A catalog from 1960 that looks like it came in the mail today. Incredible!

I take excellent care of my vintage gear which is why I can show it today in almost new condition. Something few modern divers do with their own gear.

Not a diver but a knife collector. I love vintage dive knives. The Vulcan is one of my favorites. Thanks for the info

The Vulcan was apparently a Vietnam war favorite so It's not strictly a dive knife. The sheath was not well made but it was a neat knife. Alec

Big, useless knives were a thing back then. My father used to wear this gigantic 7", 2lbs thing strapped to his leg even when just snorkeling back in the 60's; funny when you think about it today. Cool video.

Yep. Me too. It was part of the diver image and part because we were told that you might need it. It does seem funny now but I recall the look of awe from kids staring at me and my big knife when I was about 14 years old. Sure good for your ego. Take care. Alec

The only downside to the Mk5 knife is getting it out quickly. I think that's why it was nicknamed the Shark Billy. Divers couldn't get the knife out fast enough so they just batted a shark on the nose. Alec

VERY cool video Alec! Say, the 3rd knife (big heavy one) you discussed? You didn't tell us the name of the manufacturer? In reference to other posters talking about "modern cheap Knives;" I have an early 1990s IST knife made of 440 stainless, and I can tell you - this is certainly NOT a cheap-made knife. This grade stainless has just enough carbon-content to take a VERY keen edge. Thanks again for all your time in creating these GREAT instructional videos for us all!

That knife was also made by US Divers (Aqua-Lung). It is one of the nicest-looking knives and quite rare too. Stainless steel is very common for dive knives now. Stainless steel is just normal carbon steel with added chromium. It is less likely to rust and corrode (NOTE: Less likely - stainless steel will rust if not kept clean). Generally stainless steel is easy to sharpen but it won't ever be as sharp as a good carbon steel knife and it won't keep its edge for long. You can get a good edge on a stainless knife but you must be careful doing so or you can ruin it. It's the best choice for divers since they are used underwater and in salt water plus, divers don't need a keen edge. High carbon steel knives are the best for those who need a sharp edge that will hold it's edge and that's easy to keep sharp. So hunters, fishermen, butchers, carvers, etc. choose high carbon. Once it's sharpened properly and well, a quick touch-up on a sharpening steel or a stone will keep the edge of a carbon steel knife good for a lot of work. . Not many divers are knowledgeable about knife sharpening. Maybe I can do a video about that. I was a meat cutter (butcher) for many years while in University so am pretty well versed in sharpening knives. My dive shop was one of the very few that had a 'dive knife sharpening service'. I wonder how many divers have "Sharpen Dive Knife" on their gear maintenance list? Thanks for watching. Alec

I have several of these knives Dan and they are all identical except this one. This particular one is simply unused. My others are used, well used in some cases with rusty blades, well-worn wood handles and battered sheaths. All are original "Made by Morse Diving ...." knives. I'm not an expert but the similarity of these knives plus the obvious quality (weight, material, finish, etc) tells me it's an original. BTW I just checked on eBay and these knives sell for crazy money - $500 or more in some cases. Alec

Yeah, the length of a knife has to do with a task. Anyone arguing about the length of a knife is probably someone sitting on a couch. Just noticed a bunch of posers bitching about this. Well, I mean if your going out there to cut rigging out of propellers the size of half a house in waters filled with scum and trash, you need a big strong sharp knife that will cut through metal. If your going out there to fuck someone up, you need a certain kind of knife. If your going on a vacation dive with some fish, you need a little knife, maybe. Most people who whine about this seem to be you tube vacation trip people. But the size of a knife, is just the size of a knife. I look at this guy, and I think you need nothing but a rubber knife. Almost every knife you held up there is a heavy piece of shit. With exception of the vulcan. Nice light blade.

Good points Peter but back in the day, before we were environmentally aware, everyone had a full bladed knife because diving was dangerous! Looking back on my early diving days I HAD to have a knife to dive or your laughed at. Yup, very macho back then. Today we know EMT shears or a small BC knife/tool is all that is needed if it gets past airport security. We actually are smarter divers today. A

Was then known as "Leaded Bronze" if it had been Brass then it would have possibly suffered from "de-zincification" or similar maladies.
