Adding a 2nd hard drive or solid state drive to a laptop by replacing the DVD or Blu-ray drive

Ғылым және технология

In this video I show how to install a 2nd hard drive or solid state drive into a laptop using a caddy which replaces the DVD or Blu-ray drive.
I also show how to move the Desktop, Downloads, Pictures, etc. folders to the higher capacity 2nd drive.
Finally I show how to delete the Windows folder on the 2nd hard drive using a program called Unlocker.
This is an adapter that allows you to replace the DVD or Blu-ray drive in your laptop with a 2.5" hard drive or solid state drive.
There are two thicknesses for this adapter. 9.5mm or 12.77mm. Be sure to check which thickness drive your laptop currently has. You can do this be removing the current drive and either looking up its model number on Google.com to find the thickness or you can use a ruler to messure it.

    Thank you for making these instructions easy to understand. I am planning to put a 1TB in the CD Drive as I don't use this anymore. I have a DELL Latitude E6440 with a docking station that I love but didn't know instead of changing the current 240 SSD it has I can just add an additional drive to save all games, movies, videos and pictures.

    An excellent tutorial video on how to add a 2nd HDD to your laptop after installing an SSD to your C Drive. It gives you excellent instructions on how to set up and use the replaced HDD as a 2nd drive for storage of your Windows files. He shows you how to move your C drive windows files over and get rid of the windows file, plus how to use "Unlocker" Prog to do it. Overall a very comprehensive set of instructions. Thank so much.

Not only have you answered the problem of adding a permanent mobile drive to a laptop, you have also added sufficient setup and config info. And on the commercial side, the links to the various vendors of the Caddy are included. This video is awesome.

    Good video. You need to relocate your swap file, if you use one (I do not), to the mechanical drive You also should direct your Temporary files to your mechanical drive also. This will greatly reduce the write cycles to the SSD. Use Macrium Reflect to image your SSD to an image file on your mechanical drive. These steps will increase the lifespan of your SSD greatly. Unlocker is a great little program. :)

    Excellent tutorial video. Thank you very much. This is my first attempt playing with computer drives so I will need all the help that I can get. I am putting a new SSD into an older Acer laptop C drive but I would like to pull a HDD from a Dell laptop that just died and use it as a secondary storage in the Acer optical drive. The HDD from the Dell is half full and I want to be able to keep all the documents, downloads, pictures, and videos etc. If I move the empty folders from the SSD to the HDD, do they just merge? Or can I just delete the blank folders on the SSD drive and the future files will be saved in the secondary drive automatically?

  • @MichaelTheComputerGuy

    @MichaelTheComputerGuy

    5 жыл бұрын

    I think to do that right it would be more of a multi-stage process. What I would recommend is moving the files off of the hard drive from the old Dell system to a external hard drive. Then I would format the partition on the old Dell drive. At about 17 minutes into this video it shows how to redirect the music, download, Etc folders to the secondary hard drive. Once that set up then you can reconnect the external hard drive with your files and copy them to those folders.

  • @Sourdoughgirl

    @Sourdoughgirl

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thank you! The reason I thought I could just moved the files over because your secondary drive was also used, I assumed you had those old files there too. So far, the SSD is not working in the Acer. I got the PXE-E61 error asking me to check cable. I have disconnected and reconnected the SSD multiple times, replaced the cell battery, but nothing seemed to work. Put the old HDD back, everything worked again. I put the SSD into the optical drive, it showed up as a secondary drive just fine. The SSD is much lighter than the original HDD, but that still doesn't explain the loose connection. Weird.

Following your tutorial old HDD I put in Caddy as second drive 'D'. However I don't want HHD 'D' (in caddy) to spin all the time instead go on standby when not being accesssed/used. Can that be done? Hi Michale, thanks for the very helpful video, I had a question I'm hoping you can help me with: I want to upgrade my laptop (Dell G3 Gaming Laptop) hard drive. It came with a 512 GB SSD which is currently installed and I just bought the 970 Evo Plus 2 TB which is considerably faster The motherboard has slots for two SSDs, so I could either: A) Keep my existing 512 GB installed and ADD the 2 TB drive in the second slot and install the games on the 2 TB HD, OR B) Clone my 512 GB to my new 2 TB drive and then swap them out I want the fastest load times for games. My guess is that if I did A, my boot load times would remain the same (since the OS is installed on the 512 GB SSD, but since the games are installed on the 2 TB hard drive, the games would load faster Vs doing B, which would speed up both the OS loading time as well as the game loading time since everything is now on the 2 TB (much faster) SSD. Am I right? Or would doing either give me the same gaming performance (remember games are installed on the 2 TB SSD in either case). Thanks!

    I haven't tried that, probably. Go into the BIOS and change the boot option that hard drive first. Alternatively you could swap this drive into the other spot. It may not complete the boot though. Moving a copy of Windows to a new computer doesn't always work. If it doesn't in the BIOS try changing the control from AHCI to IDE or from secure boot to legacy.

    Thank you for your video. I have recently put a 125G SSD into my laptop but it's already running out of space. I reformatted an old HDD and can use it in the optical bay for additional storage. Will it be possible to relocate the user folders (mine & public) and the programs files folders (there are two of them) to the secondary drive by changing the drive location? Do I have to create a new user account in order to move the user folder over? I have seen other KZreadrs did the copy-and-paste resulting in many complaints about computers getting messed up. That's a scary thought. If it's possible I would like to keep just windows and a small photo editor on the SSD, the rest can go to the HDD. Is it doable?

    Watch the video from about the 17-minute mark. It shows the process of moving the files to the hard drive. To move programs from the SSD to the hard drive what you have to do is uninstall the program and then reinstall it onto the hard drive. Whenever you start installing a program one of the first choices it gives you is where to put the program. Essentially what you do is change it from C drive in the program files folder to the D drive in the program files folder.

    @@alicepearce4597 Just moving the program files almost never works. On Windows 10 if you click the start button go to settings there's a apps option there with a list of the programs that are installed. To uninstall any one of them you should click it and then choose uninstall. To reinstall a program you either download it from a website or put a disc in and run the installer. One of the first options during the install wizard will be you where to install it. Most of the time of default will be the c drive and the program files folder. You literally just change C to D or whatever Drive letter your second Drive is.

    Good Day Michael. My boot drive is now a Samsung 500GB SSD. I bought a caddy much like the one in your video for my ASUS TP550LA to hold the old sata drive at 750GB for secondary storage and installed it in the optcal drive bay. The SSD is working fine as the boot drive with a fresh install of windows 10, but I cannot get the laptop to detect the old SATA drive in the optical drive bay. Cannot see it in the BIOS or in Disk Management in Windows. What could the problem be?

    What I would do in that case is take the hard drive outside of the optical drive bay and it's caddy and then put it back in. Basically just reseat everything. If it still doesn't work I would take the drive out and plug it into another computer to see if the drive is still functioning.

    You need to make sure you've installed Windows onto the SSD. It should work in either the caddy or in the regular spot for the drive. You might want to try putting the SSD where the other drive is and put the other drive in the caddy. Either way Windows has to be installed on the drive you want to boot to.

    I bought one of these caddies from eBay and the listing said it was for my laptop (HP6715b) = 12.7mm thickness. But the drive I inserted into it (already formatted) is not recognised in BIOS, Windows (XP, Vista & W7) nor disk management. I think the drive is not even receiving power as it doesn't spin up or get warm. They sent a replacement FOC, but that is just the same. So: buyer beware!! Just because the listing says it's for your computer, it *only* means it is the correct physical size. It might not actually work on your laptop!!!
