@@richdude8150 yes, but that’s a given. Like everyone else, I thought Steph was holding back heyman all these years. But he seems to be his own worst enemy at times. Remember the bubba ray story when Paul told him to wait for a fedex from him; bubba asked him what the tracking number was, Paul gave it to him, bubba called back saying the number didn’t work and Paul said something to the effect of add two more zero’s to the tracking number.

How else do you think he got guys to dive through tables on concrete and mutilate themselves in ECW without even a guarantee they would be paid at all? I can listen to Paul talk without end. I know he's screwing with the audience but it's just so much fun that it doesn't matter and the slightest little bit of "not knowing for sure" is 100% what Kayfabe use to be all about. One of the best workers in the business.

There was gravitas and stakes in matches. It can still be done today and it is done today but not as much. Anyway, good point.

Eh, everyone knew they both respected each other. If he did spoke that way about Brock’s match with orton or cena, that would make so much more sense.

Heyman is just GOLD on the Mic. The dude could talk for hours about Paint Drying and people will hang on every word listening to every second. The guy is just Legendary....

This was all recorded before the Undertaker retired and gave a billion interviews.

Of course, the big hole in the theory is the fact that they had a 21-1 graphic ready. But Heyman is a great actor.

Paul Heyman is one of the best crowd workers in the business. We're all mesmerized by him essentially saying "sure would be interesting, huh" and giving no definitive answer.

Taker didn’t even try to kick out and the ref literally said “ring the bell it’s over.” Likely had no music to sell the moment. This couldn’t have been more planned.

Paul Heyman is an evil genius.

Stuff like this illustrates what being great on the mike and cutting a promo is all about.

And if you look it up, The Undertaker claims in an interview after he retired if I remember correctly. That he knew Brock was going to win, but he (Undertaker) didn’t believe that Brock needed it to boost his (Brock) career. Since Brock already had already made a name for himself (Brock). And then Cena pretty much confirmed it while during an interview himself. Mentioned that the reason he lost to Brock after breaking the streak. Was to give Brock validation for beating the streak.

Heyman loves to tease and toy with the audience, but the truth is it was all planned out and the 4 of them (Heyman, Lesnar, Undertaker, McMahon) were all very well aware that it was ending. They should've kept the streak unbeaten. That would've been the right move for Undertaker's legend and his legacy. However... that's not Vince McMahon's style. He always knew the streak would eventually have to be broken. He just never found the right time or the right person to do it. But by the time the streak ended, it was too big and too legendary to ever be acceptably broken by any one person. That's why it was a terrible decision.

Doesn't explain the 22-1 graphic that was on all the screens in the arena cued up. This is purely BS.

And Paul Heyman wouldn’t be responsible but he’s needed for Brock’s character. It’s a believable story but only the Graphics of 21-1 or Undertaker not fighting back a bit are the only holes in the story.

Definitely a supreme Professional. I love this guy, God bless him 🙏🏼. He's so good I don't even have to post it here, he speaks for himself. His voice and the way he presents himself makes people want to hear what he has to say. Definitely top three. Good old J.r., The King Jerry Lawler of course a comedian lol, and this Gentleman Paul Heyman.

I just went back and watched the ending of the match because he got me curious. Heyman is f'ing with everyone. He's so good though. Absolute genius.

Definitely fucking with us. Michael Cole didn’t hesitate to announce the Streak was over the nanosecond the ref hit three. The ready-to-go graphic said 21-1; not 22-0. Vince could fire anyone he wanted and have Heyman spin it on Raw as, “He came, he saw, he conquered, he’s home with his feet up drinking beer and savoring his victory. No need to come back…. cuz his job is done. Ref likely saw Mark’s condition and signaled for them to go home earlier than planned because continuing would’ve been disastrous for Mark’s health and well-being. Heyman is likely letting us in on a private conversation Brock had with him when he first found out about the match….. and maybe the original finish WAS for Taker to go over….. and maybe Brock convinced Vince it was time to end it.

I have to be honest, I was one of those people who really looked down on pro-wrestling. I always loved it as a kid but when I got to my late teens, I just sort of phased out of it. That was about twenty years ago. This year I started watching again. I’m not even sure how or why. But, I think I get it, and I certainly appreciate it far more than I did throughout my twenties and early thirties. It used to be real to me when I was a kid. But it was also surreal, in a way, because I didn’t appreciate the consequences these guys deal with on their bodies and minds. For anyone who says it’s all fake and stupid. So are movies, so are plays, so in the opera, so are TV shows, and the circus is too. It’s about the performance and the show. And wrestlers put on great shows, and they perform with every ounce of their being. I actually think the people who get pro-wrestling are in on the joke, and on a higher plain than people who don’t get it. But the people who don’t get it, ironically look down on the people who do, where as the people who do get it don’t look down on anyone. They just want to enjoy their show.

Build the story and the feud right and it could have been someone that WWE could see long term being their next big guy. Brock didn’t deserve that feather in his cap. It didn’t elevate him at all. @@seanm9823 That's the problem though: they couldn't decide who they wanted to be the next face of WWE at the time so nobody was really being built to be it yet, and Vince apparently really wanted undertaker to lose at WrestleMania. I agree that they could've built a feud and make it someone else, but unfortunately it was Vinny's decision to make and it wasn't really that great in the long run.

@@noahchampagnejr5688 This. The length of The Streak is the most most viable criticism of it as a storytelling device. By the time it came to possible ending it, the WWE suffered a lack of top end, young talent. The younger crop wasn't ready to build off a win, and other veterans (Brock, Orton, Cena) were too established to really get a huge momentum push for it. This is the best argument for not ending the streak at all, not because "it just doedn't feel right, man..." Vince was determined to use the streak to build the next dude, and he didn't know how much time he had left to do it so he fired his shot, then used Brock as the bridge to the next brass ring bearer, so to speak.

It was an appalling decision. Brock was about the least deserving person imaginable to end it. He also didn’t need it. With that said, Taker should have hung it up after his four year Wrestlemania feud with HBK and HHH. He should have gone out on top.

21-1 graphic on screen shows they were ready and also there is no hesitation in the ref ringing the bell after the three count.

Paul is just having fun here, and I love it. He's obviously working the crowd just because that's what he does best and he has a blast doing it.

If the Script called for Taker to win and Lesnar went off script, it would have been the end of Lesnars Career. While he is physically imposing and impressive, there is few people that have the backstage power of Taker. If Taker says something happens in WWE, it does. He is the best friend of the big boss, and without a shadow of the doubt the most respected Wrestler of the last 30 Years. So yeah, Lesnar could have had his way even if Taker wasnt on Board, but after that he would never have stepped foot into a WWE ring ever again.

Well, the ref did count to 3, he did raise Brack’s hand, and Brock’s musoc did play. So obviously the ref, and sound tech knew. There’s no way in hell it wasn’t planned. 🤦🏻

The music didn't play until Brock was out of the ring and hugged Heyman, after about what? 20-25 seconds or more of no music? I remember watching something somewhere that when the referee for the match is interviewed, he said he felt like he made a mistake on doing the three count. There's a back and forth either way if Brock went into business for himself, but Heyman's right. What could they do? No one will ever know the truth about JFK (Hoffa either) just like no one will know the full truth about this.

As soon as it ended, I definitely remember Cole saying "the streak... is over". Then there was a 21-1 graphic on the big screen. Someone obviously prepared that graphic ahead of time. This is WWE. Everything you see is 99.9% micromanaged by Vince (in that timeframe)

​​@@Mark_TakagiI mean Brock Lesnar and Taker are very good friends and he has great respect for Taker so it did not go down like that, it obviously scripted because Vince wanted to push Brock as the next unstoppable monster heel, if Brock went off script and ended the streak Taker would not take too kindly to that at all and would have most likely revealed that in one of his many interviews in recent times.

yep, the music didn’t play immediately for a good 20 seconds after Brock pins Taker. All we would heard is the sound of disbelieve among WWE fans in attendance and Paul says “OMG, you did it”. Brock was like almost stunned after that.

I love the way Paul illustrates his story….

If you watch, his music didn't play for about 30 seconds, the ref DID look confused, The 21-1 graphic was a simple live video transition they threw together last minute. Brock wasn't supposed to beat Taker, but Taker was legitimately concussed, couldn't kick out, and lost which is why Vince couldn't be mad.

Paul is SO full of it. They didn't play the music intentionally, AND they slapped that 21-1 graphic up VERY quickly. Also, he oversold his reaction to the point of it being comical. If Brock did a shoot he'd be scrubbing toilets at WWE HQ for the rest of his contract. Mark was asked by Vince to do the job and give the rub, and he did it. PERIOD!

People say "oh if Brock got fired he'd just get a payday from AEW" but fail to realize a company may not be so quick/eager to scoop up a wildcard that can upend everything on a whim like that (& pay for the privilege no less). Huge liability on a few crucial levels.

If Paul Heyman is speaking, he is fucking with you, because he is the absolute master of fucking with people. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing is up to you, and depends entirely on the situation

The disappointing thing about the streak ending was that it was Brock. The Undertaker was correct, he didnt NEED it. But also, ages ago when he faced Yokozuna in a casket match, I really thought something like that would have happened. A no holds barred match and everyone that fell to the streak in the past would all attack The Undertaker (if all were available and/or alive to do so). And then his opponent would beat him after insane amounts of interference. Just to give it some sort of injustice feeling. Then he could have periodically returned and just cost said interfering superstars matches down the line. I don't know. Just didnt want the streak to end.

Great idea, old school, of course they'd have to get all the people that beat Taker in past Manias and they couldn't do that, especially since El Gigante (Giant Gonzales) was dead. Your idea was from the Royal Rumble casket match from 1994, of course, months later when Taker returned he got his revenge on Yoko with Norris as the special troubleshooting outside guess referee/enforcer, at SS that same year.

"He didn't need it!" people say this as if the idea of the THE UNDERTAKER losing THE STREAK to someone who actually does "NEED" it makes more sense!!!! If they're small enough that they "need" it than they are not worthy to be the one to end the damn STREAK!!!

I get your point but the streak was super duper prestigious and in all likelihood it will never be duplicated or replicated so the person who beat the streak would get instant credibility. The point is that Lesnar who was already an established talent, didn't need that credibility, someone else could have benefited from it. Also, to your point, it would have added to the unpredictability of it, if said wrestler would have looked like he had no chance of beating Taker, then that's even better, or well would shock the fans when he finally did, and again that would instantly and hopefully "make" said wrestler.@@natman2939

I love how that phukker takes a simple Q + A and makes it FUN - even for an old fart like me who doesn't follow it anymore but I still watch a LOT of matches from the days of the Territories - I loved this clip. This new WWE is still so alien to me that when I hear Heyman speaking I'll have to rewind a lot because I drift off picturing that big, fat, bas**d with his '80s Mullet and he weighed about 165 lbs. So I have to remember that he's the same guy that popped up in Charlotte in the late '80s. Now I've always rooted for the heels (Naitch + the original 4 Horsemen) yet I still think he's a sleaze-ball but he has a mind for the Wrestling business like few others have had. I'm talking up there w/ giants like Graham, Watts, and Boesch. I don't put Jim Crockett in there because, I may wrong, and it won't be the 1st or last time, but I think Crockett was so successful because of Jim Barnett. Barnett jumped ship, went to the WWF. It wasn't that long after he left Crockett's overspending ways caught up w/him and JCP went belly up. Heyman moved on + up.

This conspiracy theory doesn’t make much sense with Brock being a pro and having respect for Taker. But what actually makes sense is the possibility that Undertaker got concussed and couldn’t kick out.

Also, we know that it’s not just as simple as ‘taking him to Suplex City and then hoisting him up for an F5…’ The Undertaker has to allow him to execute the suplexes and would know if Lesnar was deliberately trying to knock him out. At the point he would just refuse to play ball. Lesnar is a beast but he’s still not going to just rag-doll the Undertaker and knock him out if he’s not going along with it.

Asif brock would go into business for himself against the undertaker of all people the locker room leader since the 90s, none of the boys would work with him ever again

The truth is in the middle, i do believe Vince and Taker wanted the streak to continue but Lesnar was having none of it so he convinced Vince to give him the streak if he wants him to fight otherwise he might've told him "imma win anyways it's up to you" and what Heyman is displaying as the possible consequences of Brock doing his thing makes 100% sense that he could well do that. In fact there is a clip of Brock and Taker behind the scenes right about to make entrance to the ring where Brock tells Taker not to worry about it and that they will make him get a "comeback" of the character in the future of the business or some shit like that and taker just nods but he doesn't look convinced at all but simply accepts it. In fact i Taker always says in interviews that the streak obviously would have to come to an end eventually, but he also always says that Brock did not need that in his career, as he is already a very decorated fighter of the industry, and that perhaps someone else could've benefitted more from conquering the streak in his place. And i totally agree, Brock's win was indeed shocking, but somewhat anticlimactic, i would've preferred a "good" guy with maybe a sad storyline to be the one that "did the impossible" in the face of his adversities. That just works better from a writer's perspective. edit: While thinking about all of this, something else came to my mind: perhaps, just maybe, after Vince got blackmailed by Brock into submission "or else", Vince didn't take at full heart, and perhaps he told Heyman to throw this little piece of trivia in interviews if he ever gets the chance, but also to keep it lowkey and like "in character" so that it's not obvious but that winks an eye to the people that were interested in the streak.

He started off by saying it won't happen unless mcmahon allows it so I think people like the ref and the sound guys not being ready adds to the surprise element plus the titontron guy was ready because whoever that is put up the 21-1 up and the crowd finally makes a noise

The original plan was for the undertaker to win. But Vince McMahon changed the plan decided to end the streak. Mark callaway said it. He also said brock didn't need it. If he had to pick someone to end the streak it would of been Roman Reigns.
