V7E20: Going Sideways in the Laurentides

This week, I explore the Laurentian Mountains north of Montreal, Quebec. Fall foliage is peak, as I discover secluded lakes, rivers, campsites, and primitive roads. Things go awry, and some issues with the Jeep prompt me to head into the nearby town of Mont-Tremblant. At the end of the week, I experience a picturesque ski village, and enjoy a rugged four-wheel drive track into the mountains!

I just had to point out that 99% of KZreadrs would have put a shot of the Jeep on its side for the thumbnail and titled this episode " I FLIPPED MY JEEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!". What I appreciate most is that you let us experience the moment as you did, unexpectedly. This point of restraint and intellectual creativity did not go un-noticed!

I don't usually post a lot of comments on KZread but felt the need to in this case. I know you don't respond overly to comments so I don't expect you will to this one. And that is okay. I discovered your channel about six weeks ago and have pretty much watched every episode. I mirror what your friend told you. Don't quit. Your channel is definitely one of the most under rated on KZread and I always look forward to your videos. You live the kind of life traveling that I dream of. I'm glad after all of this that you and the Jeep are okay. It is understandable that you would be more than a little shaken by what happened. Take what time you need to regroup from that. Above all, thank you for all of the work that you put into these videos. I do want to let you know that they are appreciated. Take care and be well. ~Angie in Alaska

Chris, First, my wife and I are emotionally vested in this episode. Having recently sold our Jeep and knowing what it means, we are saddened by the turn of events. But, we are THRILLED to see you are okay. As much as the Jeep means to you, your safety and well-being are THE MOST important things. ALL OTHER THINGS can be replaced. As we continue to watch the episode, we want to compliment you on your fortitude and level-headedness. I don't know many who would have stayed calm, continued filming and let the general public be ringside to such an emotional and potentially devastating event. We aren't oblivious to reality... I'm sure you had a few choice words to say and some off-camera reaction that we would all expect. But to keep going and bounce back the way you did is inspiring. This is one of your best episodes so far... just for the display of perseverance you have shown. You are a trooper and truly dedicated to the lifestyle and adventure you have chosen to seek. We hope to imitate your attitude and approach when we start living full-time on the road in the future. We wish you luck and please know that if you EVER need anything and are in our knick-of-the-woods, we would be honored to lend a hand. (Hampton, VA for now, headed to Colorado Springs, CO by the end of the year.) Sincerely, Gary & JoAnna

Chris. I too have to comment. My wife and I watch your story religiously. We have a Jeep and a small camper that supplies us and our two young children with quite a bit of adventure. Your adventure is the asymptotic extreme of what my wife and I would dream about if we had not had the little miracles. Your style of video is our absolute favorite and is the only KZread channel that really captures the essence of this type of adventure because of the way you film and edit. In addition, by the way, your photography skills have grown before our eyes. Anyway, this episode is especially impressive. You still did not use this situation as advertising or click bait. We were amazed that you had the will to document the situation despite how unbelievably stressful it must have been. Continue on this amazing journey because we are all right there with you every week!

Greetings from Guatemala City, Guatemala, Central America. As an avid fisherman, camper and traveler, I unfortunately have been in a couple of similar situations. You just can't stop, let me tell you. The best comment/advise that I can give you is clearly explained in this Carlos Castaneda's quote: "The trick is in what one emphasizes. We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves happy. The amount of work is the same. The basic difference between an ordinary man and a warrior is that a warrior takes everything as a challenge while an ordinary man takes everything as a blessing or a curse." It reminded me of the Matt Damon quote from The Martian, near the end of the film. When he's survived and back on earth. He tells the new NASA recruits that when faced with disaster you "Work the problem. You don't get emotional you just WORK THE PROBLEM.....and then you work the next problem, and the next one and the next one. You do the math, you figure it out. And if you figure out enough of them you get to come home". Well done sir. I saw that you were shaken by this and cannot blame you. But you positively WORKED THE PROBLEM and you got to come home.

After all, life in itself is an adventure, sometimes we are well and healthy and sometimes we are under the weather. Here in Canada, you have entertained us every Friday with beautiful scenery, wonderful adventures and most humble presentation I have come to see on KZread. Each and every Province in Canada deserves to entertain you whenever you enter it. Do not quit like you were told. Do not let any accidents discourage you from your dreams. Here in Ontario, if you are ever in Ontario especially in the GTA area. You are my guest as you please. Please contact me I will forward you with my personal information and it will be an honour and a pleasure to host you. This will be our way to say to you Thank You. It has taken me a few days to pull some thoughts together. First, “Wow”. Not at all what any of your subscribers were expecting. I was watching with a buddy on Saturday morning and we were totally shocked. Disbelief actually. I believe i have watched almost all of your videos and through all of them the one thing that stands out is how meticulous you are about being prepared, prudent in your decision making, and cautious and deliberate when driving. It just goes to show nobody is immune to accidents and there is risk around every corner. Which makes what you are doing even more exceptional Chris. None of us are safe. From accidents or health issues and all manner of unforseen challenges. We all applaud your pursuit of your passion and willingness to embrace unconventional lifestyle. Your resolve was seriously tested. Thankfully you weren’t seriously hurt. And “Wow” - what a vehicle! That Jeep of yours is amazing!!

My friend, that Jeep is amazing (because you have carefully and meticulously made it that way), and you are an inspirational human being. What you have overcome to do what you do - and allow me to do it vicariously through this vlog - literally inspires awe in me. The world feels a little better because folk like you are just being what you are. I'm so glad you're safe, I'm sorry it happened but you got a great anecdote out of it. From my heart here in Ireland "May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, the rain fall soft into your life. And may God hold you in the palm of His hand." Voyages sécuritaires, bonne chance!!

Quebecer here. I've spent a lot of time north of Montreal - St. Michel des Saints and northwards. I've been broken down on remote roads (East of the Manouane Reserve) and I know the feeling. Not to take anything away from the good Samaritans, but most folks traveling in those areas know the importance of helping when it is obviously required. Glad you're okay and happy that you landed on your feet. Cheers.

Chris, when the screen went black then came back up with the Jeep on its side, my heart sank!! I’m so glad things weren’t worse and looking forward to seeing if issues pop up down the road. Stay safe and roll on!

Wow, you got out of there with the best possible outcome. Could’ve been lots worse had there been trees or a rock face there. It’s always reassuring knowing there are good people out there, willing to help a stranger in need. Keep on keeping on!

“OH MY GOD!!!” My wife screamed out loud, when she saw the Jeep, on its side. We are glad all is okay and you powered through, my friend. See you next week and she said, “be careful, no more scaring the crap out of me!”

I literally cried out when I saw the Jeep in the ditch loud enough people came to check on me lol. Apparently I am more emotionally invested in this than I realised :) It's great you got back up and running. I know it will take awhile to shrug this off upstairs in the noggin. That's OK though. Nothing wrong with a little funk for awhile after something so big.

Like they said back in the 80's, "Shit Happens"! Your friend Casey was right on with his advice. No serious damage, you weren't hurt and now you have battle scars! They build character and every Jeep needs them. :) Soon you'll be looking back on this minor indecent and laugh about it. I've made this comment before to you but I really appreciate that you don't feel the need to have background music blasting and we get a better feel for what you experience. Also, I know the extra effort it takes for you to stop, place and camera to get the drive by shots, then have to go back and pick up the camera. I don't think I'd have the patients to do that but it really enhances your videos.

Chris so glad you weren't hurt and the damage was minimal. Glad some help stopped by and you were able to get going again. Thought you did a great job of drying out all the relays and stuff, way to think it all through. Stay safe and motor on! Thanks for sharing!

Chris, I'm glad to hear you're ok. I think life can get monotonous and the person upstairs throws a little wrench into our lives to ensure we remember life can be dangerous and to enjoy it while we can, stay grounded and focused. Keep driving and making your videos. I would love to be doing half of what you are. Don't quit so some of us can live vicariously through you! I would also have to say a big shout out to the Jeep for that incredible vehicle.

Chris, I am glad also that you are physically ok. I rolled my 1st jeep in 1975. Now you can truely say that you are an off roader. I enjoy your adventures, and this event just adds to them. You made me laugh when you took what looked like the first sip of coffee out of that to go cup. Just the pleasure on you face. Best wishes and KEEP THE SHINNY SIDE UP!

Could have been so much worse. Thanks for filming the progress after getting the Jeep back on it's feet. Some very smart things to do that I never thought of before. Thank you for sharing and hope everything gets straighten out. E
