Cobra timing gear and cam install - Cobra Tech Talk #2
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this video I show you how to install the cams, oil pump, chain guides, chains, and all 4 tensioners. As well as tear down and assembly of the tensioners.
I added the documents used in this to the website - www.cobraengineering.net/cobra...

Great video! Nice to see it all done step by step. I’m enjoying all your videos.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, I have Gen3R with a VMP intercooler and will be buying your 1” water manifold sold through VMP
Very interesting. I know there is a lot I can learn from you.Looking forward to cam degree video. I have some SHM n/a cam regrinds I want to install on my 4v.
Great info as always James.

I was thinking of you Mike while I watched this. Especially what you said about the slack on the secondary passenger side that the cobra engineering piece corrects.
Good stuff 💯🤙🏻
Very good
Awesome video I'm about to reassemble a 97 cobra engine.. a few questions: - can I reuse any of my timing components? Guides/chains/tensioners? -Can I reuse my cam bolts and tray hardware? -Do I need a special tool to torque the cam bolts that holds the sprockets? -An lastly I had my oil cooler cleaned at the machine shop.. do I need new gaskets or take it apart to clean any further? Thanks an sorry for all the questions!

You can reuse the guides and tensioners. But I would get new chains. You can reuse the hardware. But again I would get the ARP cam bolts. The special tool helps but a short 3/8 ratchet extension will fit in the back of the cams to hold them. It's a good idea to replace the o rings in the oil cooler. It's a known problem with them.

@@cobraengineeringmore question.. is it okay lay in the lash adjusters, followers and bolt down the cams on top of them? Or should I torque the cams and finagle the followers under them after? I don’t have that $200 tool and I’ve heard the screwdriver method is bad

@@jmitchell513 I’ve never tried that. But I can’t see how it would hurt anything. Just not sure if it’s even possible.
In one of your other comments, you noted that if you are not at the limits of your setup cams are not the best value. On a 2.3 VMP (2.6 pulley) E-85 car, would porting the heads be worth it without cams? I might have a head tick might be an exhaust leak but replacing the old 2 piece long tubes this winter. So I was looking at replacing the heads with 9 thread heads (if I have the head tick) and thought porting would lower the restriction on the engine. Is porting a waste of money since I’m not doing cams? My car is a street car and will spend 5,000 miles each year on the street.

It’s mostly a money thing. Yes porting will have gains. And cams will have a gain. But so does a pulley change. If money is no object I would go with porting first then cams.

@@cobraengineering thanks for the advice and great videos!
Working on bleeding my lash adjusters now. How do you feel on that topic?

If they’re used use a vise to compress the old oil out. Then soak in oil overnight.
Have aftermarket cams ever been installed and degreed with engine still in the engine bay?

I can’t think of a reason why you couldn’t. But removing the valve covers in the car is a major pain in the ass. I did it once and wished I wouldn’t have bothered. It was no fun.
