That was a great match, and a great storyline. Taking a real-life tragedy with less than a month out from the match and building a storyline around it. I’m sure Paul Bearer would have loved it.
It pains me how much people say things without finding out if it's true or not. But NOW we heard it from the man himself. He doesn't hate CM Punk. The vibe I get from that response is that Undertaker has the same amount of respect he shows for all his fellow wrestlers. It's unlikely that Undertaker has heat with anyone, unless they have really pissed him off, and even in most cases he gets over it. Like the time that Hogan told everyone that Undertaker hurt Hogan's neck with the Tombstone Piledriver and his head didn't even hit the chair (let alone the floor). EVEN THEN, Undertaker forgave Hogan for that little stunt. Personally, I thought that Undertaker VS CM Punk was a great match.

Mark Calaway took what should have been a career destroying gimmick and made it cool. He was like Sting. When he realized the cartoony, supernatural stuff was passe, he figured out how to reinvent himself. The guy came out in sweats for a promo and was still cool. And unlike all the politicians, he did what was right for business. Wins and losses mattered far less than the story and the match. No one else could have been that character and gotten over long term. He’s truly one of the greats.

Dude, The Undertaker character was never meant to be "cartoony" from the jump. It is literally one of the more protected gimmicks in the business. I've watched him from the literal beginning of the WWF/E career and at no point was his gimmick ever presented in a "joke" or "cartoon" like manner. Even with the "Supernatural" stuff, it was always presented as if it were a horror movie style deal, not hokey or overblown.

I'd disagree that the gimmick was a potential career killer. In fact it went against the tide of the cartoonish characters of the time and gave it some legitimacy and coolness in an era where the WWF/F was struggling creatively in the years between the steroid scandal and the emergence of the Attitude Era. Everything else is spot on though, nobody else could have made the character relevant for so long.

So many people still speak highly of working with him. Rock, Cena, Taker, Sting, Darby Allin, Bret Hart (who rarely talks highly of anyone), FTR, John Morrison, Rey Mysterio, Batista (who’s literally best friends with the guy despite being close with Triple H so that shows too that he doesn’t care who you’re friends with, he’ll still be friends with you despite not liking some other people you hang around, same with Danhausen and Adam Cole who are friends with The Elite, hasn’t stopped him from being friends with them!). Punk is someone with a good heart and is passionate about wrestling, but he doesn't take shit from anyone who is the shits and will not fall in line if it goes against what his ideals are. Some people rather others just shut up to not cause any trouble even if they're on a sinking ship. Of course, this hardcore personality backfires, but it is needed to make good changes. Taker himself, like punk, is really good hearted about what he does, but he too can sometimes get caught up in his own ideals. Moral of the story is that some people don't like putting on an act and will try to make things better, like normal adults do even if their not always right, and you need to cause a bit of harm to do some good.

I always get the feeling when listening to Mark that he appreciates the miracle of the odds against being successful in the wrestling business and how he was lucky enough to beat them and build a career and life. Therefore I just don't see him attempting to derail anyone or let ego get in the way of another man's livelihood and dreams. He is a good man and a stand up man and he has paid back his good fortune with hard work and dedication and by giving an example to everyone else who he came across 👍💯 A true G!

Taker doesn’t lie so if this is what he says, this is how it is.
CM Punk haters going to lengths trying to rally around their little narratives and orchestrate obscure examples of him "being hard to work with" and having "no friends" in the industry. Glad you have pivotal figures such as Stone Cold, Bret Hart, Mick Foley, Roddy Piper and Shawn Michaels voice out their support for him numerous times in the past. Most ppl on average, at the height of the media scrum drama, have just come across a couple of videos such as RVD calling him somewhat of a "wannabe locker room leader" or Seth Rollins, later calling him a "cancer'" while simultaneously also claiming "he's helped him a lot with his career." While many enjoy embracing the idea of him burying AEW and not being wanted there - the mere existence of written and visual proof exists on the internet of wrestlers coming to his aid recently and sharing several nice, mellow stories about him. These include: FTR Dax and Cash, Danhausen, Mark Henry, Ricky Starks, Jade Cargill, Adam Cole etc. Even other influential backstage figures notably Teddy Long, Vince Russo, Jim Cornette. Heck, even Chris Jericho around a month ago tweeted "I always loved working with CM Punk." That being said, Punk does have beef with few selected ppl. However stating that he's had problems everywhere he's worked is pushing too far. He's literally an ROH Hall of Famer.
So glad we are getting so much interviews from taker .

Whats funny is sooooo many people misunderstood a lot of what Punk said on that Colt Cabanna podcast back in 2014. When he talked about the mania match it was to do with whats the next after that match and his frustration with a lack of a long term plan. Its like the whole "make Roman look strong" it wasnt a knock or dig at Roman, he was voicing frustration with the agents ect constantly telling him that when he knew what needed to be done, even suggested putting the shield over to make them look real strong. Instead fans used that to shit on Roman when he was being pushed hard as the top face.
Gotta love Taker
It just must be me of late, but I'd say that The Undertaker has been one talkative SOB! He's been on podcasts, making public appearances, etc. Just as busy outside the wrestling ring as he was in it! That's good. I think I would have went and wet a fishing line somewhere for a while myself.

Undertaker thinks that it should’ve been Roman Reigns who ended the streak, but I and probably everyone else thinks that it should’ve instead been CM Punk as for one, that was Undertaker’s last actual good Wrestlemania match from an objective standpoint, which would’ve been a perfect time to end the streak as it ends on a high note as opposed to how it ended with Brock Lesnar in a crummy match where Undertaker was legitimately hurt in, but also it gives CM Punk his heat back after he lost to The Rock who ended his 300+ day streak with the WWE championship, and actually establishes him as a main event, top guy, he earned and from this it more than likely keeps him in WWE as their top heel, who can then be thwarted by a red hot baby face people are actually behind, whether that be Seth Rollins or Roman Reigns if they didn’t fuck over either of their booking, especially Roman Reign’s booking, who in feuding with a heel CM Punk that ended the streak could’ve made a star out of them, and do actual business that doesn’t run off 70% of your audience. I like how in this video that Mark throws shade at the internet who don’t know shit, and yes for a majority of it that’s entirely valid and true, but here I am, some guy on KZread, who just booked WWE better for the next several years than WWE/the stupid fuck writers could ever possibly fathom in thinking up. That goes to show how bad booking has gotten in WWE over the past decade where nobodies like me on the internet that never even been to a live wrestling show, or met a wrestler face to face, can book far superior than those in the business can, who really should’ve never been allowed into the business as like Vince Russo, the guy who set the precedent of dumb fuck writers getting into wrestling, they don’t know shit about wrestling, never cared to learn about wrestling, and instead turned it into a garbage soap opera that brought the business to its lowest point in its entire long history.
People don't remember their first feud some years earlier from there WM match. Both weren't in great shape back then. They had a lot of casket matches around the loop.
😊 our Undertaker is always be wwe guy forever
The legend himself
I'd love to see the "brothers of destruction" review aew dynamite, now that would be fun
Punk should have kept his record breaking WWE title reign until Mania when he faced Taker. Title Vs Streak. That should have been the main event. Rock Vs Cena should have really bean once in a lifetime with Cena going over. Then they should have had different opponents at Wrestlemania 29. Like Rock Vs Triple H.

@@man-soekchoi6527 I do get that. Personally I thought Cena should have been turned heel back then. I think he would have gone over so well as a heel that eventually people would cheer for him and then he could have become a face again. But I don't think WWE turned him heel because he was so loved by kids and sold so much merchandise. It was the older crowd that booed him.

@@GameTime-yj6qv Ya I do agree big time that at the night of at Raw after Wrestlemania 28 it was a perfect chance for him to turn heel but too bad he had too much kiddie fans, it would totally break their hearts if their beloved hero turned heel that way but then I think if Hogan could’ve done it why can’t they do it with Cena. I also agree too that if he turned heel for a bit then the fans might just start to cheer for him and he can re-vert back to face once more since The Rock himself was in that same exact predicament of getting booed as face then turning heel to become one of the biggest faces of all time man

Well there's a couple problems with this. 1. Taker didn't want to be the title picture ever again. 2 Triple H was already in a heated Feud with Brock 3. Once in a lifetime was never supposed to be once in a lifetime though that was just the marketing (Rock later stated that he was confused by it himself since he had signed up for 2 matches) the problem was that Cena's character didn't change at all from his "greatest defeat" and he just kept main eventing and winning
*Not a huge Punk fan but that match was the best match on the entire WrestleMania card & is definitely in the top 5 of Undertaker's Streak era matches.*

I think people mentioned the Taker/Punk beef was around their HIAC match around him not wearing a suit or something.
I think with Taker, he would be professional regardless of his like or dislike of the other person. Online rumors are just that rumors, no truth behind them.
Loved that match.
This is why I see Punk making a comeback to WWE. If their top workhorse is speaking on him knowing he doesn’t have to talk about him, it shows his name is still somewhat big over there.
The only story I remember about backstage stuff between Taker and Punk was WWE implemented a dress code backstage and Punk wasnt following it so Taker, as locker room leader, pulled him aside and told him he needed to follow the dress code like everyone else does. How that ended I dont remember but I do remember that.

I think when Phil said on the Cabana podcast that he wrestled the match with Taker with the biggest chip on his shoulder, he probably meant with his reactions after moves and his character work. To compromise another performers safety would literally go against every single thing CM Punk stands for, which is the most ironic thing about those rumors.

It's funny to me how this narrative about how Punk is absolutely "hated" within the industry and yet when you sit down and actually talk to people its like "Oh yea, he's great. He's never done anything bad to me. It was always all business". If anything, the fact that Punk isn't with the shits rubs people who are the wrong way, so this false narrative of "he's hard to work with" gets rehashed.

I wouldn't say Punk is necessarily hated. But he definitely has a reputation and a bit of a notoriety. For every good thing said about Punk, there's just as many negative things said about him. I just don't think the guy has great social skills, people skills, and communication skills for the career he is in. That whole rebellious, wannabe edgelord, "march to the beat of my own drumb", "Not Taking Shit From Anyone" mentality is fine when you're a teen or still trying to figure out who you are. But when it comes time to grow up and join the real world, it doesn't carry over into the adult world. And I think Punk spent so many years touting about how much a rebel he thinks he is and how much he thinks he goes against the grain, that it has stunted his social skills and communication skills.

@DeadmanInc336 if you look at the people who have negative things to say about him, it's always people who are known for their backstage political fuckery and couldn't get him to go along with their game. If you notice all the people who have glowing things to say about him, it's always the people who were there to work and not be on fuckery time shit. He's never been called unsafe in the ring, difficult to work with in the ring. His MO has always been the same. Respect mine, I'll respect yours. You go out of your way to be disrespectful toward me, I'll treat you the same way and burn your world down. He's a person who obviously loves what he does but not to the point where he'll place advancement over integrity and being someone he's not. If you're someone who is known for fuckery, why would you want to engage him much less earn his ire?

All people who have said less than desirable things to say about their experience with Punk in the past. Sorry, dude. Not everyone has an agenda or is part of a huge conspiracy trying to hold Punk down, my guy. 🤷 But I have been debating this with Punk apologists and sympathizers about this since Brawl Out so I am sure you're going to have an excuse for each example I just gave. I just don't think the guy has the mentality or temperament for professional wrestling and it's evident it isn't the best thing for his mental health. I sorta now understand why he was laughed out of the locker room by Cody, Booker, and Jericho when he tried to assert himself as locker room leader. He has his own strain of Ultimate Warrior Syndrome.

@@FreePlayMode the thing about Punk is he has immaturity issues. He is very much like Mark David Chapman: needs acknowledgement from others, needs to feel himself more special than others, and expected greatness to just be dropped onto his lap. And when it doesn't happen, he has to essentially force others into acknowledging him by being an insufferable pain in the ass. I understand he had a very difficult and traumatic childhood. But it's clear his maturity is very much stunted as a result of it. People like this are immature and as a result, have no clue how the real world works. If you like Punk or are a fan of his, that's totally fine. Nobody is saying you can't be a fan of the guy or like him. But I think it's time we stop enabling his lifelong Persecution Complex and start acknowledging his cons along with his pros.
Going into that wrestlemania I thought for sure that would be the year the streak ended. 20-0 had already been achieved, and CM Punk had just taken a big L against the Rock, the best way to get him back in the hunt would have been to have him do the impossible and beat the streak.
The internet made up the conflict, it was based on what punk said, which wasn’t bad. He said he was so burnt out at that time. That he was spaced out towards that match, it wasn’t a dig at taker. He just said he was tired and wish he was at home with his wife.instead at mania. He then took time off after the taker match.

Just take a look at who has beef with punk and who is cool with him. Tells you everything.
Yes it also was the best match on the card that night and yes punk should have gotten paid like he went on last . He deserved it .
I don't doubt they were good to each other. I think Punk just didn't want to fight him on Mania because like they said, Punk was red hot at the moment and he should have been the main event/championship match instead of fighting UT. The problem of a Punk vs Taker match is that it was not doing anything for either of them.
