Upgrading my CPU to the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X (from the 2700X)

I've been looking forward to this upgrade for years, after finding a decent deal on eBay for an open-box CPU I finally went for it. I don't do a lot of gaming, but I do a lot of video editing and other CPU intensive tasks.

I've maxed out my AM4 platform (with parts I can get/afford). from 1700X to 5900X, from X370 to Crosshair VIII X570 Dark Hero, Team Xtreem 2x32GB & an RTX 4090. After AM5 is all-matured and there will be AM6, I will do the same again. This is the best way for me (to save the money), rather than being an early adopter. Unless you have financial freedom...

@@Lee-wh3ht your rig is fine, any extra horsepower your cpu has over the 3090 is used on your daily activities. I usually run a browser, steam, gog, epic store at the same time as a game so a good cpu is needed. I have a 3700X :D. I am not sure if you upgrade to a 4090 you will end up with a gpu bottleneck, so you might think saving the money for a new system (AM6 or intel) in 2 to 5 years time, instead. And, yes there are better cheaper options out there, but would you trade the good fun you had with your PC (ie not having a PC all this time) for waiting till today to get one because there are cheaper options today? I wouldn't, its good to pay a premium to start enjoying now ❤

I just edit in 1080p. Others might have some insight. I did have some issues with playback when I was editing from my fileserver, I bought a dedicated scratch SSD and that helped a ton. May look into playback settings too and have a CPU meter up when editing and see if the CPU could be the bottleneck

I use a artic freezer!! 280 on my 5900x and idle temps are around 30³C with ambiant 22³C. I did find your paste to be a bit on the sparse site. and off course having the rad to be with the hoses on the top gives a problem with air and thus much lesser cooling capacity. so maybe try to change that if possible, but seeing the 1080 being that large I think that might be a problem with the hoses. But a 5900x should definitely be running a lot cooler then you have it. R23 here was 22680 with my artic liquid freezer II 280 using the offset montage. so maybe that is something that might help.

First off, Thank you for making this video. I think you may have answered my questions in the video but I want to ask just so I have more clarity. I'm a video editor who needed an upgrade to handle 4K editing within DR18. I currently have a Ryzen 7 2700 processor with Wraith Spire LED Cooler. Motherboard is the ASUS Prime B450 -Plus. I upgraded from a GTX1660 to an RTX 3060 and went from 32 GB RAM to 64GB. But my Render times are taking 25% longer and I'm seeing the same lag when editing 4K and no proxies as I had with the old GPU and less RAM. I'm thinking the processor is the problem at this point. If I bump up to the Ryzen 9 5900x should that fix the bottlenecking and make everything much more speedy? Also, will I need a different motherboard to handle the new processor? Sorry for so many questions, I just don't know enough about builds (and don't totally understand it all lol) Thank you!

I would think the CPU would be the next thing to upgrade, the single core performance alone is way faster. I've never done any 4k editing so I can't specifically say this would fix everything. There are always settings that could be to blame, I sill have weird issues I haven't solved. I would post on Reddit or a computer forum and get a few opinions. they will know much more than I will. Best of luck!

It seems upgrading from a 2700X to a 5900X is popular - I did exactly that a couple months ago. It had been a while since I swapped the CPU of my main rig without touching the rest (last time was on Socket 7 - last century), but I still got quite a thrill out of making a 5 years old machine still competitive for the next 3-4 years with only a single component swap. To be fair, I had already upgraded the GPU (RX480 to RX6600XT) and added RAM (16 to 32), so it's not exactly the same machine, but still...

I think the AIO is having problems due to its positioning. I think it would be better if the radiator was upside down compared to its current position or the top of the case. This is because any air is now sucked to the pump but in the other positions any bubbles would stay in the radiator. I can't see if you can do either due to space constraints or hose length.

got at 5950x. not playing any AAA games at all. i ve set my CPU to 3.8 GHz @ 1.070V, its prime95 AVX2 enabled small ftt stable. For cinebench 23multicore i actualy gain 1k points to 25k compared to Stock using PBO defaults (as the stock power limit limits the 16 cores to around 3.7GHz for this usecase). For singlecore i lose ~300 down to 1300 points. But the thing doesnt boost irresponsible during light and medium workloads and saves around 30-60% watts, lots of temps and lots of noise as fans can stay pretty slow. The newest game i play is Fallout76 (with 1080TI, 1440p) and the difference is around the following: 3.8GHz, 1.07V: ~70 FPS 1% lows ~55 Watts CPU power draw vs 4.7 - 4.9 GHz PBO default (main thread, multiple other threads with around 4 GHz) ~ 85 FPS 1% lows ~ 125 Watts CPU power draw ~ hotter and noisier, but dont remember exactly main use case is software developement, software tests, compiling. and a little bit video editing (though less then even the occasional gaming). and for these. So for me personally I kind of dont see any difference between running PBO with up to 5 GHz single core, or 3.8GHz all core. but i do like low temps and almost zero noise, less energy waste and now that summer is coming, less heat

I'm running an Intel lga 1200, on a MSI ace gold edition motherboard. Everything was working just fine till one day I went to boot up and I got a C1 error code. I just got new ddr4 ram to see if thats the issue which would suck because I had 64gb of ram and now im having to downgrade to 32gb. If that doesn't work I purchased a new MSI MPG Z590 Gaming Carbon WiFi Gaming Motherboard... I'm running the 10th gen Intel chip and if this works I may just return the motherboard. Sell the Intel chip, and see if I can get a shop to fix the msi ace gold edition motherboard. Then I'll sell that for an AMD chip and amd mobo. I have a gigabyte rtx 4080 gpu and a 1000 watt asus Thor psu. I'm waiting on a new case but my Intel chip always feels like it's running hotter than usual. I cleaned it out and put new thermal paste and that's when I got the c1 error. After swapping to just 2 ram chips I got an error code that says cannot find boot drive. But my monitor won't turn on. I got a display port cable instead of the hdmi cable hoping that might fight my screen issue. It just sucks because I have 3 m.2 drives and I honestly cannot remember which drive has my windows loaded :/

I built a new PC in november 2021 and the specs are pretty comparable, 5800x, 32GB DD4 3600mhz, GTX 1070 (moved from old system). It's going to make a massive difference with encoding videos and just general productivity tasks. If you're more into gaming I'd recommend the x3D CPUs, but for general purpose you can't really go wrong with a 5900x. There are some general pieces of advice I can give you: 1) Never clean a PC with an air compressor. Atmospheric air contains a lot of moisture, when compressing that turns into water and gets mixed with oil and gets shot out all over the electronic parts of your pc. Next to that it generates a bunch of static electricity and you might spin the fans a bunch which can blow up the speed controllers on the motherboard. 2) Your CPU radiator is upside down. Since the tubes are now above the cpu pump, it means that you will pool airbubbles inside your cpu pump and in the tubes connecting to the radiator. You want the entrance/exit tubes on the bottom end so that the highest part of the loop is the reservoir (end piece) inside the radiator. 3) These CPUs run incredibly hot but as long as you stay below like 90 oC it should be fine

Like I said in the video I'm not really into gaming and most of the games I do play would be fine with a much older / slower CPU. The upgrade was for productivity work and cut some of my render times in half. It will also handle video with higher resolution / bitrate once I make some upgrades in that area. 1. I've used air compressors to blow the dust from PC's for over 20 years, not just at home but at work. Static electricity is more of an issue with vacuums, I've never had a single issue there. While it probably does introduce some moisture I'd say it's negligible. In arcade machine repair I've scrubbed motherboards with 409, rinsed with tap water, used an air compressor to get most of the water out then set them in the sun to dry. If there is an issue with the air compressor it can have more water in the system, this one seems fine. Also in the video I'm using my other hand to hold the fan blades in place while cleaning them, I know better than to blast them to insane RPMs. 2. The radiator placement is somewhat sub-optimal but not really an issue here. I only have issues when I move the case around and the air is disturbed. Besides that I basically never have any pump whine or gurgling noises. The air is trapped in the top of the rad, which is the highest point in the loop. I don't really have a better option with this case / GPU combination. If I flipped the tubes to the bottom I'd be more worried about the tubes pulling down on the GPU and having tighter bends which is not recommended for the type of hoses used in this AIO. 3. The temps are fine for this CPU, I guess I'm just used to running old Xeon CPUs. Even after overclocking the snot out of them they always ran cool compared to these new Ryzen chips. I may look in to undervolting the CPU or adjusting other settings which could help. But all in all it's fine.

AIO coolers are problematic. One reason why you're having problems with air in the system is the fact that the connections between the pump and the radiator are at the top of the radiator. If they were at the bottom, the air, which is lighter than the liquid, rises to the top of the radiator. Flipping the radiator would minimize the problem. It just looks like your GPU is in the way preventing you from doing that. There are fan coolers that are just as good as that AIO on the market today for less than an AIO.

From what I can see your cooler is sucking hot air from your rad and pulling it into your system and you only seem to have one fan in the rear for exhausts. That's why your running those temps. My 5900x clocked @ 4.4 on all cores doesn't even hit 65c at full load (video editing) with my Thermaltake 240. You need a bigger case. 🙂

That's been debunked many times, a radiator can be used as an intake without causing issues. There are two additional exhaust fans at the top of the case as well. I can go 4.8GHz at 1.315V but that is too much and I get into the 70C range. It may be safe, but I like to be safer. When you game, you go back in the bios and just go default and use the Ryzen Master to OC a couple of cores and there I get 4.94GHz.

For your AIO cooler radiator, it's important to put the hoses at the bottom if installed vertically, if not it will damage the pump from running it dry or worse, allowing an expensive cpu to overheat, if the hoses are at the top while vertically mounted, it creates an air pocket if and when coolant levels are low due to long term dissipation. 🤝💯
