Vintage Scuba: Scuba Tank Backpac's - S02E12

Спорт

Early divers had no comfortable way of holding the tank to the diver so many ideas were tried and forgotten. Alec shows the evolution of tank backpac's from war surplus belts to the Hawaiian style to a 5 point harness with integrated chest weights.
** In this episode of Vintage Scuba **
- 1953 scuba tank and pillar valve (no "O" ring), with war surplus web straps only
- Alec's first scuba tank, a late 1950's Aqua-Lung 72 cu/ft with a hard plastic frame holding the tank
- a Nemrod tank with a smooth fiberglass backpac from the tank bottom to valve
- a 1960's home made Hawaiian backpac with a steel back plate mounting folding and padded shoulder hooks
- a "Normal Air" integrated full face mask and snorkel with weight integrated chest plates

Those war surplus stores must have been gods gift to dyi guys. Very interesting to see how backpacks have evolved.

Oh, and I forgot the normal air... I want one! All I need is a inner tube from a car tire to make it a BCD and I have the funkiest dive kit on the boat!

WOW...some pretty expensive and new devices now have both a switch and inverted tank(s). 😎

Alec, thanks again for sharing. Amazing, the stuff they had back then. Very clever designs for what they had.

I just finished my PADI eLearning exam and I'm already watching videos about vintage equipment. I'm so excited to dive for the first time maybe a little scared thanks for your videos.

So, T-Mac, it's been a year now; how did it go? Did you get your OW Certification? Have you continued diving?

Nice show Alec. Love the early strap harness. The second tank pack originated from mountain rucksack frames from WWII surplus packs. That rucksack frame is still available in surplus stores and I used (and the US Army still does)such a rucksack and frame clear on up to about 2005, until we came up with modular packs. They are still in use. Thanks for sharing!

Very cool to see all these backpacks. My dad once shared this story of his first experience with diving back in Hong Kong at the time when BCs weren't used and they just wore the tank on their back with a backpack. It's so cool to see what that gear looked like from you, thanks for sharing!

My first Dive trip [that I can remember] was back in the mid '80s with my dad. And yeah, now I've been researching full face masks, cuz I breathe in through my nose, and that is awkward when its isolated in a pocket. I've done snorkeling, and free diving, and can get by with a short adventure. But to invest in SCUBA, I am after a more 'natural' feeling of breathing. Like the full face mask of the past. (But today's comforts of the nostril plugs to aid in equalization.). Thanks for displaying the iconic gear, and revealing methods in archaic fashion. Much appreciated. -AJ Schultz

The plastic pack with the integrated boot is such a good idea. Cambands seem so precarious, especially when you have to carry the gear on land, and the full weight of the cylinder desperately trying to escape the band. A set up like this integrated into a BCD, that's adjustable for different lengths and diameters of cylinders would be fantastic. Maybe made from aluminium or carbon-fibre for travel, and a steel version for cold conditions.

Alec upside down tanks are used in the military for diving as its easier to use the tank valves while diving without removing the tank tk do so. I served in the british royal navy doing mine clearance diving duri g 1970 to 1990s. And this is the type of kit we used but mostly twin sets. Hope it helps Anthony

Hi Alec, Cool segment. The British during WW2 had a similar quick release buckle for it's Paratroopers. Saw earlier you are featured on a Leisure Pro website, a utube video you made on Yoke or Din. You explained differences well. Love watching your scuba channel. Best Regards

Well I can imagine why this one is upside down, Firefighters wear their tank also upside down, one reason could be you can open the valve by yourself. Maybe they had the valve also upside down for a safety reason. I was a Volunteer firefighter for almost eight years, I should have asked them why they wear it this way.

You have the reason exactly. Also my fireman friend says falling debris is another reason. Thanks for sharing Ben. A.

Hey Alec, hey Kevin, I've been watching your videos since you've started making them. And I find them really cool, educative, interesting and also funny indeed :) Although I am not vintage, I still remember the tank mounted directly on my back just using straps. As my father used to dive since 60s and it became my passion ever since he took me under water in 90s. Not sure if you know, but we here in Czech republic (central Europe) have really solid base of scuba divers and dive clubs. Sounds odd as we have no see here, huh? :) Still we have lots of nice places here like old flooded quarries (bit cold, worse visibility, but still fine) and a lot of czech divers don't mind to travel long distances to nice dive spots. I would like to extend the audience of your videos to the czech divers, which are very passionate about the sport. So I was thinking if there is chance you to enable the video subtitles translating option (at least for some videos to test), and I would be honoured to use my diving knowledge (language knowledge too) and make some translation for czech guys here. Appreciating your job , keep doing great videos :)

Hi Pavel. Glad to help divers everywhere learn. Pick 2 or 3 videos you think will help Czech divers the most and we can let you add translations. If your fellow divers like them, we can open up playlists or individual videos. I dive quarries, rivers and lakes here and none are considered warm! Thanks for watching. Kevin

Hi Kev, thanks a lot, I would start with some videos that interested me and then I will share it here to see the response and if to continue. I would like to start with kzread.info/dash/bejne/imV-ya2dY5vfd5M.html and maybe kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIBopdetp9LVgtI.html And the vintage series would be nice to share too, but lets start with those 2 I put above and see. There is a bit difference in the diving equipment as we use 99,999% DIN valves and steel tanks and also I can see huge shift towards DIR setup and techniques here in Czech R. But still, the main concept of diving and physics does not change over the years :)

Hi Alec. Another great video that I’ve just watched. That tubular steel/harness backpack is almost similar to the one I used when I first started scuba diving back in the early 60’s. The only difference was the metal part was painted black. I’m trying to recreate my original gear set-up from those “Halcyon” days of yore and was wondering if you’d consider selling this backpack. I heard you were selling some of your collection but have not been able to access your You Tube page. If you could find the time to reply to this inquiry, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Barry.
