V7E21: Back in the Swing of Adventure

Following the mishap that occurred last week, I get back in the saddle and venture into the backcountry of southwestern Quebec. I spend most of the week off-grid, plotting a 175 mile unpaved route to Ontario. Memorable scenes, including a spectacular sunrise, and simmering bacon, while unrelenting rain saturates the roads. The week concludes with pizza in Almonte.

Chris, again I have carpet that's in great condition from my 14' Rubicon that you can have. I'm in Michigan about 30 minutes south of the Saginaw Bay. The carpet has been in a storage bin for more than a year. It's completely fine and free for you.

I'm glad you're doing okay Chris those pictures at your first stop where is spectacular. Just a little heads-up now that you're in Ontario moose season is over at the end of the month the first two weeks of November is deer season so just watch yourself when you're out in the back country you may come across some hunters if you're going to be walking in the woods I suggest you get some orange. Other than that have a safe trip. You're okay in Algonquin Park there's no hunting.👍👍🇨🇦😀

Chris, you should put some fabric softener sheets around your Jeep to keep mice out. They don’t like the smell of it. We do that with our RV and have never had mice issues over winter. It’ll also make the inside of your Jeep smell nice. :)

Head to Baja this winter as that should dry out the Jeep. I use socks filled with Sophresh unscented kitty litter. Its a desiccant that absorbs moisture and odor. Most larger pet stores have it or an equivalent. Its also reusable if you warm it in an oven or over some heat. Just place the filled socks around and they do wonders.

Happy to see you bouncing back so nicely after your incident. But then again I expected nothing else given your great attitude. As usual superb storyline and production values. A cooking tip - for nice evenly cooked crispy bacon turn the heat down a bit. Fine bacon is like fine wine. They both take a bit more time than the not so good stuff. Not that bacon in any form can be bad. But perfect bacon is, well, perfect.

When you get a chance, get hold of a dehumidifier. We had 40+ inches of rain in tropical storm Imelda here in southeast TX back in Sept. My wife's new car flooded some 2 inches inside. The wiring connectors, sensors below the carpet and mat were saturated. Radio quit, intermittent operation of various electrical things on the car. I put a 20 inch box fan inside and a small 30 Liter unit. I left one window cracked open about 1/2 inch. I removed all standing water from car with my shop vac. With no visible water and the carpet appearing dry, I still had to dump the water tray twice a day. After 6 days, the unit no longer collected water. The stereo is back and so are the windows. Its worth a try before the moisture begins to deteriorate the wiring further. The odor can be removed with a pan of charcoal and fan.

Additional comment (#2) I was watching your May 19 to 26 2017 Vlog... you made a comment on going "down in a non-maintained road" but you turned around because you "didn't want to die in a flash flood" wise move... however I have to say once I did find myself in a similar situation with my "safe" camping spot that had a great view of the flood areas. It was an awesome experience to just watch, safely, from my camping spot. the natural geological processes of the flash flood progression. As you did later in the video, however, it took me three days of "chilling" to get to the point I could get out with some assurance of not getting stuck in the mud, however a lot more distance in just mud... similar to what you had to get out of... I will say... it was great fun...

With the smell... 2 methods come to mind... 1) charcoal for BBQ's but without any accelerated as in igniter ( that would smell like oil and fuel) 2) baking soda... with a couple pie tins, spread it out in the pie tins and place them in the jeep. It works best in warm to hot dry conditions and I realize you are in a rainy cold area but it's cheap and if you keep the jeep closed up it may still do you some good... Just a thought! Oh and don't forget WD40 displaces moisture and helps your electronics work better when wet

I've been a subscriber since you started modifying the jeep for this life-style changing adventure. At the time I was looking for tips on modifying my own JKU for a similar overlanding tips having just retired from the Park Service. Little did I know that I would be a follower for this long. My trips while not continuous like yours, can take up to 3 months at a stretch so I feel a kind of kinship with you. I guess what I like about your post is the absence of background overdubbed music, the silent ambient stillness or the roar of a waterfall is enough and probably the point (or at least one of them) of the trip. Your videos look more like my trips than any others on U-Tube. They communicate the realities and the rewards of life on the road better than any on the internet. I also have an inside appreciation of the difficulties of putting these videos together as I have tried it and don't have the zen like patience required. So i guess this amounts to a long thank you, and keep it up.
