    Here in the US I haven't seen any of these speed bumps (as we call them) on major highways like in this video. They're common in residentil neighborhoods to slow traffic down, especially if there are lots of families with children around. But speed needs to be kept down inside a neighborhood. The ones you show here seem to be a real hazard in my opinion. What an unusual cobra! Sounds like it must be a hybrid if you've never seen one before! Thanks for this video!

    We have speed bumps here in the US but you don't see them on highways or roads that are such as the one that you're driving. Usually, they're in neighborhoods, pretty much to protect playing lids, I'm guessing. I'm constantly amazed at some of the beautiful locations you travel to (such as the place under remodeling that was overlooking the ocean) but to think about deadly snakes just outside the walls would be a little nerve-wracking to me. Otoh, I've removed bark scorpions from my front porch and inside out house in the kitchen. I've also accidently stepped on a Rattlesnake...while taking a break after riding horseback with a couple of Native American friends. It rattles and I felt the vibration on by boot. You never saw anyone leap on our horses and ride off like we did. It was stunt man-type stuff. How I wasn't tagged is beyond me. I suspect we were both so scared of each other. lol!

    Yes. Here in New York we have “speed bumps” but mostly in parking lots and at airports to prevent speeding, not on the major highways or city streets and none here in Manhattan itself. They do have a rough strip of “bumpy/ridged” pavement on the soft shoulder of the major highways outside the city. They are to alert any driver who may be falling asleep at the wheel and heading off the road (they make the car shake & rumble).

    Jason, I see LOTS of people asking about this snake, we are all curious about any updates. Has it been DNA tested? We have some DNA testing evolving here by a company called Rare Gentetics. They are even doing Ball Python morph DNA. They started off just testing if your snake was a male or female, but they keep expanding and getting samples to compare so they have a base to go from. I wonder if you have anything like that in SA...or if you could get ahold of Rare Genetics and see what they can do. They might need multiple confirmed sheds from the type species you think might have hybrid, if nothing else they might be able to say, it's definitely a hybrid...just don't know what the second species is. I am so curious!

  • @jasonarnold-snakeman

    @jasonarnold-snakeman

    6 ай бұрын

    Hi Amanda. I didn't bother. DNA testing was going to cost far too much for my little pockets, as I would've needed a sample of this snake, a normal coloured Spitting Cobra, plus that of a Snouted Cobra, which is what I figured it might've have hybridized with. It was released a few weeks later after discussions with a few contacts. It turns out that it was just an unusual colouration for a specimen from Durban, but not uncommon to see them like this in the highvelt regions, apparently. Perhaps it was just a hitch-hiker from up country. 😊 👍🏻👍🏻

Nothing really exciting, the odd Eastern Brown, carpet pythons, common tree snakes and brown tree snakes. 30min up the road at Lamination Nat Park you can see Death Adders, Red bellied blacks and Tigers to make a few. Nice catch. With regard to those speed bumps in that particular stretch of road, there have been many accidents. If I am not mistaken, they eventually installed those that you drove through after a horrible accident after a friend of mine and 2 of his friends lost their lives there. I use that road regularly and there are a few side roads that lead off from it, at certain points of the, traffic becomes quite heavy and cars used to speed through without the speed bumps, making it quite dangerous for cars turning in or out of those side roads. Yes, for emergency vehicles, they are quite cumbersome, but I personally feel that since they have installed them, the road has become a lot safer due to the reduced speed that it enforces.

  • @jasonarnold-snakeman

    @jasonarnold-snakeman

    Thanks Kimal. Yes I have no doubt that the road must have been dangerous before the speed humps. People drive really badly and dangerously. But it's very frustrating for us emergency services. Especially when people have a Black Mamba in the yard and a 15 minute trip now takes 25 minutes bevause of the 30 odd speed humps along the way 🙈🙈 But fully agreed that they make the roads a lot safer 🙏🏻👍🏻👌🏻 I'm so sorry to hear that you lost a friend there 🙈😟😧😕🙏🏻

    Great work Jason, mind this was great to hear you say you have not seen anything like her before. As for the speed bumps here in the UK there are many, they use them to try and stop the kids in there cars and bikes mainly. But you can hit that bump on a crosser going flat out and barely feel it. But yeah there not as bad on the main roads. Anyway Good Job 👍💯👊

    Hi Jason, I live in Cape Town.. so not out in a different country but just 2 or 3 days ago I was going over a speed bump really slowly and it still got the underneath of my car. I'm not sure if a polo is lower to the ground or not but they often get me. Even if I'm driving at a snails 🐌 🐌 pace. A friend of mine told me about your channel recently and I think what you do is awesome. As well as the fact that you don't charge for the rural call outs. I think that's amazing of you.. I know you said they might kill the snakes rather than pay but with those roads and pot hills your car must take a beating. This was a beautiful snake, I'd love to find out what it is. Hope you'll let us know when you do. Keep on keeping on. 😊 🐍

    Nice catch. Really looked like a hybrid of a Mozambique Spitter and a Snouted Cobra. I wonder how she will turn out once she has shed. For the speed bumps: over here in Germany you almost only find them in cities or neighbourhoods where traffic has to be slowed down. Outside of cities they can be found only occassionally on dangerous stretches of country roads but usually then there's a warning sign ahead to signal the speed bump. At least that's how it's handled in my area.

    In Brazil they have speed bumps on the arterial roads in NE. Usually where the main road goes through a small settlement of homes. I would not like to drive at night in case I missed seeing one or a sign.

  • @TonyRule
    @TonyRule2 жыл бұрын

    We have a lot of speed bumps in NZ cities but not on main arterial routes like that. In many cases they're installed on side roads that offer a way around the clogged main roads - the 'rat runs'. They used to put in chicanes, but had the same problems with emergency vehicles like fire trucks not being able to negotiate them. Often they're put in at the behest of residents, who 6 months later want them pulled back out because the noise of cars accelerating after them is worse than people driving slightly faster than the posted speed limit.
