VAN LIFE: DIY spare wheel mount how to for less than £15! Diary of a van man 61

Something i've been meaning to do for a while now, and it turned out awesome!
I've had this spare wheel lurking about everywhere but the van for two years now, after upgrade to the hifly all terrain tires i couldnt fit the new bigger spare under the van where the old one went and i couldnt store it in the van cos it took up too much space!
All i needed for the job was:
5 galvanized nuts and bolts with washers, i used 12mm but if you can get 14mm or 15mm that would be great.
an extra 10 nuts
some push fit pipe for custom spacers
a little paint and a little silicone.... sikaflex is best.
sheet of 9mm ply
i already had the tools and the paint ans sikaflex, ply was scrap wood so all i bought where the nuts bolts and washers, cheap as chips!
Hope the video helps you if youre having the same issue i did and dont want to fork out hundreds of pounds!

I’ve been trying to figure out a way to mount my spare to the back door on my ambulance. The door is thicker than a normal van, I might try doing what you did. I’m just concerned if the door can carry the weight of the tire. Years ago I owned a Sportsmobile Ford E350 with the spare mounted on the rear door, but eventually the weight of the tire caused the sheet metal to start tearing the door where it was mounted. Thanks for the video and idea!

I used the wood to help spread the weight of the wheel, so far it’s doing great! No sign of warping or anything. Hope it works for you!

@@LETSGOYONDER BTW-I used that same style of drill bit during the reconstruction of my ambulance into a camper. I was surprised how good it worked drilling through steel. Started with a small pilot hole and then used plenty of 'cutting oil' going slow and steady. I was thinking of a 'swing-away' hitch tire mount, but still like your idea, and it is something I can do myself, as I don't know how to weld, and the store bought hitches are big $$$$.

You should really consider putting some sealant around where the bolts go through the door. Water will find its way in there and rot your board, plus mess up your insulation and cause mold issues.

Just discovered your channel. Enjoyed this vid, not sure about the spare wheel fixing, did you consider putting big flat penny washers under the heads of the bolts to help spread the load so the wood doesn’t distort over time from carrying the weight on a very small surface area. Hope this helps. kind regards, K33F

@@LETSGOYONDER This was wintertime and he lives on a riverboat so probably every day, even so 😆 Once a week I think is a bit extreme. I know it's wrong but I never cleaned my house chimney for 12 years lol. I used to burn old CD cases and even old computer rewritable disks plus some aluminum Chinese food cartons. Extreme heat from the CD cases and the fumes from the aluminium kept the flue clean 🙂👍 It is also a larger flue though.

that is actually a great tip to do the wheel hanging... I have been thinking about doing the spare wheel on one of the doors of my sprinter dwelling but have been putting it off for too long so it seems... Since I like pieces of cake and like to eat them as well I will go forth and hang the wheel on the the lower part of the rear door (which has a bit more room as you propably know) Update: I was ready to start the hanging of the spare wheel when I got thinking (bad thing for progress I know) I first have to ask you Leon, how does the wheel holdup (pun intended) ? I reckon the hinges having to deal with the added weight won't like it too much.. your thoughts/observations please. I did bite the bullet on other matters inspire by you: I got the same flat black CIA paintjob... very nice...

Just curious-Did you install it yet? How did it work out? My wheel is an 8-lug BUDD Wheel and really heavy. Just wondering if the ambulance door will handle it ok!

  • @koningbolo4700

    3 жыл бұрын

@@Nonthanburi2 I skipped the wheel hanging for now. My spare wheel is not that heavy (a standard 15 inch steel mercedes sprinter rim with a rather normal sized tire on there) and I feel the added weight may cause the hinges to get damaged. I am not worried about the skin of the door itself (I suspect a plywood backing would prevent any tear-outs) and even 5 holes for every mounting hole seems overkill too, but the weight may be too much for the two standard hinges. I am looking into fabricating a separate frame which hinges on it's own hinges and is mounted the same way the original hinges are fixed to the body of the van...
