Shawn wasn't saving the company, he was the top guy when WCW started consistently beating the WWF. Granted it wasn't totally his fault, the WWF roster was really thin w/ Hall, Nash, & Bret gone for most of '96, but he was definitely not helping the situation. Really, he was the 1st guy I can remember getting the Cena/Roman treatment as the top face. Watch SvS '96, the crowd totally turned on him for Sid.

  • @m3shad

richard h Shawn was getting the loudest pops out of anyone in the years 95-96. The NYC crowd loved Shawn. What happened was, after he won the title, the little bit of edginess HBK still had as a babyface was taken away because Vince wanted him to be "full on, squeaky clean babyface". The crowds saw right through that. Also, by the time Survivor Series '96 came around, Shawn had been champ for 8 months. The fans wanted something new. Sid was also over like rover. That's why the SS '96 crown turned on him.

Here's something to think about Bret: Scott Hall, Steve Austin, HBK, Piper, Perfect, Bulldog Owen, Benoit, Nash, all said that Bret gave them their best matches they ever had He was 1 of 2 men in the most famous match of all time. Won his first title from flair Headlined 80,000 fans at Wimbley for a title that was not the world title Just something to think of when you hear the counter argument from people like Flair who said he never drew a dime, Bret was such a staple in the 90s wwf it's almost like comparing him to tim duncan, not flashy, not out there scoring 40, not breaking any ankles, but one of the main reasons the spurs have become a dynasty.

This is why Bret said when he and Shawn finally buried the hatchet ... that Shawn had been carrying around this ton of guilt ... and in making peace, they both finally let go. Moreover, Shawn had been wanting to come clean on his side of the story for a while, but Vince kept holding him back, wanting to take all the blame. Can't imagine it must have been easy, being a Christian, having a conscience, and still having to cover up. That sort of stuff eats into you.

Shane Helms said Shawn's Born Again gimmick was exactly that, a gimmick. Judging from this interview, I believe him. Shawn doesn't admit to anything. He makes vague references to bad shit he did in the past, but denies every specific accusation. Before trying to turn Bret Hart's anger around on him, with a fun little bullshit comment about all the forgiveness in his heart. If Shawn actually did turn his life around because of religion, good for him. Not the path I would have taken, but I'm not Shawn Michaels. But this whole interview reeks of salvation-for-show.

I was surprised to see the way he talks in this interview, but that's only because I've seen interviews after this where he has been far more humble than this. I'm firmly in Bret Hart's camp, as I am a fan on him, but I will say that Bret pulled no punches in his comment. Nor should he have. But it's got to be hard for anyone to sit there and take that comment. He is barely a year clean in this interview, from the change I've seen when he's spoken in later interviews, there seems to be a definite change in him. I also think, that a lot of stuff people have said about him isn't true, even though he was an asshat.

Well, he was in the first ladder match, hell in a cell and iron man match of which is one of the most famous matches in WWF history, he formed DX which was the most powerful group in WWF during their very successful period, won several world championships, when he won the iron man match he made Vince a heel after the iron man match(of which has definitely changed the WWF).

No, go to 12: 52 of the video. There is nothing confusing about this. Shawn said that if he had to do it all over again he would take the same course of action in Montreal. He's justifies it by saying that the Bible says to submit to authority. Shawn says, "My boss asked me to do a job, and I went out there and did it," as if nothing your boss tells you to do could ever be wrong. Then, incredibly, he makes the gangster analogy without understanding that he did something unethical.

However the people I would ask about whether he was hurt in early 1997 would be Stone Cold and Dr James Andrews. Stone Cold was getting treatments at the same time that HBK was going treating his knee injury. This knee injury and another in 2003 were the reason he eventually ditched the tights and went for the looser pants to get different knee braces.
