Upgrading/Replacing the hard drive in a Laptop with a solid state drive HP Pavilion 15

Ғылым және технология

In this video I show how to upgrade from a hard drive to a solid state drive. The laptop shown is a HP Pavilion 15-au023cl. In the video I also show how to remove the hard drive from a laptop with a more standard cover.
I show how I use a desktop computer to clone the data from the hard drive to the laptop and talk about other more user friendly ways to do the cloning of data.
This is the SSD I used in the video
amzn.to/29ECQv1
Another SSD I recommend in the video
amzn.to/29PU4Ik
This is a USB to SATA adapter cable used to connect a drive to your computer and allow copying of data
amzn.to/29E1gUo
This is an adapter that allows you to replace the DVD or Blu-ray drive in your laptop with a 2.5" hard drive or solid state drive.
There are two thicknesses for this adapter. 9.5mm or 12.77mm. Be sure to check which thickness drive your laptop currently has. You can do this be removing the current drive and either looking up its model number on Google.com to find the thickness or you can use a ruler to measure it.
amzn.to/29JfSDD
This is an external enclosure for a hard drive or solid state drive. In the video I talk about things to do with a working hard drive after replacing it with a solid state drive. With this enclosure you can use the drive as you would any external hard drive.
amzn.to/2a9DzTV
This is the one I have. It has the same 64bit set along with some other useful tools and a carrying case.

Some laptops still have a DVD drive bay, and for those who need the storage capacity, but the larger capacity SSD price is a little prohibitive, get what is called a 2nd drive adapter which will allow you to put the hard drive in the DVD bay and run the SSD drive as your C: drive. I did that, and loved the performance and the idea that I was able to keep my media in the 2nd drive as well. I'm glad you mention this in your presentation, and showed the drive caddy adapter. What is really nice is when you can get 2 SSDs where the smaller one is the C: drive, and the larger capacity SSD is the 2nd drive. It will really scream then. Especially when you download a large file directly to the second drive. You can watch the transfer times greatly improve. Great and informative presentation. Thanks.

This is an excellent presentation emphasizing the manual's mistakes and showing with precision how to do the job. I have 15-au063cl and seems to be a very similar model. in no time I was able to disassemble it and with the hint about Samsung SSD software the job was a piece of cake. The only thing I forgot it was the battery disconnection. But, lucky me, was not a problem. Thank you Michael, when in NJ I will buy you a beer (or 10). Good job !

I wish when you buy a new laptop, one could clone everything from the old laptop to the new laptop with only one cable.

THANK YOU ALOT FOR THIS! I received the same HP Pavillion as a gift a while back (mine is gold colored) and ever since its been a headache finding inf or tutorials for it. In over 18 months this is the first video I could find with someone opening up my laptop. Its a great computer and is more than capable for the majority of things I do. I have been trying to find a way to upgrade the video card somehow but it comes "integrated". Iv'e looked into external cards but there is no thunderbolt/type c port to do it. If you can think of a way to upgrade my video card specs somehow let me know. I'm just going to end up linking an xbox to it lol. I'm still learning about all this. I just recently finished my first html cert. Thanks again

Great Video , me as a tech totally agree with you, why manufactures put such a large hard drive in a laptops is getting really silly some are now getting 2tb drives in them, If they were to put more SSD in laptops the price would come down on SSD. It seems the OEM's are trying to make it harder for us guys to try and repair laptops just putting a small compartment door like we used to have would have been an easy job to put a new drive in rather than having to split the laptop and then risk the customers warranty. I am surprised that they don't solder the ram in as well so we can't upgrade that to. Once again Great video keep up the good work.

Looked fairly intimidating to open when I was about to do it, but after watching your video I had it done within minutes. I do miss the days when every laptop was easier to upgrade though; when removing the HDD was just a case of removing a couple screws. Even the weird non-standard HDD connector HP have used seems to have been in an effort to dissuade the casual consumer from upgrading it if they get that far.

Listen for "pop-pop" clamp noises as you do it, your not cracking it(sounds like it).. Keep Bic pen lid flat as you trim around. Worked for me.👍 Question. My Battery(BP02XL) has a "pillow" looking design on each side instead of a flat surface. Has an intendation in the middle separating them. Normal?

I have an HP Notebook with a Hard Drive that has a partition formatted for FAT32 and another Windows Partition formatted for NTFS. I am really having a hard time cloning the drive over to a SSD as I keep getting errors saying basically like "incompatible formats between the source and destination drive". Have never had this problem before and have run out of ideas. I was able to create a Windows disk image of the source drive but don't seem able to make the computer boot to the Windows system repair disk despite having changed the BIOS to boot to the CD drive. Got any ideas?

Great Video - very informative. One suggestion I would add is to place a towel or thick cloth underneath the laptop when turned over to protect the surface. If the unit was put on its back, and say a screw/foreign object had been accidently left underneath, this would certainly leave a mark or scratch. This once happened to me, but it will now not happen again!

  • @MichaelTheComputerGuy

    @MichaelTheComputerGuy

    5 жыл бұрын

To me that seems redundant. All you'd be doing is replacing one surface with another that could also have some piece of debris on it that would cause a scratch. I've been using this table for 10 years and it shows. The table is very scarred up and looks awful but it is not hard enough to leave a scratch on any laptop. As for debris being left behind and causing a scratch I make it a point to wipe off the table on a regular basis.
