You could say the entrance as a whole and how well the entrance suited that particular character. Granted some of that isn't down the wrestler themselves although they probably have some say on it. When you hear the beginning music of an icon entrance whether it be Bret's guitar, Undertaker's gong, Stone Cold's glass break or The Rock's if you smell (Do you smell it you prefer that one), it is all part of the overall character package from the moment the music hits and they walk out to when they finish the match, all of it's important.

I think he undersold the look but oversold his promo ability (at least in his prime, once he started turning heel in late 96 early 97 his promo skills got a lot better)

I gotta be honest, I’d give bret hart a 9/10 on look. He might not be the most intimidating or biggest guy, but he was the most coolest looking one. 10/10 on wrestling, and 6-7/10 on promo.

@@JoshLavian I agree that he's wrong about HHH, but I don't think it comes from bitterness. I think Bret still sees him as Shawn Michaels' sidekick from the mid 90s. The truth is, HHH wasn't that good when Bret was still with the company. He was just okay. He got much, much better from 1999 and on. Ironically, HHH seemed to be taking pages out of the Bret Hart playbook when he started to improve. Cerebral Assassin = Hitman. Aiming for certain body parts and focusing on them throughout the match. I even think he might have been watching heel Bret in WCW, because injuring guys after matches was Bret's thing in 1998, and HHH started going for something similar from 1999 and on.

@@Cableguy15 Yeah I wouldn't agree with Bret about HHH. He has more creative control now than when he did under Vince, and the product has shown improvement. Vince was amazing for so many decades, but he wasn't at the top of his game when he left. And it's not a knock, no wrestling company could come close to Vince even when he wasn't. If he truly was as bad as the IWC made him out to be, ROH, NJPW or someone else would have surpassed WWE a decade ago. Overall though, I think WWE will continue to benefit with Triple H in charge of creative. The only thing that could hurt him is getting dead-set in his ways, and refusing to change things. But overall, WWE has smart people, and an amazing Business Intelligence team that really knows how to leverage data. Not to mention, the way they handled the presser with Cody, and the Bloodline angle in general has been really well done.

I have to disagree with Bret on HHH....sort of. I don't think HHH is too creative in his wrestling, but I think he has a real good head for promos and storytelling. HHH was brilliant at selling and working heat in promos.

Right, he specifically said he didn't think HHH put forth any ideas for a match. He did not say anything about his coming up with storylines and such which I think is where HHH is pretty good but I have to admit I'm bored of the WWE of today. Mostly I think it's because I remember the Attitude era where you never knew what was going to happen and it was absolutely crazy some of the things they came up with. It was entertaining. The production is much more PG and a bit more polished and I think I like the unpredictability and grittiness of how things were before. Nothing about the guys working because some of them are really good. The production just isn't to my taste and that's ok, someone out there is enjoying it.

@@cmdrdredd I actually think Hunter is good for all of that. He is head of creative on the main roster and before that he was in charge of developmental. You look at the best times of developmental, and it was him that was not doing the stories, but in charge of shaping the matches. this was the time when developmental shows were better than the main roster shows. As far as things being unpredictable, I think Hunter has also proven that he can make things unpredictable. What happened at Survivor series would be one example, and again I point you back to when he was in charge of developmental, and so many unpredictable moments there. WWE is far from perfect but no company is perfect. It is definitely been much better than it used to be because of him.

@@WarriorPride65 I agree with you. Brett left WWE in late 97. At that point Hunter was only in the company for a couple years and he was only a pro wrestler from maybe five years at that point. He never really started inserting ideas and coming up with things, and, trying to get more of a handle for the business and the creative until a couple years later. So even though Brett is probably right about how Hunter was when he was there it’s still not fair assessment, because when Brett was there, Hunter was still a relative rookie in the business.

Hell no... he never had... all his work is generic as hell. He never fit to the level of the big guy when he was there. He was no Stone Cold, No Rock, No Taker, No Kane, No Benoit, No Guerrero, No Y2J, No Booker T, No Sting, No Goldberg, No Lesnar... he was the guy who was nobody.

Also consider how Bret could play either heel or babyface effortlessly. His knowledge of ring & promo psychology was staggering. He was never terribly eloquent, but he understood how to work the audience so extremely well. And his heel & babyface personas were not terribly different. There was pretty much an identical attitude & tone for both, he would just adjust the talking points slightly. This made him so much more believable. His greatest gift was giving pro wrestling legitimacy when so few performers in his era -- particularly in gimmick-heavy WWF -- could do that.

Up until his final Heel run in WWF, Hart couldn't cut a decent promo. He lacked a certain confidence in what he was saying, just almost blindly looking into the camera & going through the motions, knowing what he had to say but put nothing personal behind his words. Say what you want about him & the business but a top guy, especially back then, needed to be able to cut a great promo, or at least have a mouth piece to do it for them. And Bret's mic skills just weren't there.

I remember as a kid a bunch of us always repeating Bret's best there is, best there was... thing. He was never at the level of a lot of the guys during the Attitude era, but he was still pretty good.

Bret had a great look. 8/10. His promos with HBK and America sucks were easily 7/10. He improved immensely throughout his career.

I'd say Look was 8/10, his promos were 7/10, and his in ring wrestling was 10/10. People can argue what the best match ever is, until we're all on AARP, but one of the few names that's in every debate for best match ever is Bret Hart. He's delivered such a consistently high number of "best ever" matches that it really is hard to pick just one. For me personally it's Wrestlemania 12. I do not see how you top Wrestlemania 12.

Brets rating as a wrestler made his look even better. The pink and black attire with the white and black shoes went well with his style. Hell even his entrance attire was super cool.

Bret was definitly one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. He had many many fans here in Germany and he was my favourite Wrestler too.

Brets promos as a anti american heel were some of his best promos ever...I would rank him higher then a 6 with promos

I agree. Whether it's a promo or just an honest interview like this, Bret come across as very convincing. And I totally agree with him about HHH. I never though Hunter was anything special. His friendship with Shawn is what put him on the map and his marriage to Stephanie is why he's in the position he's in today. Clasic case of it's not what you know, it's who you know.

HHH is one of the best heels ever, and a guy who always delivered, and was dedicated, he teared the quads, yet kept in the match, got burned in the chest during an entrance, yet he did the match and none even noticed, he may had more chances for marriage with steph but also he is one of the greats

I go back to youtube where you can watch mat classics from stampede wrestling from the late 70's to about 84 and see how fast BH developed his talents in a very short period of time. Bret Hart vs Dynamite Kid when they're both really young and uber talented are hard hitting, quasi shoot matches that still blow my mind. He took that talent and adjusted it to suit the WWF at thetime and was one of the main reasons I was such a dedicted fan. he made you believe.

At least we can say Bret doesn't play the game... he's always been himself and never switched up nor let the fans sway how he really feels ably a wrestler.

Those were all brutally honest and absolutely accurate scores. Brett and Shawn delivered some of the most intense and realistic LOOKING matches in the history of the sport, they are absolutely 10/10 in the ring. They sold every single jab, chop, and stomp that today's wrestlers simply can't.

If you’re putting together a HOF or a ‘Mount Rushmore’ I think you need a fourth category which would be Legacy - what was the wrestler’s lasting impression on the wrestling business?

Bret is my favorite wrestler of all time the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be! In my estimation is 10 6 10 26 out of his own 30 but the from all the other wrestlers who ever wrestled him said the fact no one ever got hurt in all his years and matches he was in until he retired no one else fake or not can say that.

I agree with everything Brett said until the last bit about HHH. Not sure I've ever heard Brett sound more ignorant than that considering just how well WWE is doing under HHH as creative lead. All these wrestlers talking about how HHH has helped them, same with HBK. Dude is still living in the past.

HHH is doing good but it’s still not perfect by any means..Drew is bouta lose again to Seth, they are doing nothing with Nakamura, NXT has took a step back and WWE is still struggling with the women’s tag division..Only thing that’s really gotten better since HHH took over is promos..I still find myself skipping thru most of Raw and SD every week

@@shinsukecorbin425 Expecting perfection of anyone is a ridiculous stance to take. The point is, HHH has made WWE much more enjoyable than when Vince was in control of creative. I don't think anyone would dispute that. Storylines are more cohesive and are not dropped at a whim. As you said promos are better. It's just a much better product. Enough said to be honest. And I don't agree with you on basically everything you said as your examples, minus the women's tag division. Nakamura is getting a ton of spot light with top guys. I do hope Drew wins, but if not, then that's ok because I don't believe he has to for his story to continue to develop. The women's tag division, sure, but they are getting some good TV time, and that's more than you can say for other wrestling shows. I feel like you're just nitpicking to nitpick :P But it's ok if it's not your style or whatever, that's fine. That's why there are other shows.

Huge difference since HHH took completely over. Same for Drew, Seth, LA Knight, etc. Vince had 2 or 3 guys,mostly part timers he sold & everyone else was just mostly lost in the shuffle

@@jasoninflagstaff yeah like Nakamura even though Heel Nakamura under Vince and HHH has done very little winning in big feuds. This version of heel Nakamura is more interesting than ball kicker Nak and the Nak that teamed with Sami and Cesaro.

I think his statements about the look is absolutely spot on. If you think about some of the greatest talents in wrestling over the years, they developed a character that was larger than life and could easily have been a comic book character - The Undertaker, Ultimate Warrior, Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Goldberg. They had an immediate presence and signature style. That look is probably a one in a million type of talent.

I both understand and hate Bret’s thoughts on Triple H. I get why he dislikes Hunter so much. Despite him being far better and respected as a person now, he was absolutely a garbage person back in the day. And he was one of the biggest masterminds in the screwjob, to the point that he literally was the one to say they should “Do business for him” BUT Trips is a WAY better person now and has owned up to his past. He’s made it clear he doesn’t necessarily regret it all. But he’s owned up to it and admitted he was wrong! And by all accounts today he’s a phenomenal and caring boss! Hell, look at this week. He made sure to pretape smackdown and made sure there were no events at all so wrestlers could get a break and enjoy the holidays for once! He’s also pushing the people who deserve it and have worked for it!! I’d say as far as look: EASILY a 10/10 (just look at the dude!! He screams pro wrestler!!), Promo: Probably 6 or 7/10 (he’s good on the mic and at times one of the best, but a lot of times he seemed to copy and paste on parts. Plus The Rock said it best when he used to make fun of his generic promo voice back in the day! 😂), as skill I’ve always hated Bret’s assumption that he’s a 3/10. Skill: He’s DEFINITELY a solid 8 at the least! Yeah he’s fairly predictable in a lot of matches. But Triple H’s predictable is still damn good!! And he’s shown he can pull out a damn clinic whenever he wants to with zero effort! Look at his matches with Daniel Bryan at Mania, Ambrose at Roadblock, his Matches with Taker. He’s so damn good! Yeah he’s a little self indulgent when it comes to match lengths, but oh well. 🤷‍♂️ Triple H is also (despite Bret’s opinion) a creative genius both in and out of the ring! His ring psychology is top notch. And he’s shown that he has a keen eye for storytelling, especially when it doesn’t pertain to him (weirdly!). Sure he used to be full of ego and made nonsensical decisions to help himself. But he’s shown both later in his own career and especially now that he has a great mind for the business! The product has been great with him at the helm! The guy deserves his hate for how he was from the 90s to 2000s. But from late 2000s to now he’s shown how good he is!

I agree. HHH was my favorite wrestler as a kid. I was always drawn to the heels, I still am all these years later! I got into fitness as a kid because of HHH. I think Bret's view on HHH is completely ignorant and shows that the Hitman has a bit of a childlike mind when it comes to people he didn't like back in the 90s. He can't move on and grow up.

Brett's 6/10 mic rating for himself seems generous lol He had a great look (if you were a kid at the time, you wanted Brett's glasses) and his wrestling still holds up to this day as incredible. Imagine if he had a Paul Heyman to work with?

Arguably the highest rating in these categories combined I'll give to Undertaker. Looks, Promos and Wrestling! He's wildly popular here in South Asia

Too many fantastic talents have said that MM needed to go over over every aspect of the match ad - nauseum beforehand and had a real problem calling spots in the ring. I still loved they guy and his insane promo's with the late great Gene Okerland, but my ranking is as follows .......... look - 8/10 promo - 10/10 skill level - 7/10

I've always divided it between WRESTLERS and ENTERTAINERS. Kurt Angle vs Hulk Hogan so to speak. But Bret has an interesting take.

I think a lot of Bret's awesome nuance was lost on me as a kid watching. If I rewatch classic matches I'm sure will marvel at his world class skill and finesse. Ultimate Warrior made the biggest impression on me, it sucks hearing he was difficult to work with and he didn't take care of his fellow wrestlers. That being said, I'm still a Warrior fan for life. His passion and all-out/all-in nature resonates with me to this day. R.I.P.

On this one, I have to disagree with Bret. HHH drew with Austin, Taker, Rock, Mick Foley, Shawn Michaels, Batista, Randy Orton, Brock Lesnar…etc. Although people can make the argument that it was HHH opponents who really drew, those guys needed a great heel to work with and HHH is one of the greatest heels of all time. He also has built up NXT and made other stars, so I can think Bret should give credit where credit is due.

No one ever said "i want to go to a HHH match", he wasnt the one drawing in those matches he was just the stable heel because he was banging the bosses daughter. Is HHH a bad wrestler? No he was ok, he was a good work horse for thar era as a heel but he wasnt at the talent level of Taker, Austin or rock, I wouldnt put him top 10 heels all time either

Bret also has openly said he dislikes HHH. He is gonna be bias as hell when it comes to HHH. Also Bret never worked with HHH during Triple H's prime. If you actually watched WWF during 98-2002 Triple H was the biggest heel in the company while also leading the most popular WWF stable, DX. He was one of the top guys in WWF during those years. He is also is highly talked about when it comes to his character, his in ring skill and being a top ring general by wrestlers such as Undertaker, Stone Cold, and The Rock.

@@huntersnake1140 agreed. If he didn’t have the McMahon’s son-in-law stigma he would be considered underrated. In my opinion he is right up there with Harley Race, Ric Flair, The Freebirds, Rowdy Piper, etc as the greatest heels.

The look rating doesn't mean biggest, baddest. There has to be an "X" factor. Something you can't put your finger on. People like Bret, Edge, Orton, Angle. The belt always felt at home on those guys

Its funny because HBK has a higher overall ranking due to promo skills, but he and Bret have always seemed equals, the perfect match!

Bret was 10/10 in looks, 7/10 in promo, 10/10 in ring. GOAT.

I doubt HHH listens to this nonsense.

The thing about Bret's ranking is not all stuff is weighted the same. Promo and looks mean far more than wrestling, and selling means more than how impressive you are technically. It also matters who's your audience. I hated Hogan as a wrestler, but lots of fans loved him. Bret was a good mix but he was never a guy to sell out the arenas or take wrestling to the heights Hogan did.

@@indyshome I think Bret overestimates just little the wrestling matters vs how much the star power, charisma matters. He's more well rounded than Hogan, but Hogan's star power in the 80s was insane.

Sort of like Arnold Schwarzenegger as a actor. Sure he was not that skilled at acting but.... he was the action superstar of his time. Next to another guy Sylvester Stallone. Who himself was only a marginally better actor.

Keep in mind this was 2019, i'd love to hear what he thinks of things now, especially Drew has upped his promo game lately, that Drew || CM Punk promo was pretty decent last Monday Jan 8th, 2024.

Bret just tells it like he sees it. He even acknowledges his weaknesses and admits that others are better at promos than he is, but doesn’t seem upset by that. I respect that.

Bret and Shawn are still the two wrestlers I’d say are the greatest at what they do. The two gentlemen I can call a double goat set

Excellence of execution is an understatement- in ring ability was off the charts, all the moves and bumps were perfect

Bret's self rating is spot on... he knows his mic skills were okay, his looks were right where he said it was although in my opinion he was a 9... the Pink/black with the leather jacket and the cool sunglasses were awesome for that time!!! and a PERFECT 10 on Wrestling skills!!! YES he was that good... very responsible and the safest to work with inside and outside the ring.

Bret is pretty humble/honest on his ratings. He is my favorite wrestler to watch.

Bret is my favorite wrestler of all time. Look, 10 promos, 8 & in-ring 10+. No one exhibited poetry in motion like Bret Hart.

I truly believe if Bruce never destroyed Calgary Stampede (twice), Bret probably could have done something with a Canadian promotion. Maybe smaller like the NWA is now, I don't see him running a HUGE promotion that would travel all over. But maybe an offshoot of the NWA brand but all Bret ideas and themes would be great

I love how he slips in the HHH dig right at the end. Funny!

One of the most accurate and unbiased takes of wrestling overall scores broken down into individual attributes, and of course it was courtesy of arguably the greatest im ring performer of all time. Thanks for showing why you're the man, Bret the Hitman Hart!

In late 80s/early 90s WWF Bret was one of, if not the coolest looking guy in the fed....... Only Macho Man really came close and he was a bit more OTT and cartoonish...... The pink & black + the wrap-around mirror shades was fresh and modern.

Triple H began his ascension post Hitman time in the WWF so of course he’s not aware of his abilities as a ring general but everyone he’s worked with in the very late 90s into the 00s has said that he was a ring general. His best friend was Shawn Michaels so I’m sure he was able to pick up a few tips from him along the way.

Connive is fitting. Even in HHH interviews of past and present, he is strategic for his come ups on how to remain in Wwe, and marrying Stephanie was his JACK POT to seal his spot in the business, fame, money and control. Few people want to disagree with Brett on HHH but, Brett got it right with using the word Conniving.

Damn to me as a kid Bret had the besk look, he looks like a rockstar to me as a kid so I gave him 10 for the looks, 7 for the promo and 10 for the wrestling skills. I love his looks with leather jacket, long hair, pink and black, Skull with wings and a heart. One of the coolest looks ever in wrestling.

Bret is the GOAT in my opinion but he’s wrong about Triple H. Bret wasn’t in the company in Triple H’s prime. The guy in his prime was an A+ to an A-talent that got huge reactions and had his hand in storylines and such. His track record lately has been pretty good too.

You'll probably disagree, but HHH is just a bigger Chris Jericho to me. If Jericho was four inches taller and 50 pounds heavier, he could have been in a lot of the same matches HHH was in. I don't always agree with Jim Cornette, but I think his comment about HHH is spot on. He's not THE GUY, he's the guy that fights THE GUY.

​@@bigolebotthere was a 3 year period when he was the sole top guy between the rock and Austin leaving and Cena taking over, and for quite a while SmackDown beat Raw during that period. You don't usually see that with the other 3, Hogan or even Reigns now. Triple H is great and while Bret's opinion can be disputed with, especially with the boom in wwe after he's taken over, but Cornette unfortunately was right with that remark

It took someone that he really hated to bring out his best promo wise. But he made up what he lacked in other categories with a 30/10 for his work. He sold everything, and made everything look so natural yet stunning at the same time. His pacing, his cadence, his striking, his tossing, his bumping, EVERYTHING was as cool and slick as can be. His match with Bulldog is my favorite of all time.

While Brett was lobbying for himself, HHH was meeting or on the phone w/Vince. In fact, b4 his' medical issue, he was putting drew over @WM.

I'd say Hogan was more like a 6 or 7\10 for wrestling if you factor in his Japanese stuff. Only reason his US stuff was more basic was Vince wanted it that way, less chance of him getting injured and to keep the "Rock 'n' Wrestling" gravy train on the tracks for as long as possible, and Hogan was the figurehead for that.

Hogan was definitely a 7 for ring abilities, 10 for look and I'd say a solid 8 for promos. You can't just carry pro wrestling for a decade and be rated low like that. Doesn't make any sense. Yeah some of his promos were wacky, but his prime years were wacky years for pro wrestling in general. His heel turn promo in WCW is probably one of the best ever. "Mean Gene the first thing you need to do is to tell these people to shut up!"!

@@TheFlamingPike - If you look closely at Hogan be it heel or face; his respective character ran out of steam promo-wise.... By 91/92 in WWF his face promo's became a cliche of himself... Then he bounced to WCW and repeated his face shtick and it ran out of steam even sooner. The he had his heel turn and the same process played out but over a shorter peak period.... He was so boring during the second half of his NWO run. The catch-phrase, sound-bite guys like Hogan would never cut it in today's era where guys like Cena, Punk, HHH or whoever would have to open Raw with a 15 minute promo every week. Even Rock struggled when he returned for the Cena fued.

You have to be on drugs to think hogan was a 7 on in ring abilities. Dude was extremely limited and only did a big boot, slam and leg drop for most of his career. Who cares what he did in Japan? That was a tiny fragment of his career.

You can tell yourself he ran out of steam if you want but if you were honest with your argument you'd use it with other wrestlers and you'd realize Hogan's run was massive. How many managed to be on top as long as Hogan did? I can only think of Ric Flair, Sting, the Undertaker and Chris Jericho. Of course Hogan's promos wouldn't work today. You can't compare eras that literally have decades of evolution between them. The business has changed. I'm not a Hogan fanatic but people are delusional, trying to downplay his importance, skills or anything else. Hulk Hogan was cultural icon who transcended the sport.

He’s got some resentment that clouds his judgment. HHH was a great promo, great look and was great in the ring. He was already a star before he got with Stephanie and was incredibly young and early in his career when hit man was there. He has earned everything that he got, and I get tired of hearing how hhh is only a legend because of dating the bosses daughter. Hhh was one of THE greatest heels ever and you can’t force an audience to make you a star. Brett is a legend for sure but hes waaay off on hhh. Undertaker even regards hunter as one of the greats and if taker thinks that then Brett is just dead wrong

I can agree with a lot of that , although I think Shawn's promo skills are closer to a 9, not a 7, and he's clearly dead wrong about HHH because he's been in control for awhile now and the show had vastly improved since he took over. Much better stories, great matches and feuds. Its been nothing but praise since he took over

These are exactly the categories I've used over the years as well. Based on this scoring system, I've always been curious why people have CM Punk ranked so high. I'd give him a 3 on look, 10 on mic skills, and maybe a 6 on wrestling skills. I think he's a really good worker, meaning he is both safe, and well thought out, but his move set is limited. I always thought of him as a mid-card guy. Bret, OG Msked Kane, Guerrero, Sting, and Benoit are 5 of my favorite all time, for anyone who's curious.

Bret from 1988-1996 improved immensely in look and promo. By 96/97, he was at the top of the card for a reason. At his peak, Bret was a 8/10 on look, 7/10 on promo, and 11/10 on work.

I'd give Bret a 8 or 9 on the look. The look is iconic. I used to be really fit, before i had to learn to walk again. If im blessed to build my body up, i really want to halloween cosplay as BtHH.

Bang on, and it's why The Rock was so great - he had a much shorter spell at top level than anyone else, but he had 10's for looks and promos, and a solid 9 for his ability to work in the ring, he could even work a crowd during a match FFS. The WWE isn't 'legit' wrestling, it's entertainment, if you can't sell a move or get the fans on their feet then you're in the wrong business, it's why Goldberg worked, doesn't matter how many moves he had (or lack of), for a brief period everyone was invested in him just getting in the ring and pulverising the opponent for a few minutes.

Straight facts. Him and HBK had phenomenal wrestling skills!

Bret had a solid look 8.5/10. Well built, not the biggest guy but still believable enough where you can see him take on bigger guys. The Pink and Black attire is top notch and unique like Hogan's Red and Yellow; you dont think of those color combos in wrestling without thinking of Bret and Hogan. Weakest was his Promos that ranged from 6 out of 10 to about 9 out of 10 during his last WWF run as a heel. Ring work speaks for itself 10 out of 10. Rarely had a bad match, great seller and could win matches with any move so he didn't have to rely on his finisher which provided logic to a match.

Whats ironic here, HHH is uinversally praised for NXT and revitalizing the main brands for WRESTLING. He could not be further wrong HHH's management or his fueds with Batista, Rock, and the Shield. Massively underrated ring performer IMO

Personally, I felt Bret Hart had a good look to him, about a 8/10 on promos, 7/10 on look and 10/10, so he comes in for me at 25/30, which is pretty dang good. (I really felt his look was his weakest point but it still stood out and his promos were usually good. Obviously, his overall wrestling ability completely outshined everything) Shawn I put on a 10/10 on promos, 7/10 on look and 8/10 on wrestling abilities. It was once said, "Bret gave better matches, Shawn gave better performances". I felt that was accurate. (He certainly knew how to have charisma as a heel or a face, he had a good look and was underrated in the ring but his charisma I felt was always a bit stronger) Stone Cold Steve Austin I put a 10/10 on promos, a 6/10 on look (He had a plain look, but he made it work), 8/10 on wrestling (While he wasn't so much a technician after his neck injury, he was still exciting and had a great brawling style that was well done). Hulk Hogan was a 10/10 on promos, 10/10 on look but a 3/10 in wrestling IN THE USA. Over in Japan, before his knees and spine got so bad, I felt his wrestling was a 5/10 or a 6/10, much better than people realized. (Whether as Hulk or Hollywood, Hogan was an underrated heel and a legendary hero, he knew how to get the crowd invested with cheers or boo's, but when it came to wrestling, his timing was sometimes off and terrible, his brawling was simplistic and not as exciting sometimes as Steven Austin's.) Triple H I felt had a 10/10 in look, when it came to promos I felt he was a 7/10 and when it came to matches, I felt he was a bit underrated, about a 7/10. (I felt he combined some technical wrestling and some brawling and some power moves fairly well and performed them well. His look was his strongest point to me, both his build and his outfits, minus that freakin' horrid terminator-esque one in his match with Sting, but I always felt HHH was underrated a bit and to my knowledge, Bret didn't wrestle with him during his prime as "The Game") The Rock was a 7/10 in look (it was plain, I just gotta say it, as a wrestling it was plain) but he was a 10/10 in promos and a 8/10 in wrestling. (The Rock had some charisma that was just amazing, up there with Hogan and Austin, his wrestling was a bit underrated in my opinion. He had a rhythm to what he did and strong athleticism and a personality to his moves that really was excited and fun to watch). While I would agree that of the greatest, HHH might not be as technical as Shawn Michaels, as charismatic the Rock or as good a wrestling as Bret, he was still a legend that could give great matches and promo's. 2nd place isn't losing when you're standing with legends and I feel that while Triple H may not have been the most ideal in terms of creative direction with the business, that doesn't mean he was a crappy wrestler.

Bash Hogan's wrestling skills all you want, no one was a bigger name in the wrestling industry than Hogan. Next is Stone Cold, and Ric Flair is there for longevity of being The Man. If you're making your Mt Rushmore, the next name is debatable. But those 3 are cemented in for all time.

In Hogan's defence (not something I ever thought I'd say) his 3/10 working was only in America. In Japan he was a totally different beast. He was technical as hell. It's just that Pervy Vince didn't want him to do anything except for "Hulk smash!" in the WWF. His Japanese work was a solid 7/10. Not on the level of the Harts, Michaels, Taker, Lesnar etc, but well worth those extra four points.

It's a matter of how it meshes with character. Stone Cold had a very limited moveset after neck injury, and yet it still worked well with his back-street brawling gimmick.

I think Bret was very fair here in his ratings, though i would give Stone Cold 10/10 for his look. I thought Bret undervalued himself here. To me part of your look is also ring attire. His pink and black attires were always cool, his jackets and shades were amazing. I would give him a 10. As far as Triple H, Bret might be describing the 1997 Triple H. But he has matured and has a great mind for thrle wrestling business. He did wonders with NXT. He has a right mix of old school wrestling mindset and modern wrestling.

Agreed with everything minus the last blip about HHH.

Same. Triple H might have been an asshole but he’s done so much good since then.

Saying WWE would fail with HHH in creative control did not age well at all.

I grew up during the height of Hogan as a youngster and let me say it was special. For a kid under 10 years old the rankings for my friends and I during the 80’s into the 90’s. We ranked them by singles and tag teams were just separate. Also as kids we didn’t have a heel as a favorite so that’d totally different rankings if we go by how good they were. Just to name the heels we loved to hate Andre/Rick Rude/Undertaker/Dibiase/Mr Perfect/Razor/Bundy/Steele/Iron Sheik/Big Boss Man/Shawn Michaels after he kicked Janette through the glass we hated him for a while. I know I’m missing some and this was 80’s into very early 90’sc nothing to do with DX Era/Rock/Stone Cold 1. Hogan 2. Macho Man(we were so torn when Mega Powers broke up!) 3. Ultimate Warrior 4. Jake the Snake was loved by kids because of Damion 5. Piper 6. Beefcake 7. junkyard Dog 8. Dusty Rhodes 9. Bret Hart(when he started singles) 10. Steamboat This was us under 10 years old! Just reminiscing on some good times with the WWF

Bret Hart saying Triple H knows nothing about the wrestling business is a spit in the face. He learned from one of the greats in Killer Kowalski & the political side of it from Vince McMahon. That's why the current WWE product is a blend of sports entertainment (Vince's vision) & the story telling of old school wrestling (like his trainer taught him).

Having good mentors does not mean you become good, and I don't think Vince was that good either. He was lucky WCW shot themselves in the foot when they were about to run him out of business.

Bret is my favorite wrestler of all time and allmost everything he says here is spot on - but that last comment about HHH aged like milk.

I would agree with you. I also think that, even though he might be right about his view of Hunter, I also don’t think it is fair either. When Brett was there, Hunter was still a relative rookie in the business. Hunter broke into wrestling in the early 90s, so by the time Britt left WWE Hunter at most was probably in the business for five years maybe. He never really started to get more of a handle on the business and everything until a few years after Brett left WWE. So yeah, this statement about him, aged terribly and again not really fair of an assessment, considering the time and the experience that he knew him.

@@Blind_Sexy_and_Taken He doesn't base his opinion just on the 90s though, he also trashed HHH's match with Taker at WM 27, to give just one example. I think the most important thing that Bret overlooked was the booking of NXT. I was also never that impressed by HHH's matches (with some exceptions that always come down to his opponents), but classic black'n'gold NXT was my favorite period of any wrestling promotion, so i think his qualities as a booker might be a different kind of animal.

@@Luminator_maior what Brett was specifically referring to in that video, however was what Brett personally saw. He said that he never saw Hunter come up with any ideas for matches or anything. So with that statement is what I said was unfair. I was very impressed with a lot of his matches and it didn’t have to do with just the other guy. He has had very good matches with a wide range of opponents. If you’re able to have great matches with a wide range of opponents, you’re not able to be in the ring.

@@Luminator_maior He was also not in any creative position. When Bret came back he was there for all but 5 minutes. If you add up all of his time there and possibly around Hunter you will come up with less than 4 years.

he was pretty solid on his ratings of hogan, austin, michaels and himself.

The one thing wrestlers today don't have but Bret had in spades was believably. Bret's stuff looked tough and he meant it. Go watch any Bret v Bulldog match and tell me that it doesn't look like two guys trying to hurt each other.

When people like Bret or Jim Cornette rank Shawn Michaels' promos, they always exclusively talk about his work in the 90's. In the 2000's Shawn definitely improved to a 9 out of 10 promo, maybe even 10 out of 10. An absolute GOAT.

Bret is way too hard on himself for his mic skills. His promos in 97 were the best in the company, second maybe only to Austin. He probably doesn't think too highly of it because he hated being a heel, but it was great stuff.

Foley was there in 97.

Hogan: Look 10, Promo 9, Wrestling 7 (proved in Japan), Total 26 Austin: Look 6, Promo 9, Wrestling 7, Total 22 HBK: Look 7, Promo 9, Wrestling 10, Total 26 Bret: Look 8, Promo 5, Wrestling 10, Total 23 That's fair.

Austin getting a 7 for wrestling ability is not fair at all. Especially before his neck injury. Easily a 9/10 for in ring ability.

@@linkvagar2336 Austin was punch, punch, punch, stunner for most of his career. Hogan was punch, punch, punch, leg drop for most of his career. If Austin is a 9 because he could do more before his injury, then Hogan is a 9 because he could do more in Japan. And that's not fair to guys like Bret and HBK who were ALWAYS 9 or 10 in the ring. So, Austin and Hogan are a 7.

I don't think he buried anyone except Hunter. But even still he gave his honest OPINION. (Key Word) I respect his opinion and outlook for what it is because of his impact on the business more than anything. I would change a couple but not too many scores but I think he's spot on for most of it.

And you have to think about his era of wrestling and what drew money which is used to base most of his opinion off of.

Bret's promo against Shawn and against America are the best. He's not typical promo guy with catch phrase easy to repeat but he made it sound 100% real.

Bret injury was the best moment of pro wrestling

We’ll see after Wrestlemania how HHH’s plan for WWE is going to work. I feel this is like Austin Vs Michael’s this Mania can take them to that next level.
