Upgrading 4.6 DOHC Cams - Supporting Mods to Protect Your 4V Cobra, Mach 1, or Marauder Engine!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Upgrading cams on your 4.6 DOHC engine isn't the easiest. But often overlooked are the supporting mods required to protect your 4V engine. Supporting mods include upgrading the valve springs, valve retainers, pivot pins, secondary chains, and adding adjustable billet timing gears along with the Cobra Engineering secondary chain fix to tie it all together.

G'day Mike Tim from Australia. Just did a timing kit, lash adjusters and oil pump on my 5.4 260 Boss engine (dohc). Used the Accufab secondary chains as the stock ones were failing. I advanced the cam timing to 108 in and 112 ex with 110 lsa. Engine has greatly improved low end response as well as more top end. Great video mate!!

Thanks for the reply. The engine has crow Performance cams that are the largest that will fit in the 260 without modifying the cam journal bridges. They are supposed to be 202 @50 but measure up at 220 @50 with 435" lift. Also have fitted a twin 60mm front mounted throttle body on a custom plenum.

Hello there. Love your videos. Lots of good information. I'm building a 99 cobra engine with a eaton swap. I'm pretty sure the 99 has the same cams as the 01 you are using. My question is did you actually pick up the power you where estimating by advancing your intake cam and retarding your exhaust cam? And how is the driveability of the vehicle and idle quality? Thanks for your time

Hi Brian, thanks for watching and great question. I actually did pick up power in the midrange where I expected. Before I tuned the car, I had the bypass open on the Eaton. Even with slightly lower compression I felt more midrange torque. I probably lost 5 hp at the peak but picked up 30 hp in the midrange. Thanks for watching!

@@mattsgarage6385 Technically you can use stock springs for .425 lift and they will not bind. Also since you will not use boost it was have enough seat pressure which is 65 pounds. RPM wise the springs start to float at 7400 rpms. So on paper yes it will work if you shift at 6800 max with .425 lift. In real life a few guys have broken stock springs with .425 lift cams on the SVE forums. It is up to you and how hard you will run it (don’t miss a gear)…. Upgrading the pivot pins is a must with a higher lift cam if you have an aluminum block.

I reached out to James at Cobra Engineering and John Mihovetzat Accufab Racing. They both said upgrading the pins s only needed if you use higher lift cams, stiffer valve springs, or you are using a 2 step / wot box. Otherwise you are fine.

@@sSkillaz336 Yes. The only thing to be careful of is the steel piston stop. Even if you are careful it may scratch the piston. Had that happen on cylinder one and I was very careful and had a dab of oil on the end of it. The mark is about .005 deep by visual which is only cosmetic as the piston crown is .230 thick. Rechecked the timing wheel halfway through the timing procedure with cylinder 6 and this time used a piece of duct tape to wrap the end. No issue that time.

Thank you for watching. You are correct, the Aviator, Marauder, Mach 1, and 03/04 Cobra have the same cams with 184 degrees of duration on the intake and 196 exhaust. The 96-98 and 99-01 Cobra share the same exhaust cam as the others listed above, but the intake cams are different. The 96-98 have a split duration intake with a duration of 204 degrees. The 99-01 Cobra have a single duration of 200 degrees. This has been measured and confirmed by Todd Warren. www.svtperformance.com/threads/origional-camshaft-specs.604720/
