5 Things to know about the .500 Auto Max

Ойын-сауық

The catch phrase for the new AR500 in .500 Auto Max from Big Horn Armory may be the best of the year. “It can handle anything from prairie dogs to Pachyderms to Peterbilts.” That’s some serious stopping power in a platform weighing less than ten pounds. It’s time we learn about that round.
For more info on both the .500 Auto Max chambering and the AR500 platform that fires the round, check out our review at Guns.com. If you’re wondering what the .500 Auto Max has to offer over, say the .50 Beowulf or other large caliber AR-15-based rounds, that and other details can be found there, as well as plenty of big hunks of lead going downrange.

I love it. Ammo cost will be relatively low despite being extremely niche because the only unique component is the rimless brass. So except for the brass, it shouldn't cost more to reload than .500 S&W. Being designed as handgun cartridge, it will work well even if you choose to shoot it out of a shorter barrel, though it responds well to added length. I'd love to hunt big game with a suppressed .500 Auto Max. Ever since I heard of it, I stopped dreaming of owning a .338 Win Mag Browning BAR or Benelli R1 or a 9.3x64mm Brenneke Tigr-9 (Dragunov). I'm sure that Benelli is great, but an AR is much better. A 2 or 3 round magazine is very unappealing. An AR I can customize for my use. I could hunt whitetails with subsonic rounds or bears and bison with supersonic rounds. A threaded rifle barrel would be great but it would still be effective and handy as an SBR, pistol, or with an integrally suppressed barrel, if you don't need the utmost in power. .500 Auto Max is just what I'd want for, say, cape buffalo. Big dangerous game that typically require multiple hits of extremely potent ammo. Plus I can use the same rifle suppressed with subsonics as a quiet hunting rifle that sounds like a .22 but hits like a .30-30.

Yep, .500 are so expensive that it forces shooters into reloading and if youre reloading why not make buckshot shells 700grain and everything in-between. The heavier a bullet is the more fun it is shooting suppressed and slow. Its just like that dream you keep having, I promise. With the proper bushido training you could have that whitetail gutted skinned and cleaned before its face hits the dirt.

I am a hand loader, BUT, sadly, the 500 automax has so damn much power you can't run CHEEP .50 bullets for the 50 AE. you need HIGH QUALITY bullets for the 500. (Not cheep). Very sad.

"Three pulls of the trigger puts as much energy on target as a .50 BMG" That's a cute sales pitch you've got there. Even IF kinetic energy DID work that way, your math is still pretty sketchy. Buffalo Bore's own website lists the .50 Auto Max as 4257 ftlbs @ 25 yard, 3849 ftlbs @ 50 yard, 3126 ftlbs @ 100 yard, 2023 ftlbs @ 200 yard, and only 965 ftlbs @ 400 yards. This cartridge literally bleeds off energy as fast as a .22LR Meanwhile, even a LOW grade of .50 BMG doesn't lose more than 25% of it's energy in that range, going from 13,109 ftlbs @ 25 yards to 10,050 ftlbs @ 400 yards. I guess as long as you have a target that's within a few feet of you and is willing to patiently wait while you fire off 3 rounds, you have the "equivalent" energy of a .50 BGM....😅

@Spectacular Spectacular I thought about your question driving to work this morning, it's a 2-hour drive to work some days I had a long time to think about it. For most people, they don't know what a Chris vector is. Hell I didn't even know they made a MP5 in 10 mm, I've heard of a CZ scorpion don't own one, I have some mags I might pick one up someday for a gimmick, but that's just the thing to most people these little short barreled rifles are gimmicks. it's like the American 180 kind of cool idea but it's still a gimmick would the American 180s stop a grizzly bear maybe? You want to ind out? would that Chris vector in 45 ACP stop at grizzly bear maybe. would a 500 Smith & Wesson Magnum with five shots stop a grizzly bear? PROBABLY, your probably be better off if you wanted to go that route of making up a short barrel AR-15 they have more penetration than those pistol rounds. I get the feeling, your whole idea is more of a spray and pray tactics then a couple well-placed shots from that big rifle or that big pistol. My automax is only 9 shots, but they are 9 shots as fast as I can pull the trigger. If ANYTHING can survive those 9 hits and still kill me. It's my time to go. Pleanty of BIG bears are killed and have dozens of pistol rounds in them. I have killed deer and elk and found big rifle bullets and fragments in them that were healed up. Do what you want, but, use enough gun.

@Spectacular Spectacular I've killed some of the biggest animals in North america, I've seen animals go a long ways shot to freaking pieces. You take a bear full of adrenaline rush and you shoot him with that gun he's thinks hes getting stung by a bee. It has ZERO KNOCK DOWN POWER. he's going to kill you, yeah he may die eventually 4 or 5 minutes later 30 seconds later 12 seconds later but you will die before he dies. I've seen black bears rip 3-inch trees in half and pull them roots and all out if the ground. Shot all the pieces with high powered rifles, I saw a cub bear with his guts literally ripped out of its body run a quarter of a mile before it died. (He was grazed and his intestines hoked a knot on a log- EVRYING diaphragm to the rectum came out). He ran 1/4 mile! now you can doubt me, you can think that you're Ultra high-powered 9 mm penetrate anything bullet will get the job done, center of mass ain't going to get the job doneyour talking to somebody how's been there'. A charging bear goes 40 mph,you don't have one to shoot 30 shots, 3 to 4, you better be a good hip-shot too. You don't have one to aim. Again your talking to somebody's been there. I have never killed a grizzly bear with anything small, and I'm never going to there's a reason why Alaskan hunting guides use things like a 416 Remington Magnum. Feel free to take your squad guns (designed to kill humans) against a BIG BEAR. Go earn a dawin award.

@Spectacular Spectacular I followed him more about your argument, your debate is the exact same as the old debate which is better an arrow that cuts his massive penetration or a bullet with hydrostatic shock. yes, I have a 5.7 with armor piercing rounds 20 of them yes would eventually kill a bear eat them only put three or four through it probably killer bear it has no expansion it just make little bitty holes hit something vital it will eventually die the same with that bow and arrow same with your special bullets ultimately though you will die before the bear dies. That's the difference of knockdown power versus penetration

@Spectacular Spectacular okay, I don't mean to brag but it is a fact, I have several snake guns and anacondas pythons and I have more 1911s than I can honestly remember, one is a Ruger black nitrate on stainless I love that gun incredibly accurate, as well as the actual Colt governments but I have put those away and I usually carry the 10 mm 1911, have a Kimber tle, and my woods gun is a Remington Hunter long slide in 10 mm. But, when I really get serious, I break out the Magnum revolvers, or desert eagle.

I have had mine about a year now. Never had a more problematic weapon. Doesn't like to feed, doesn't like to extract, have sheared off two charging handle retention pins . Extractor is so tight is doesn't function half the time. No mag survives more than a few loads without having to reshape them. Have fired less than 150 rds out of it . Two and three rounds at a time. Zero support from BHA. This is an untrustworthy rifle. If you want $2500 dollar wall piece, this is the rifle. The most disappointing weapon I have ever owned. And I have had shit I just through in the lake.
