternal gray in this St. Petersburg lane... And the hero's memories are also MONOCHROME. He paints everything the same color. Pleasant memories are painted with warm shades, unpleasant ones with cold ones. He does not know that he died (that's why we, the audience, do not know, because we see this story through his eyes), he does not understand the nature of estrangement with his beloved (who watched the film "The Sixth Sense", he will understand), but he accompanies her year after year... He sees that over time, the girl began to "heal", spiritual wounds began to heal, although she is still crying, blaming herself for his death. And now her scarred heart allowed her to fall in love again, of course, with a worthy person. Over the years, there have been changes not only with the girl, but the soul of our character has also undergone transformations. He, too, is "cured" and finally finds the strength to accept his fate, to accept the idea that life continues for the living, and the dead must leave. Humility is included in the title of the song and video #Okay. This awareness frees him, too, making him at liberty (the idea of Liberty is very strongly emphasized in the clip). For the last time, he asks his beloved to stop blaming herself and regretting the past, dry her tears and be happy in her new life. He tells us about his feelings while showing flashbacks from his past... Wonderful clip! Thanks to absolutely everyone who helped this little masterpiece to be born!

Your interpretation is the richest and most artistically satisfying I've yet encountered. Thanks for sharing. I've also tried to fathom the song and MV and found myself interpreting some layers of the art's meaning as reflecting its sources -- the Igors, Dimash, Alina, et al -- and the context of today's unfolding war. I daresay they all have an urgent need to express themselves about the bittersweet world around them.

I only just found this song today, a year late. Some things made me wonder about the purity of the lady's love, because if Dimash's character was in fact shot protecting her, why was her facial expression so cold? Where was the horror? She was only barely even trying to hold him up as he fell...was that his last realization? I think Dimash is a genius. On. So. Many. Levels.

The music video was shot in St. Petersburg, because no other city could convey the flavor of the harsh and terrible year of 1937. 💛2U&2ALLU💛🌎🦌🦌🫠🇺🇸

Hasn't it been a veeeeerry long time since you did a Dimash reaction? What about his duet with Placido? What about his "Omir" with his brother? What about his vampire themed music video "When I've got You"? and more??? His 30th bday is coming up on May 24th, 2024 and it would be perfect for you to catch up with him when he hits this big mile stone!!! Thank you Tara!!! :)

Dimash always sing very powerful songs , so I did not expect something so calm , like whispering sounds . But still good song, and he could be good actor too. Dimash always surprise all of us . I guess we will see part 2 of this video. I did not like the final of this clip too. And I love your reaction, funny but u explain the vocal techniques amazingly

I don't think there will be a part 2.Someone else said they did scenes where Dimash was shot and the girl was holding him, but they decided to keep it open to interpretation.I don't think any of us is ready to see Dimash hurt or killed, even in a video, so I'm glad they did that.

Just to say that he doesn’t always sing powerful songs. Most of them are in a normal range with no vocal acrobatics at all. Another calm song is Amanat, it’s very beautiful.

Well, Tara, you came completely unprepared this time, you had no subtitles, and you didn't pay attention to the production. Remember: this song is created by Igor Krutoy who did it specifically for Dimash. Dimash flew to St. Petersburg and spent a few days (which is almost unthinkable keeping in mind how busy he is) to make this video. It's 1937, the worst time of Stalin's repressions (that's why it's black and white...). But I love you, and I think you should at some point come back to this song after reading the history of that time. Good luck.

There is a trend towards this breathy sound now. You hear it so much from Eilish to Styles... All my vocal coaches have taught me how to connect and press down the vocal chords - so much so - I am finding it difficult to sing in a more breathy and unconnected way. It’s like they’ve untaught the way I was in the first place! It’s so frustrating.

At the end of the video, you can imagine yourself how you want to end it. That's what is so great about it!! I love the song and Dimash's voice in this one. He is the best! This video is set in 1937 during the Stalinist purges. The secret police had total power. They executed millions of people--not just their political enemies, but also ethnic minorities who they considered "untrustworthy." Musicians, dancers, and artists were among them. Dimash as the hero perhaps represents both of these categories. End? It leaves us stunned. What will happen? You brood and brood, but you can't get it out of your head. For whom is the glass always half full and for whom is it always half empty? ... Fascinating, clever ... great!

The power is in the video, more than the song which is just the tempo for the action. Watch again on as large a screen and focus on the video.
