Upgrade Your Razor Quad: Adding a 40-volt Ryobi battery, Foot Brake, Reverse, and Speed Limiter
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
A list of upgrades I've done and brief descriptions of how to do them. Including reverse, speed limiter, foot brake and 40 volt battery conversion.
Parts I used
40v Ryobi battery adapter: amzn.to/3lwoRuE
Throttle pedal: amzn.to/3r03GCl - Check eBay I think I paid closer to $60
36V Controller and Throttle: www.ebay.com/itm/36v-1000watt... - Make sure this is the right one for your application.

I solved the issue with the Ryobi 40v bms shutting off by putting two identical 40v batteries in parallel. That fixed it.

I never thanked you for this bit of information. After you told me this I used two 40 volt batteries in parallel on the MX650 and it worked great. I ended up making a video on that build too.
Did this upgrade to my grandsons quad. I use a 36 volt 20ah lithium battery for a e-bike and it runs forever plus the power is almost doubled. He loves it, charge it at night then run it all day.
Fantastic upgrade. I am actually looking to do the same on some scooters. I have a few already modified to run on 2 Ryobi 18V batteries in series. I designed and 3d printed my own battery caps. I then ordered the correct tabs and soldered up the replacement harness. All my Ryobi batteries (40V and 18V) are now charged in my shed which has solar input so it is free! So lithium batteries have to be balanced when charged unlike the NiCd batteries we grew up with in our remote controlled cars. The balancing is controlled by a battery management system (BMS). The BMS also helps regulate the amperage draw on the batteries in order to protect the pack. The newer 40V BMS is more advanced than the older ones. I don't like them because if they ever get severely discharged or get wet you cannot charge them ever again unless you tear them down and replace the BMS. I have not found an aftermarket BMS for these. My next step is to get a battery welder and order my own BMSs so I can build my own battery packs for toys. If you have any questions about lithium battery packs or need something 3D printed let me know. That $27 clip prob cost $3 in wire and connectors and 90 cents in filament to print.
Thanks man the throttle/brake mod is amazing
Did you need low voltage cutoff switch to prevent battery from over discharging?
Can you make a video driving the quad?
Can you share the link or details for adding a reverse? Thanks for this helpful video

That would require a new controller with reverse and throttle. It also depends on which model you have. The link below will have everything you need. I'd contact him so he can help you find the right parts. www.ebay.com/str/overvoltedscooters
Can you send a pic or video on how you mounted the battery and where? What did you make the base out of? Thanks

Here is an image of how it's mounted. It's at 45 degrees so it can slide out easily. imgur.com/a/MmRvZNj

Thanks for the video! Do you think that I could get away with just replacing the stock battery with a 40v and leaving everything else stock?? I was thinking about trying a Kobalt battery. Thank you!

I ran mine on the 40 volt battery with stock controller for a little while. My boy was just learning to ride at the time so he wasn't hard on it. But it worked fine.

@@showandtelltechnology thanks Chris. My sons been riding for a year and will probably push it as hard as he can. Am I risking damaging the quad with the larger battery??
@showandtelltechnology
3 жыл бұрын
@@nickcosentino9476 there's a possibility of frying the controller. I've seen KZread videos of people putting 40 volt batteries into 12 volt power wheels. It goes like hell for a short period and then the controller fries and it stops working. You'd be taking that risk. But if you're thinking about upgrading those anyway it might not hurt to try it.

@@showandtelltechnology thanks for the advice. My current factory battery died and this would be a perfect fix. I’ll replace the battery and see what happens
Does the controller make the switch a reverse or how does that work
@showandtelltechnology

Yes it does as long as you buy the controller with reverse.

I don't think so. I've never had any battery issues.
What was the run time? Thanks

I have the 4 amp hour 40 volt batteries and I'd say they last about 30 minutes each. With three batteries and two chargers I can pretty much keep it going all day.
Is the dial called a potentiometer? Also, how did you fit 2 40v? Thanks
@showandtelltechnology
4 ай бұрын
I only fit one 40v battery on the quad. I put two in the MX650 dirtbikes. I don't know what the dial is called. I bought it from the guy who makes the controller and I don't recall a word like that.
Hi how much Ah is the 40v supposed to have ?

@@showandtelltechnology is there a battery so the kids don’t have the issue you described? If not would u send the link for that switch thing and is that difficult to do? I know nothing about this stuff
Is the run time longer on it?
@showandtelltechnology

The run time is about the same but the speed is faster. When it goes dead you just switch it out for a new one which takes just a couple seconds.
Where do I find the reverse link?
@showandtelltechnology

The reverse is built into the controller. I bought my controller on ebay from this guy (www.ebay.com/str/overvoltedscooters). When you buy it specify that you want the reverse functionality.

Unfortunately there is no video. I don't have this quad anymore. My son out grew it. It wasn't complicated to do though. You just need to mount the pedal properly to avoid the frame.
How did u install the reverse?
@showandtelltechnology
2 жыл бұрын
It's a add on with the controller. If you pay like $20 more he just adds it and you don't have to do anything. It makes the on off switch into forward and reverse.

This quads speed control can handle 36 volts no problem all 24 volt razor models can handle 36 volt without issues.
@alainl.pinero1307

so, you mean if you another 12v battery they can handle it without making any other changes
If you run two of those in parallel, meaning voltage stays at 40v but MAH doubles, you shouldn't have the shutting down issue.

Yes I learned that as well. I'm running 2 40 volts in parallel in my mx650s. There is a video of that on here too.
