    As a general rule the 7 ft/lbs per pound of target makes sense, however I wouldn’t call it an always rule. By that standard a 1000 pound moose requires 7000 ft/lbs which is more then traditional elephant cartridges such as the 470 NE or the 416 Rigby. A 3000 lb hippopotamus would require 21000 ft/lbs which is more then a 50 Browning. A 5 ton elephant would require 70,000 ft lbs which is more then any military 20mm Cannon. On the other hand I wouldn’t shoot a 2-3 once starling with less then five foot ponds from a pellet rifle which would be more then double the stated standard

    @@outdooradventures1696 I really enjoy your videos, but I’m wondering about your 7X theory. By your own explanation, that would mean you’d need 7,000 ft lbs energy to take down a 1,000 lb moose. That’s a lot. Is there a diminishing return in those numbers?

    I'm trying to figure this out. I have lots of boxes of 17hmr ballistic tip, matter of fact I've never even seen hollowpoints on the shelf to buy before. Was it only the 20 grain that had that, and was that the point to compare apples to apples since the others were 20 grain as well? My ballistic tips are over 2500fps.

    Nice comparison. For me I like the .17 wsm because its much cheaper to plick with. The Hornet is a center fire bullet and does out perform it but at a much higher cost. Hornet cost - 75 cents each time you pull the trigger WSM cost - 29 cents each time you pull the tigger. So if you like to shoot alot I think the WMS is a great trade off.

    Thanks for your kind words. I think that a 25 grain is a great idea. I just picked up a couple of boxes of the hornady 25 grain hp yesterday. NOBODY in town seems to stock it though. 17 hornet is a center fire no comparison to the hmr or wam. You should compare the 17 hornet with other 17 center fire calibers. Like the 17 Rem. The 17 Rem will walk all over that 17 hornet and still is the fastest round in 17 caliber

    Hello YoungTimmy. Thanks for your kind words and for subscribing. The 7 x body weight rule is not any kind of official hunting regulation or anything but is something I heard awhile back and then started to apply. It has worked out pretty well so far.

  • @jimdent351

    @jimdent351

    outdoor adventures - I don't mean to criticize this 7x rule of yours, but it is way too high. With that rationale, my 300 Win. Mag. is not even adequate for moose hunting. A 180 grain .308 bullet leaving the muzzle at 3100fps only delivers 3840 flbs energy. Meanwhile a good bull moose weighs approximately 1500 pounds. Knowing full well myself, however, that a 150 grain .277 cal. bullet with a MV of 2800 fps, and a ME of 2611 ftlbs is more than enough to kill that same moose, I would say that your 7x rule only needs to be 2 or 3x max.

    Greetings Mr. Dent. Thank you for your comments. You bring up an excellent point. The video was mainly geared toward the 17 caliber bullets that typically have extremely light weights of 20 to 25 grains. The 30 caliber bullets are 9 times that weight and therefore they should be viewed in terms of Jules delivered rather than ft lbs. Thanks again for watching. :)

  • @jimdent351

    @jimdent351

    7 жыл бұрын

    outdoor adventures Not to be an ass, and I say this with complete respect for your well made video. The 7x comment doesn't fly with me for any cal., and here's why. First of all, when making my 30 cal. comparison, I'm talking about a bullet that is 9 times larger but is taking game 40 to 50 times larger than a coyote. Which the 17 HMR would work well on coyote. It's about knowing your limitations and not exceeding them. Secondly, what difference does it make if the unit of measure is in joules or foot pounds? At the end of the day, one quart is very close to one litre, and one foot pound of force = 1.36 joules. Hence, a 17 HMR that produces 250 ftlbs will produce 339 joules, so any cal. can be measured in joules. In a nutshell, we everyday people talk in foot pounds, and scientists talk in joules, newtons, etc. All I'm trying to say is many air rifles producing far less energy than a 17 cal. will cleanly and effectively take a coyote, if the shot is true. On the other hand, a bad shot from a high powered rifle would cause that same coyote a lot of pain.

    Thank you for your kind words mr Hovda. If each cartridge is zeroed at 100 yards, then the hmr will drop 9.26 inches at 200, the 17 wsm will drop 4.13 inches at 200, and the 17 hornet will be 2.20 inches low at 200. I hope this helps.

    Love the comparisons and your thorough explanations!!! Great job and thanks. I wonder, though, might one be better off with the .223 Varmint round in these situations? It turns out less expensive overall and is a reloadable cartridge, as is the hornet. The explosive quality of that varmint round is completely devastating and is good for far longer distances than any of the 3 mentioned here? Granted, it's a 40 grain bullet, much larger than these, but if your policy is to exterminate, should go for the higher expectations. Or am I thinking wrong?

  • @outdooradventures1696

    @outdooradventures1696

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thank you Mark Johnson for your kind words. Much appreciated. Keep in mind that when shooting the 17 calibers, (as with any caliber) when the speed increases the sound increases. The .223 40 grain round is faster than the 17 hornet (3800 fps vs 3650 fps), is also a larger caliber, and sits on top of 22 to25 grains of powder compared to the 17 hornet sitting on top of 12 to 13 grains. These factors will increase the sound to the point where hearing protection is a must. Shooting the 17 calibers without hearing protection is definitely not recommended either but is a more forgiving proposition in case you needed to do so for 1 shot in a hunting situation and did not have time to grab the hearing protection.

    Great video! Ive found the 17 hmr to be too light for coyotes. I've shot two. The first one I shot broadside at about 40 yards and accidentally shot him in the shoulder. The bullet exploded on it and he ran off healthy. I saw him come out of the brush at about 300 yards and looked at me and walked off. The second one was facing me at about 75 yards and I shot him right in the front of the chest. It dumped him pretty good. It will get it done but not ideal. The bullets are too fragile.

    the speed of sound is 1126 fps at sea level. So for the .17HMR your bullet would go trans-sonic at about 270 yards. Not between 300 and 350 yards.

    I have to dispute one of your first comments about the hmr when you started the comparison. It does not only come in hollow point. Maybe that's all you found in the 20 grain. I have 17 grain vmax hmr rounds that have the red tip.

    The red polymer tipped bullets are still hollow points. The polymer tip helps initiate the expansion and improves the ballistic coefficient.

    I worked for a pet food processing plant for a little while. A 22RF was plenty to put down cows with a head shot at 50 metres. Energy means nothing without penetration, placement and expansion. It is also NM, Joules, KG/CM or LB/ft, NOT ft/lbs. It is a measurement of force, How many Lingual BS per square foot, Not how man feet per Lingual BS

    your math is a bit off. 10x the target weight is not linear, and the speed of sound is 1,125 Ft/s so the 17hmr goes transsonic around 265 yards, not 350 yards.

    The speed of sound is definitely 768mph which is the same as1125 feet per second. 994 feet per second is below the speed of sound. Hope this clears things up and thank you kindly for watching.

    Why are you covering the boxes on the whole line ie. muzzle velocity? You should show each line across so we a see and compare each round to one another to make simple. And the video would be a lot lot shorter and the information easy to compare.

    I applied fishing to hunting if you use the smallest line to catch a big fish you get more satisfaction when you catch it and if you can verify it you can get your name on the record book now just apply that to hunting. Thx

    pher8487 when you shoot a small caliber at a larger game they suffer more he's saying that you need enough energy to take down the animal with minimal suffering hunting it a sports but hunting ethics is part of that sport just like fishing for trout they don't want you to use too large of a hook because it tears up there mouths they suffer if ur line breaks because it's ok you loose the fish but it has a good chance of living on you shoot a animal with too small of a caliber they live for days in pain I am not a tree hugger just a hunter with ethics

    lol your rifle loses 125ftlb going 100yds holy crap thats two150lb crossbows worth of energy just escaped from your round in about 1/25th of a sec thats crazy...going fast when your light weight is costly it seems...what would happen if you necked down something like a .338 to fit .22 25gr would you get a crazy fast 5000fps round or is 5000fps faster then the gas expansion ? 🙂👍

    You'd probably only get about 10 shot before your barrel was junk. another problem is keeping the bullet together much over 4500fps. custom alloy bullets are expensive

    I had no idea the HMR is that slow. Depending on where you are it looks like the WSM, or hornet, though I wonder how tough that hornet speed is on the barrel.
