Velocity Comparison between 16", 18" & 22" Barrels - Big Horn Armory

We get a lot of questions on the velocity differences between the different barrel lengths we offer. With most loads we typically see more velocity out of the 18" barrel, but different loads yield different results. In this test we're shooting the Federal 500 S&W 325gr A-Frame Bullet.

I like the 18" (guess that's why I bought one) of course the 22" with the 7 round magazine looks damn good, better than the 22" with 5 round mag.

For better results I would have liked 10 shot for each size of barrel, with handloads at max out. With the amount of gunpowder grains too to be extra nerdy. The point of the video I see was to show the little difference going above 18" , where mostly it's about style and preference. Thumbs up from me 👍

Can you do this with 454 casull and explain the different capacities you offer based on barrel length?

  • @exothermal.sprocket

With quality loads from Buffalo Bore, DoubleTap, Grizzly, or Underwood.... you'd notice a more dramatic spread of velocity with the barrel lengths. Federal's load is already pretty much max efficiency with shorter barrels. I'd go with 18" probably, to grab max magazine capacity.

This is an impressive rifle, particularly the .460. A non-lead bullet under 200 grains might crack 3000 FPS, plus you have an array of heavier flat-nose cartridges that serve their purpose well.

Convinced the wife to let me get one. Justified it by telling her it’s the one gun that can hunt the world. Living in Iowa so mostly deer hunting but my brother lives in Alaska so big bears and moose are on the table. Would you recommend the 500 or the 460? Is there any notable accuracy difference between barrel length? Thanks! I’m looking forward to getting mine

this video needed to have been done. thank you. also have you guys done significant longevity testing with the auto max (as it pertains to barrel wear)? also do you think you could get a significant improvement in velocity with the longer barrels if you handloaded with a rifle powder instead of magnum pistol which would be in commercial loads?

  • @BigHornArmory

Our nitrided barrels reduce barrel wear to near insignificance. We have guns with thousands of rounds through them. The barrels look like new. Unfortunately, case capacity and expansion ratios make longer barrels relatively useless. You can't put enough rifle powder in the case to achieve any velocity increases.

the 500 S&W is a pistol cartridge designed around the 12" hunting pistol offered by S&W. even the 16" barrel is longer then needed so the muzzle blast difference between barrel lengths will be minimal.

The issue here is Federal's loads. ES is kind of high, they aren't loading the cartridge anywhere near max potential, nor using powder that would benefit rifle barrel lengths. Going with Buffalo Bore, Underwood, Grizzly, DoubleTap would show the potential of the cartridge, or develop your own loads with slower burning powder for the rifle barrels (as compared to revolver barrel).

I own a Henry in 45-70 and later I am going to try and get on of the Big Horn Armory rifles but I am having a little bit of a hard time trying to figure out which one I would like to get out of the 475 linebaugh the 500 linebaugh or the 500 S&W is there one you would recommend.

I would recommend the 500 S&W, unless you already have an investment in the 475 & 500 Linebaugh calibers. The 500 S&W has more power, is easier to obtain factory cartridges/components and easier to handload.

Using standard pressure rounds in your rifle, the foot pounds of energy at the muzzle far exceeds that of the 45-70. Yet another reason I need one of your rifles here in Alaska.

My 45/70 marlin pushes 420 grain slugs out at 2100 FPS. You guys need to make a 50/100. (Comparatively speaking). I think your ammunition sux w such incredible velocity spreads. Maybe you can get some loader to make better/hotter ammo. Bring that cartridge up to 45/70 energy standards & beyond!! Make a better grizzly gun & the world will beat a path to your door...And extend ALL your magazines up to full bbl length. Short magazines on a long bbl is kinda stupid.

You must have the magic Marlin. Our testing using Marlins using a load a couple of hundred feet per second slower using 400 gr bullets increased headspace to unsafe levels in less than a dozen rounds. We bent several of them. Have you checked your headspace lately?

Big Horn Armory , No need. Ive been loading my own for 30 years for BIG grizzlies & have 4 marlins. 2 guides ( which i hardly ever use because of their recoil & reduced velocity) and 2 regular 1895s. Both versions in blue & stainless. Carry the stainless during the summer & the blue in the winter ecause the cold of Alaskan winters makes the stainless more brittle. EVERY loading is full length resized & length cut. I dont expect more than 5-6 loadings per case w my hot rounds. Dont care, when your facing bears w garbage can sized heads the expense is the LAST thing Im worried about. Live in the bush & 12-14 ft bears are NOT uncommon. The BIG bears get big by going deep & staying the hell away from people. Theyre not stupid. I have to double crimp my loads to keep them from "jumping" loose in the magazine & use a triple thick magnum oversized buttpad to NOT break my shoulder. And yes, every shot streaches the case but gets trimmed back every reload. Out of hundreds of rounds have only had 2 partial case seperations. Thats why I junk em after 5 loadings. The old marlins are tough guns. DID dissassemble them all & round off/polish all the edges of contact so they cycle smooth & fast. Even polish the chambers to mirror bright & keep em well oiled w Prolong motor oil treatment & have prolong heat treated all my bores which really "slicks" em up. Unless my chrony is wrong, my velocities are true/consistant but Im a real stickler on EXACT loads. My varience is usually 10 FPS or less. Your FACTORY 100 FPS variances SUCK. As for your velocities staying consistent throughout bbl length I think your factory loads have reached their peak in the shorter bbl. My "short assed guides" lose 200 FPS w tremendous muzzle flash from unburned powder & THAT is not acceptable. My friends dad (A gunsmith) came up for a visit & saw one of our "giants" up close. Scared him so bad he custom made a 45/110 rifle for him but it was a bolt & SLOW for multiple bear attack situations. He prefers my loads better in HIS Marlins. (fast follow up shots if needed) My loads. Exceed BUFFALO BORES by 10%. As for the new Remlins, Im pretty sure Remington has screwed them up too. Everything George Soros touches turns to crap. Remington USED to be one of the best, now their best is mediocre at best. I got a new Remlin w a 22 inch bbl but am going to tie it to a tree & pull the trigger w a rope from behind cover a few dozen times to see if it can hold up before using it in the field. Lost my other 4 marlins (old ones) when the cabin burned down. These newer versions seem to be thinner & the craftsmanship is DEFINATELY inferior. Will keep u posted on how things turn out when we return to Alaska shortly. In the meantime thou, seriously consider making 50/110s. With the new craze of bigger bore super thumpers Id bet your market would jump. Id get one of yours but the 45/70 still exceeds your bullets capabilities. Not by much, but enough to make the difference. And im betting, that like the 454 Casull outperforming the 44 mag w less recoil your 50 would do likewise. I was amazed at how much less kick the 454 had w the same weight slug & higher velocity over my 44 mag. ( my 44 loads are 320 grain WFN hardcast @ 1100 FPS) ONLY shoot em in my ruger redhawk because Ruger double charge shoots all theyre cylinders/bbls & micro checks em before selling them. For what its worth, my 44 cases dont last very long either. 4-5 loadings & theyre done. Dont care, ONLY concern is having as much "thump" for the big bears as practically possible thus eliminating carrying a 50 BMG.

Not really sure I believe this guys load data. It's pushing over 4100 ft lbs of Ke. I own several Marlins in 45-70 and every time I get around 3700 ft lbs of Ke the actions pop open when fired. I called Marlin and the were very serious about not going that hot with loading stating it's too dangerous for their actions. I also live in Alaska and know some of the guys at Wild West Guns (good guys BTW). They tried to build a 500 S&W in a Marlin and the action didn't hold together.

That's exactly what I did. I couldn't see spending an extra $300 for the 16" or the long barrel. I settled for the 18" no extra charge on it and I love it. It pairs great with my S&W 500 wheel gun. Thinking about either getting a model 90 460xvr or the 500 automaxx haven't made up my mind but it's a lil waiting list to get the Model 90.
