Unique Solar and Lithium Battery Setup RV Tour and Documentary

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Learn how this full-time RV couple uses their solar panels and lithium battery bank to melt metal with the sun and other unbelievable upgrades that allow them to go 3 months at a time without dumping their black tank. Mark and Elizabeth live full time in their Grand Design 390rk, and they brought their unique hobbies with them on their off-grid adventures! You won’t want to miss Mark’s ingenious way to extend his solar panel capacity after maxing out his roof space (we might do this to our rig too!) This tour and documentary includes tips for full-time RV living, whether you are an RV newbie, an experienced RVer who is new to solar, or a boondocking pro looking to up your game.
Hi, we are Joshua and Elizabeth, full-time Boondocking RVers, and we’re on a journey to weave together our desire to be more self-sufficient like our pioneer ancestors, with our love of modern technology, building our online businesses, all while living off grid. Join us as we explore ways to bring together these 2 seemingly opposing goals through creativity and just taking that first step towards our goal, even if we don’t have the whole journey mapped out yet. We know where we want to go, we just need to figure out how to get there! Please hit that subscribe button and the bell so you can get notifications on new videos.

For the selling all the 'stuff' in the house, what I did was hire an Estate Sale (more commonly used by relatives after a family member has passed) company. They came over, explained everything and agreed on a percentage and 2 sale days. Then they showed up on a Friday, walked through and priced everything. They had advertised the sale and had a few 'regulars' that came by and bought/reserved items in advance (even the Estate Sale owner bought a couple things lol), had a sale Saturday and Sunday, then Sunday night everything was gone. Got a check on Monday. A bit traumatic experience going from everything to (practically) nothing but, like ripping off a bandaide, within a couple days the FREEDOM I felt was AMAZING.

You wanted to hear about other people's installations.... so here is mine: I have a 39' Landmark 5th wheel. It has a 50amp service. I purchased this RV to park up at my property where I spend much of the Spring/Summer/Fall. I still work full-time so I need to have access to a reliable internet source. For this reason I purchased a 10-acre parcel up in the mountains of Utah near Strawberry Reservoir. There is a cell tower 1700 feet from my property... which means I get super-fantastic internet speeds anywhere in my property.... OK... now to the fun stuff: I have a Growatt 5k 48v inverter tied to 15,465 whr 48v battery bank with 8 455watt bi-facial panels. The Growatt 5k inverter is tied to an external transformer which takes the 240vAC output of the Growatt to 2-120vAC legs.... similar to what a split-phase inverter does EXCEPT with the added benefit of allowing 5kw being drawn from each leg. As you know, a Spit-phase inverter allows only (assuming a 5kw inverter is being used) 2500 watts on each leg. The Growatt does not have this limitation. The end result is that I can run every AC component in my Landmark with no issues. I haven't connected a welder to it, but I suspect that I could use a small welder anyway. Since I have the RV parked and it is not moving anywhere I have the 8 solar panels in a wooden frame that is permanently mounted on the ground. EAch panel is 80" x 40" so you can imagine the size of the structure. Since the panels are BIFACIAL I have white rock below the panel structure which allows light to reflect from the rocks to the underside of the panels, giving me a 10-15% additional wattage. Net result: 8 x 455 watts = 3640watts + 15% = 4186 watts. The Growatt inverter passes all this juice into my RV without the need of using my 15,465whr battery bank... and then when the sun goes down I don't need the AC, but I do run a fan and my C-Pap machine all night long, in addition to watching TV when we want to. Just thought I'd share.

Love all the info! We're ready to retire and are working on understanding all we need to get DONE before transitioning to renting out our house and moving into a RV similar to yours. Solar is very important to us, but we don't yet understand enough lingo. Feedback on video - We love how well done your video editing is and the music. However, when the camera bounces we both got motion sick, but we figure you'll figure this part out as y'all are so talented. Another thing is when the music plays over someone talking, we both had problems understanding what was said, or when you were talking near background noise. Keep up the good work though! We've subscribed and look forward to learning more from you and others. Thanks for taking the time and effort to share what you've learned.

Wow! Some truly amazing mods to your rig! (from the two tour videos) I have a question about getting started with solar. Towards the end of the second “tour”, Harrison mentioned the first thing to do is “create a baseline” to evaluate current and future requirements by using a battery monitoring device. I’ve been looking at the Victron Smart Shunt for starters, just to measure current usage. Any thoughts there? Would that work to provide the baseline I’m looking for?

Remember, Ohms law says that if you raise the voltage, you don't have to carry as many amps. This means that moving from 12v to 48v means that you can drop the size of the wire thereby the cost of the installation.

@@KennethLongcrier I've chatted with many high power users who simply refuse to abandon 12v for anything higher. I did, and it's so much easier to work with. Simple 48->12 converter back for the coach's needs and you're in business. Combiner boxes and big wire for solar? Nope, not me. One single 2-conductor cable does the job in series.

I would bet if you added some servo motors to lift your panels, and a sensor to maintain the proper angle toward the sun , you could really optimize your installation. This would really work in the higher latitudes like Minnesota and North Dakota.

Good tour but would be suggest less or shorter explanations from both of you. Allow the guests to do the majority of the talking.

The content of your video is great, but I have to tell you it's so distracting when you interrupt the guy your interviewing and add your own comments. This disrupts his thought process and the flow of the story he is telling. If you want to add your own comments, save them for another video and let him talk. I watch a lot of videos on youtube and I found it very hard to watch this. Cheers.

I gotta tell you, for someone who does KZread for a living, your sound really sucked on this video. Have you listened to yourself? When you have someone mic-ed and you are not close to the person it is very difficult to hear you. I know what you are saying is probably important, but if the audience can't hear you then what's the point?. If you're going to talk when someone else is mic-ed then PLEASE stand close to the person who is mic-ed. I'm not sure I am willing to see any more videos you've done if you haven't done some simple audio adjustments. I was going to subscribe but not now.

We had a mic fail during the shoot and have since add new sound equipment. Thanks for your comment and support.
