In this video we gathered them all! Slate Digital Tape Machine, McDSP Analog Channel, Beatskillz Reelight, Overloud TAPEDESK, Waves Kramer Tape, Izotope Vintage Tape, Waves J37, Softube TAPE against the Neve 542's analog tape emulators.
A full description of the signal flow and how to use the very simple but at the same time very complex famous Neve 542 Tape Emulators, two units David has been using for year on every mix, and an audio test of them on some mixes, before digging into the biggest shootout of tape plugins emulators 2019 for the first time against real analog gear.
We know some are missing, feel free to write what you want us to include in a possible follow-up video!

Listening on Sennheisers 600 here. Actually I think you were very forgiving! I listened to the plugins first and then after the shootout was completed I went and listened to the Neve Designs. Being an advocate for ITB mixing, especially considering how much has coding evolved, I admit the difference was incredible. The Neves actually sparked a physical reaction from me, not just from the bump itself but from the way the whole thing worked on the material. Didn´t think the difference would be so big to be honest. Excellent video.

Yeah for sure, the real hardware has far more dynamic range and smoothness… the difference is extremely obvious on the Focal trio11 Be studio monitors… pretty difficult for a plugin to duplicate true analog saturation… Still not as good as real tape but way less pain and financial suffering… was enough to get me to invest in a pair of them anyway…

I think it's not a big shame to upload it now)) Huge improvement in softening the sound, geting reed of that micro-sharp edges was all over! This one really works. Like a real tape-machine in my house)) BTW I was using Ozone previously and it's add a crazy amount of latency- somewhere around 50 ms (as all Ozon plugins does) and it's more like for open a sound at low bias and low input gain mostly i/m using. But it's really heavy! I'm just doing it for fun, of course. And it's cool, that we able to do this so easy now.

You helped a lot to see the differences as the exemple of saturating with the pre input gain versus the saturator (both the Neve 542 and the plugins sounded to me like more low end from the input gain versus saturation knobs, although the input has a narrow limit which starts to fall apart ). The differences between using it on individual tracks versus to mix into it. Thanks a lot!

That'd be like comparing every console emulation against one hardware channel. Different tape units are modeling different circuitry and different tape types, each of which is going to have a different tonal color and a different transient response. I'm glad you said that you're not going to be doing an A/B, because that would be impossible with so many variables.

Hey, thanks for this great video. Really helped. Could you recommend the best plugin for trying to emulate the 80s tape sound on Swedien albums like Michael Jackson’s Bad album? It has that lovely warmth and slight grittiness whilst keeping incredibly cohesive.

MixbusTV thanks, and definitely a more logical way to look at it. I am certainly using many different things to capture the sound like the Lexicon 480 but I was just wondering if a certain tape plugin would pull me closer to it. Makes more sense to try a few. Ty x

I didn't find that with any of the others. Try the Stephen mastering presets for 15ips and 30 and tell me your mix didn't take a step up.

Is there anything to be aware of / are there any dangers when processing the master L and R through the two separate Neve's with individual controls for each L and R channel (I assume they are mono and paired together for stereo) instead of say a dedicated stereo processor with single controls for both L and R? Hope that made sense. Great stuff :)

@@mixbustv I found U-He Satin can sound good if treated as an 'effect', but with small input increases, it deceivingly can over compress/limit the sound and dramatically increases the the integrated LUFS, noticeably on the Master Bus. Also can affect the EQ, by not enhancing the mids, like other good algorithmic/ convolution tape plugins do. Anyway, it's definitely still worth a try. Look forward to your opinions.
