@@d-zone It's Mac only? Scrw that. They should also explain what kind of analog they are using on the inside; do they have switchable transformers for each plugin different color/saturation or something because that would be must-buy or different filters, that would be amazing to use on synths or drums. I hope they do that if this box doesn't have it already.

The only thing keeping me from buying an APB is the fact that you can't have mono instances in Ableton Live, Ableton doesnt have mono tracks. Hopefully McDSP comes up with a fix for this, as there are alot of Ableton users out there like me.

It definitely sounds very nice, and has cool features which I'd want, but it's hard to judge how much it sounds like tape verses a nice mix bus processor. No negatives here because it sounds great, but like you said, most people don't have experience with really nice tape machines. The machines with high fidelity like this are $10-20K+ and can run 30ips, the best comparable I know personally is $2K machine that runs 15ips lol, it gives more *classic tape character* that way, but it isn't true modern mastering grade like this is. The McDSP rack is very cool, and great video to show it off!

Lots of potential with this technology, my dream come true would be if they did bunch of different of these units each with different components - Transistors, tubes, op-amps(Api op amp 2520), analog filters(Sallen-Key, Ladder Filter/Moog, Diode Ladder/Roland-303 etc.) for drums and synths, each with dedicated DSP processing and then made whole Daw that also runs on the hardware + plugins so that it doesn't use any or very small amount of computers DSP, that would be selling like crazy imo, not sure why nobody done it yet but I hope they do eventually.

It's kind of an awkward comparison because you wouldn't buy the APB JUST for this one, you'd have either 8 or 16 channels. If I was to start from scratch, like basically we did in this second studio, I'd go with the APB no doubt because it offers SO much for the price. Specifically this one vs the 542, I'm used to the 542s, I also have units before and after that work in synergy with them. It's just personal preference. By no means this is inferior to them

That's the setup we have at this studio. Tracking units and APB for mixing and yes it might seem expensive at first but when you think you have 16 channels it would take so much more to have the same amount of compressors and eqs and saturators and now even tape. Heck, what you save in cables and converters alone is worth the price, and you got so much more versatility. We rent out this room to other engineers and everyone falls in love with it.

@@mixbustv Sorry for my poor wording. I understand it's an analog unit controlled by a plugin. But it doesn't have actual tape or a magnetic head in it, right? So it is still hardware emulation of tape. The audio examples were a little too subtle. I wanted to hear it pushed to the limit to hear it really distorted compared to a digital/software tape emulation pushed to the max. so I could justify if the percentage difference justifies the price of this unit, or if it's just that 10% extra thing that won't really make or break the mix.

@@mixbustv it is a plugin that runs each instance through a relatively generic analog circuit. I was going to buy a 16 channel unit until I saw the Audio Animals review which opened my eyes to the limitations. Better to spend 10k on the real deal. Show stopper for me is that it a closed box. It is not a true analog insert as you have to go in and out via TB. If it had a set of analogue outs that I could then sent onwards to the rest of my chain, without coming back in the box and out again…. well I’d have bought 4 units already. I already have enough analog comps, EQs and sat boxes to properly process 16 channels anyway. Never-mind the master bus. But this solution does offer a cost effective way for those on a tight budget to add a little analog mojo to mixes using very little rack real estate. PROPER per channel analogue costs 100s of K. This setup is less than 10k
