There’s value in reading the LYRICS of a piece before even listening. It’s evident with this piece that the intent of the composer/arranger was not to create ‘fireworks.’ It’s quite a ‘thoughtful,’ beautiful piece.

A pleasant surprise, right? Dimash lives by music, not by the uniqueness of his voice. All his talent and hard work will be laid at the feet of art, and not vice versa. He sang in a trio with Aida Garifullina and Lara Fabian and there his vocals serve as a support for two beautiful female voices. In a trio he is very modest, because it's better for performance, female voices fly and sparkle against his background =)

Actually, this song leaked out couple of weeks ago 🙈 when I first heard it, I was like u.... Waiting, waiting, waiting - and nothing! 😳 I was so dissapointed 🤷🏼‍♀️ I kept asking myself, why he goes this way, how could he sing a song like this and how Igor could compose this song for him 🤦🏼‍♀️ but when the song came out officialy with the MV, I changed my opinion.... The MV made the song for me, I cannot get it out of my head 😁 obviously, he does not have to show his crazy range to atract listeners... 😁

He caught you off guard, that's Dimash! We never know what he's going to do next and he surprises us again and again. Like last year at New Wave where he presented 3 new songs, first Stranger, then Fly Away and ended with Ave Maria - all so different but every song very Dimash. His versatility keeps impressing me over and over again - he is a music platform algorithm nightmare, impossible to put in a box or connect to one single genre or style.

Quoting the video director and writer of the script (Alina Veripya) : “This is a very beautiful and deep love story that takes place during the years of Stalin’s repressions. In this horror, in this piercing cold, in this crime, the love of two people is born, as if they did not come from this world. And they are so pure, so beautiful in their feelings, that no darkness can extinguish this light." On the question of location, the team made an unanimous decision to shoot the MV in St. Petersburg, because no other city could convey the flavor of the harsh and terrible year of > 1937. Their life and love story are invaded, and broken by NKVD (old name for KGB), representatives of the regime`s power, who could pick on you for any reason, take anything from you, throw you in jail, legally execute you, and even assassinate you, shoot you in the back. The officer represents power, so he can claim anything he wants, and he can get away with anything. It`s not about forbidden love, it`s about the attitude of people representing power in an authoritarian regime, to destroy, reduce a "world full of color" down to only "a flash in the sky". The switch back and forth between images of the happy couple and images of the girl being pestered by the NKVD officer, has the purpose of highlighting the contrast between the sun-lit beauty of good and love, and the grim-colored ugliness of evil intentions. The subject of the story is the fate of beauty, good and purity under an oppressive regime, and the self-entitlement of evil, that puts it`s brutal stamp over it, with the gunshot. The screen going black before the gunshot helps keep the focus on the attitude of evil, who doesn`t know to do anything other than hurt, successfully or not - instead of on who the NKVD agent managed to hit or not. That gunshot remains ringing in the dark, making it timeless, leaving us with a bitter taste, and making it a powerful reminder of historical regime brutality.

This song is all about the video, not the vocals. The story telling is the surprise he is giving us this time. Always innovating every time he brings something new out. It is the contrast between sweet love and evil power. So when you only comment on the vocals, unfortunately this time you weren't able to get the point of the song. The true love destroyed by a power grabbing regime, with no escape for the lovers except in death. The general will not let them stay together and he enjoyed played a game of hope and dare with them. They would not survive. I always love your reactions, and I love your vocal analyses, but this time you perhaps needed to watch the video, notice the contrasts between golden love and black and white reality, to open your mind more to really understand Dimash's creativity and how he is now pushing his musical boundaries by making a comment about politics and how destructive it can be for the ordinary people, all wrapped up in a gentle song. There are many layers in this. The lyrics are sung from the point of view of a man leaving his girl because she has someone new in her life, yet the video shows her being forced into the new relationship in order to survive under a brutal regime and to protect her man because he is being searched for by the police. It is about powerlessness in the face of cruelty. It was filmed in Russia. What is happening in Russia right now? How are they behaving? Our love is for Dimash's amazing vocals, but here he tones them down to pass on his message. We all need to realise there is more to Dimash than singing. He needs us to listen to his undertow.

😄 This is not the first song where Dimash sings in just 2 - 2 1/2 octaves. The song dictates what Dimash chooses to do and is plainly an artistic choice. Keep listening to his vast repertoire and try not to expect anything since he loves to keep surprising us. Just listen to his two different versions of A Thousand Miles A Common Dream from the original 2020 performance on a Chinese TV show and the more recent duet in China with Zhang Yingxi. How he arranges the two different songs had to include Yingxi's lovely but normal tenor voice in contrast to his own. Both songs are gorgeous but so different in his artistic choices. Note Dimash is the original singer of this 3000 year old Mandarin poem set to music.

👉 Dimash's broken, delicately breathy voice, a simple melody with uncomplcated pop rhythm (reminiscent a bit of 'I Miss You'), loving, sad but also comforting words and haunting images... and this adorable smile from Dimash... tears flow over my smiling face. For me, the lyrics, the pop beat and the images of the video all go together very well. Dimash leaves his beloved because she has someone else. He knows that the other can become dangerous to him, but he doesn't know that his beloved is being blackmailed by this secret policeman. He thinks she's happy. Dimash assures her that everything is 'okay', he accepts and she should too. Life goes on and the pain will fade. It seems easy for him to give up his love. (pop beat, almost like a fast heartbeat) ... but you can hear the pain in Dimash's voice. He's fooling himself and her. The secret policeman, who suspects something, wants to catch Dimash. When he finally realizes that the young woman will never love him, he gives her the 'choice'. She flees with Dimash... A shot is fired... End? It leaves us stunned. What will happen? You brood and brood, but you can't get it out of your head. For whom is the glass always half full and for whom is it always half empty? ... Fascinating, clever ... great! Director Alina Veripia was blown away when she learned she was to create the story and video for Dimash's new song. Dimash also chose Alina's favorite from 4 stories: A beautiful and deep love story set in the years of Stalin's repression. This love is so deep, pure and immortal, It defies the horror, the fear, the penetrating cold and darkness of this time. The video was recorded in color but looks black and white, very dark, spookey. Only the lovers are shown in a bright, sun-drenched, warm, gold-bronze setting. These scenarios reinforce the intense feelings emanating from Dimash's breathy, delicate voice and the haunting, magical and beguiling, but also from the frightening and disturbing images. The location was St. Petersburg, appropriate to the dark year 1937 in which the video takes place. (Source and more information on Dimashnews) - Music - Igor Krutoy (Krutoy means 'Cool', *1954 in Ukraine SSR). He lives and works only in Moscow- Russia always. He is singer, a world- famous composer and music titan in Russia (billionaire). His family is in the US now. Krutoy came out of retirement to write songs for Dimash. The maestro and Dimash have been working together from time to time since 2018. They are friends and have a father-son relationship. - Lyrics - Igor Nikolaev, *1959, Russian singer and songwriter; Honored Artist of Russia. Dimash is a very versatile artist. Many of his songs don't have wide range or high notes, but they are just as amazing. It can be just his breathing, his vibrato or some little but beautiful runs that affect a lot the emotional perception of his songs, and not some grand epic things. Personally, i think that if Dears requested more to react to his incredible beautiful and moving Kazakh and other songs that are just about beautiful vocals and emotion and not about vocal extremes, reactors wouldn't be so surprised...

I love the chill/club vibe of this song - he still after all these years keeps surprising us - his versatility is what we love about him and keeps us hooked. This song was written especially for Dimash by Igor Krutoy - their collaborations are must sees: Stranger, Ave Maria, Love is like a Dream, Your Love, Olympico, Know, Passione, Love of Tired Swans, Mademoiselle Hyde, I Miss You. Fly Away and I Miss You feature more Dimash fireworks than Okay but showed a new direction for him. Love your reactions. Look forward to more of Dimash - too few and far between unfortunately. 🙏🏻🇦🇺

At the end of the video, you can imagine yourself how you want to end it. That's what is so great about it!! I love the song and Dimash's voice in this one. He is the best! This video is set in 1937 during the Stalinist purges. The secret police had total power. They executed millions of people--not just their political enemies, but also ethnic minorities who they considered "untrustworthy." Musicians, dancers, and artists were among them. Dimash as the hero perhaps represents both of these categories. End? It leaves us stunned. What will happen? You brood and brood, but you can't get it out of your head. For whom is the glass always half full and for whom is it always half empty? ... Fascinating, clever ... great!

Dimash does this from time to time where he doesn't offer everything he has because the music doesn't call for it. Another example is a live performance of a Ukrainian folksong Marigold. A sort of love song to one's Mother. His Mother was in the audience and it was quite moving. When he sang Ulysse with Aida Garifullina he never went past his high tenor voice and sang mostly in baritone. Ave Maria is done entirely in his counter-tenor range and up.

You are right, Dimash has quite a lot of songs, which are not extreme vocally, and some of them are fan favorites, but the fans recommend mostly "songs with fireworks" to reactors. Most of Dimash's own compositions ("War and Peace", "Give Me Your Love", "Be with Me", "Papa-Mama") and Kazakh songs ("Give Me Love", "Omir Oter", "Amanat", "Qaragym Ai", "Qairan Elim", "Fly Away", "Kieli Meken", "Durdaraz", "Sagyndym Seni", "Don't Make Me Dream", "Kusni Korlan", "Moonlight Mother", "Leyla"), some of his Chinese ("Only You", "Couldn't Leave", "Thousands of Miles - a Common Dream", "Restart My Love", "Neverland", "Be Happy") and other songs ("Golden", "Marigolds", "If I Never Breathe Again", "Lay Down") are like this.

Demonstrating his power via restraint... Dimash is virtuosic in his ability to control both his voice and artistry. It's nice to see that the fireworks that won him XYZ things isn't absolutely necessary for his continued success, it can become a stale trick if utilized every time. You mentioned that it was all very underground-club and atmospheric, I agree; it reminds me of original trance without the long-form development. If you turn on the English captions and watch the video again, paying attention to the events portrayed in Dimash's performance, I think you'll understand his decision not to let vocal pyrotechnics get in the way of his message. His songs with the crazy amount of range tend to be his competition pieces. While I enjoy those and have mad respect for his abilities, my favorite songs of his are actually his Kazakh folk and folk rock songs and the songs like this one where he is telling a story in music video form and we get to appreciate him as an actor as well as a vocalist.

Nice reaction. I think Dimash did a lot of his vocal acrobatics for competitions where he had one chance to wow the judges. But also, he uses the style and range that he thinks best express the feelings of the song he is singing. Sometimes he sings high notes to show off a bit, sometimes to wow judges and sometimes because it's the best way he can get across the emotions he wants to convey. When he doesn't need them, he doesn't use them. I'm glad you talked a lot about the airiness of his voice. I think it was even airier than "Ikanaide"! I also had the thought that he was trying to see how much air he could use without losing the words.

Thanks for your reaction, as always very interesting, even if this song is indeed different (but it is not the first one, there are others without "acrobatic vocals" for ex. Amanat is also a very sweet and beautiful song). I think he chooses the way of singing to fit what he wants to pass on. He does not sing for showing off, his voice serves the music. For this reason, he refuses to clarify his exact range: he said in an itw that it does not matter, what he wants is bringing joy and peace to people. Please continue to react to him: his Kazakh folk songs are amazing (Daididau, Samaltau), some ballads (Love is like a dream, Autumn Strong (Arnau version)), and my absolute favorite one: Know (New wave and Arnau vocalise version, both are mind-blowing).

Well, I'm glad you've discovered another side of this artist. It is important for Dimash, first of all, to convey to the public the meaning, emotion of the song. His broad vocal abilities are just a tool with extensive capabilities that allows him to perform this main task. In this particular song, the choice of a whispering voice is not only a tribute to fashion, but it corresponds to the plot of the clip in which Dimash performs the song on behalf of the disembodied soul of the murdered hero. The whole clip is a flashback of the soul stuck in this world, which can only be freed by letting go of your beloved, allowing her to live on, allowing her to love someone else, allowing her to find happiness again. Of course, this is not the first time Dimash uses such a technique without demonstrating vocal acrobatics. For example, "Amanat", 2021, kzread.info/dash/bejne/i2aE09CHY5TWfJM.html in Kazakh, or "Fly away", 2021, kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZqRm07GCpJzOlLA.html in English, or "Marigolds" , 2020, kzread.info/dash/bejne/iqCslNKmf5awqrg.html in Ukrainian. Of course, these are not the only examples in his very wide repertoire :)

When I heard this weeks ago, I was enchanted. He was singing the love story (the version I saw was captioned in English.) And while you don’t comment on the cinematic quality, it strongly spoke to Dimash’s ability as an artist able to match his instrument to the message. For this story his choices weren’t aimed at showing off his techniques that we are so familiar with, but serving the story. I did love seeing your surprise, Peter. Songs that are not reacted to very often but are super interesting to analyse: Jasmine flower (with the anime character), vocalise, blizzard again (the duo), Amanat, Qaragym ai. The last two are without fireworks but much more interesting than this one in my opinion. Also, I think what Dimash excels at is singing traditional kazakh songs with a modern spin. Daididau (bastau or singer 2017) or Samaltau (tokyo jazz festival) are a must watch!

It may be unusual for what you heard already but it is not unusual for dimash to stay in his mid range for a whole song. He may access a head mix occasionally even in those but he keeps it pretty even keeled. You just haven't heard those yet. Those would be Give Me Love from his digital show in 2021. (Not to be confused with Give Me Your Love) Interestingly you're not the only one who's mentioned the Billie Eilish vibes. Also this speaks your point about how versatile he is, this song alone lets you know that he doesn't have to sing in every range he's got in order to produce a well written beautiful song.

It’s one of the few songs where he doesn’t show his wide vocal range or vocal exercises other than that incredibly soft, breathy voice. Perhaps the content of this song is more important to him than showing his vocal ability. I think that’s a very good choice for this song. At first the song didn’t appeal to me that much. I wasn’t alone there. You’re not used to such a “normal” song from Dimash. But together with the MV, a masterpiece. It moved me incredibly. All his songs and especially the MV’s have a deeper meaning. I love this one so much. It’s now really one of my favorites. The MV is about the time during Stalin’s repression in 1937. Back then, the secret police could do whatever they wanted. I think this officer for some reason was looking for Dimash’s character and then forced his girlfriend into some kind of relationship. She had to endure it to protect the love of her life. Realizing that she never stopped loving Dimash’s character, the officer ended it in his own way. The video was shot to the end, but the scene at the end where he dies in her arms was left out. I tell you this, because I don't know if you are interested to know the content of this video at all. Just in case 😁

Actually, most of his songs don't have a wide vocal range. Many of his Kazakh and Chinese songs, for instance, but others as well. And those songs are all so beautiful, as beautiful as the more epic ones to me. Because with Dimash it's about artistry and emotion in all he does. He always chooses what's right for the song.

@@DiaLinwen I think you’re right. That’s why I’m always happy to recommend his Kazakh songs. I’m always a bit sad when they only react to Dimash because of his octaves or vocal acrobatics. The emotions that he conveys, the love for music, which can not only be recognized by his vocal range, often falls by the wayside. For example, I think all his MV’s are real masterpieces. They always say something, stimulate thought. You can literally feel the love he puts into his Kazakh songs and it’s so contagious that you have to love this country too without ever having been there. He’s just a great artist, not just a singer.
