Vince wanted to take all of the heat of the incident. Knowing what we know now, it's all a story from the past, since all parties get along now. I'd say the Montreal Screwjob helped the WWF, because Vince used that Screwjob to get heat and would create the Mr. McMahon character.

Bret would have never taken the belt to WCW... he had too much respect for the belt. He didn't want to lose to Shawn, because Shawn said he would not put Bret over in return. Bret felt disrespected by Shawn. Bret said he would lose to anyone else, anywhere, but not to Shawn, and not in Montreal.

I agree, he almost certainly would not have brought the belt to WCW as he didn't have any dislike or hatred of WWF at the time. He WANTED to stay, but Vince couldn't afford what he was worth at that point. The whole situation was a real mess up, and no one is entirely blameless, though I don't agree with Vince or Shawn's actions. Vince should have let Bret go without him putting Shawn over. He was willing to drop the title to literally anyone else, Vince just could not let Bret go without putting Shawn over, which I don't think was necessary. Shawn should have been honest with Bret that he knew what was happening, and that he was ordered by his boss to do it. But in the end, Bret could have just swallowed his pride and put Shawn over before he left. But Bret made a choice to stand by his feelings and principles, and that was that he honestly felt Shawn was unfit to be the top face of the company. Bret cared about the WWF and I think he felt that it was in a sense, partially his creation.

@@StealthMarmot_I want to debate this in my own mannerisms though. So if I curse or seem heated please don't take offense because it's not towards you personally. That being said. So first off who the fuck is Brett to say whether Shawn is or isn't fit to be the champion. It's not at all his concern or his choice to make. Brett was 100% in the wrong here. He's got a job to do Vince is his boss and the man that pays him he needs to stop being a fucking narcissist and do what the fuck he's told. The problem is that Brett always thought he was more than what he was. He always has someone to blame for any type of mishap in his career. ALWAYS whining and complaining and it gets old quick. Like I said he thought he was better than he was. Think about it.... What was so special about Brett Hart? His promos completely SUCKED ass and he was never able to get better. He has absolutely no personality whatsoever. His in ring skills were ok but nothing that was over the top spectacular. His brother Owen was WAY BETTER in and out of the ring. Brett was never able to pull off the high flying acrobatic style like Owen , Dynamite Kid , Chris Benoit , and even Shawn Michaels. Shawn was definitely a better wrestler and 10 times better cutting promos. And it may be hard to believe but I don't dislike Brett. I really don't , there's just something about him that doesn't allow you to dislike him. But I don't know what it is because it's certainly not charisma. And Shawn was a douchebag especially back then. In fact Shawn got his ass kicked at Club 37 by my friend's father. It was in the incident in Syracuse. I think he tried saying he was jumped by multiple people but I assure you it was only one person. But either way Brett had no right whatsoever to go against Vince. That is complete bullshit. And if none of that changes your perspective maybe THIS will. In wrestling it's common knowledge that the characters and storylines are works. It's common sense to realize your just playing a character and although a lot of characters fit the wrestler's real life persona.... It is STILL just a character. Now there's been people in the business that said one of Brett's biggest problems is that he thought he WAS his character. And if you watch Brett's documentary Wrestling with Shadows you'll see exactly WHY he didn't want to drop the belt to Shawn. Because he didn't want to do that to the CHARACTER!!!! He caused all this bullshit because of his MAKE BELIEVE CHARACTER!! That is extremely pathetic and I don't think anyone with half a brain would disagree. And this comes out of his own mouth within the first few minutes. And over the years as the business had gotten more and more exposed that type of excuse looked more and more pathetic. Brett too must of realized this because in the recent years he gives a completely different answer on WHY he didn't want to drop the belt. Basically he said he was all for it at first. He said he went to Shawn and said that Shawn will always be protected in the ring and that he'd NEVER hurt him ( which made no sense seeing that they had already worked together a bunch of times before this but that's what he said). He said Shawn responded by saying he would NOT be doing the same. So now he made it sound like Shawn had this bitter animosity towards him and if you watch the documentary then you know that is completely FALSE!! The documentary was a lead up to this match and at one point you even see Shawn playing with Brett's Son. So there you go Brett completely lied about the Screw Job and it's all documented and very easy to find. I would have to think that even his biggest fans must frown upon this behavior. In your comment you seem like a pretty level headed person. You laid out both sides and seen their points which is commendable. I'd have to say before all this came out and before Brett changed his story I felt kinda bad for him. But that all went out the window. And what makes it worse is how much he carries these lies. Like when Dark Side of the Ring covered this story Brett starts out by saying he's the only one who has told the truth through all this which in reality he's the biggest liar in this case. And then for him to constantly be bitter about this or anything else it just makes him look SO BAD.... It just destroys any type of credibility he's ever had. And like I said earlier I don't hate Brett at all I actually like him. I really do. This is just something I'm passionately against him on....

How many times did Austin lose clean from after his match with Undertaker in 1997 until he walked out in 2002? Literally Kurt Angle at Unforgiven 2001 and no one else. Bret needed to be taken seriously, not be losing clean if his gimmick is being "the best there is, the best there was, the best there ever will be." Bret also was not very protected in some matches he didn't lose in, either. There's the match vs Diesel at KOTR 94, vs Undertaker at RR 96, and vs Ken Shamrock on Raw a few weeks before Montreal in 97.

The only leg Bret had to stand on was he had creative control in his contract. That part I agree with him on. But later for all the "time honored tradition" stuff. Bret likes to talk about honor and what not, well the honorable thing to do is if your boss, the guy who made you millions of dollars and turned you into a big enough start that another company is willing to offer you even more money, asks you to do this one thing, you do it. Doesn't matter if you don't like the guy you had to put over, it wasn't about Shawn, it was about Bret and his legacy and his love for the WWF.

Bret and Triple H could have been the best of friends the day he walked into the company in 1995. But the reason for this not happening is Bret saw right through his act. Triple H was the kinda guy who I'm sure could act like he is your best friend one minute and the next stab you in the back or rat you out to Vince. That's why Bret never trusted him despite I'm sure the fact he saw so much potential and talent in him. Instead of taking someone like this under his wing Bret befriended the Rock and look what became of him. Minus all of the backstage bullshit Triple and his so called best friend Shawn Michales were always involved in. Triple H was only in this business for himself and his buddies. He chose to be their designated driver since day one because he knew they were the ones that ran most of the company and were always in Vince's ear creative wise so he made the decision to be their 4th wheel. It may have worked in the long run but regardless of what anyone says Triple H will never be half the wrestler and mechanic Bret Hart was and will always be remembered as being someone that slept his way to the top of the card 😅😅😅😅

Bret was more than willing to drop the belt to anyone else in the company. Also, Bret had a creative control clause written in his WWF contract that allowed him the right to decide his character's exit from the company. Plain and simple, the real truth eventually came out. About 1 month before Montreal, Bret spoke with Shawn and mentioned he understood they were wrestling at Survivor Series and that Shawn had nothing to worry about, he will be safe and Bret didn’t mind putting Shawn over. Shawn replied that he would not do the same for Bret. From that point on, Bret wanted Shawn to put him over first to show he would and that Shawn’s commitment to the wrestling game was equal.. and he didn’t and that is why the Screw job came about. All these people saying Bret is a whiner perhaps need to work/be on the road 300 days every year for 14 years in a row while only missing 2 days… and see how being stabbed in the back feels after being so loyal. Bret didn’t even have to wrestle at Survivor Series as his contractual total matches were complete for the year. He did because he is loyal. "Brett wanted to hand the belt over on TV and say im going to WCW...You can't do that" Triple H is right. How would the WWF look if the World Champion forfeited the belt and left for another wrestling promotion? It makes your company look 2nd tier. Bret kinda HAD to lose in a match. And he refused. So they did it for him.

HHH saying Bret wouldn't pass the torch is funny. Hmm he forget that Bret did business with him before and dropped the belt at wrestlemania. Hogan never did that for Bret. They should have let Taker grab the belt from Bret.

How is it funny. They both were under contract in 96. Made sense for Bret to do business for him there. Different situation in 97 knowing Bret was leaving in a very active wrestling war, no company knowing how it would end long term. So what was best for wwf's business is what happened. What reason did they have to believe Bret wouldn't pull a Alundra Blaze or Luger?

  • @moparman5058

@@Speedyreedy1218 its funny cause Bret had already passed the torch and did business with Shawn before. So hhh saying that is bullshit. Bret had reasonable creative control in his contract for the last however many days. Bret worked his ass off for so long long to only be backstabbed like that. He's by no means innocent either thinking of forefitting the belt on Raw. But at the end of the day something should have been worked out instead of screwing the man like that. Why would Bret wanna drop the belt to an asshole like shawn when he told hin straight up he woulen't do the same for him. At the end of the day it should have been taker given the belt, this would have been all avoided. Taker was just as well respected in that locker.

@@moparman5058 Just cause Shawn told Bret he wouldn't, doesn't mean he in fact wouldn't. Shawn's personality is like that. He'll fire back verbally when pissed. He put Austin over at WM14. Say what you want about him whining or complaining. He got his steam out and at the end of the day, still did it. So who's to say he wouldn't had for Bret at WM13 if his knee wasn't problematic to do a major WWF title rematch program. It's easier to work a lighter tag run with Austin rehabbing a nagging knee over a top billing program.

Doesn't matter if he was over in Montreal. It's not his hometown. And even if it were, Vince has a tradition of most people losing in their hometowns/areas as winning in them is too predictable. Bret didn't do willingly what he was supposed to, period.

The WWE did the right thing. Bret Hart had written in his book years later that he was never going to drop the title to anyone in the WWE that night in Montreal. The idea for the screw job was Vince McMahon's and he waited for someone in the back to bring it up first which happened to be Triple H out of frustration due to Bret not wanting to business the right way. Vince was going to use the Wendy Richter/Fabulous Moolah finish which was a fast count from the referee but he knew that wouldn't work mainly because Bret Hart had talked to all of the referees and the finish looked too obvious. That's when Jim Cornette pitched the sharp shooter finish. Jim Cornette said that out of all the finishes that he pitched, the one he didn't want to get used was. Vince McMahon told both triple H and Shawn Michaels to deny everything and that he was going to take the hit on this one.

I’ve commented on someone else’s video before, which was this. I’ll start first by saying I was a big Bret Hart fan back then. I liked his character, all of that. But it seemed awful silly to grant Hart with that creative control of his character as he exits out of the company. What does it matter, he’s leaving anyways, why honour that? I think yes, pitch a direction, but ultimately it’s up to Vince to ok it or not. If he was to drop the belt in Montreal to Shawn, then that’s it. No sneaking around. I think Vince should’ve been clear with Bret that THIS was the outcome and that’s it. I’d like to think that if this was made clear, Bret would’ve respected the business enough to go along with it.
