I'm also careful if I have frequencies that are overlapping. Solo, the tracks can sound ok, but together they can add up certain frequencies. So the next step I do is side chain compression and EQ, then I analyze the whole thing on 2bus and I set it up to hit maximum -6.0dB. From there I can push it late on if I want.
I learn something every single time you speak! I would highly recommend everyone get a consultation with David because he helped me in multiple consultations and the information blew my mind and transformed the way I mix instantly. Well worth the investment! Keep shining man! 🙏

And I just came from one of your videos recommending this channel....bless up
There's no one, on KZread or else, who has given more or better information so consistently as you!
You make the perfect videos for the almost professionals who know what things are and how they work but might need a little more technique
David you definitely taught me the most of all the engineers on KZread. Your videos are always value!
I did a mix over the weekend in which was the first time I actually mixed into a compressor. My crest factor was ALOT closer than ever b4 and yet I still maintained all my transients!!! Thanks for all the good tools and advice brother!
Simply the best channel for someone serious about mixing and mastering! Really useful, subtle and professional advice.
I’m an artist and audio engineer from Toronto and this is my favourite channel ever! I enjoy all your videos they’re super helpful and fun to watch. Love you bro 🎶💯
Simply the best out there! This is gold
Just wow, simple, clear and straight to the point, this video should be shared and pinned on top of every mixing board

Thanks David! That comment you made about knowing which compressor to use to get a certain result on the mix bus..., detailing that would make a great video.
Such an eye opener video. Thanks David!
This is the single most important video I’ve watched on this. Thank you.

6:35 When he turned the lead vocal down I said nope that's too quiet but then he justified why he likes it that quiet and it's actually so smart! Thank you 🐐
Awesome content man. 👍🏼 Thankyou for the lesson. 🙏🏼

Great Vid as usual
You are a legend Dave this video and your channel works for any genre. I love rock/metal but I write darkwave electronic stuff. This has been helping me a lot 🤟🙏
Thank you , learning a lot with your vids !
Tip notch!
Super helpful as always, thanks man
I've been a professional musician for over 47 years, and a studio owner for 20+ years. Although certified by Pro Tools, I've had no formal training. Just trial and error. This is by far "the BEST" instruction I've ever seen or heard regarding balancing a mix. Without a good/proper balance, a mix engineer will surely be fighting himself throughout the entire mixing process to get the tracks to to "play well" with each other.
This is one the of the best "practical " Tips video about Gain Staging. Not for technical stand point but also how to apply in real life mix situation. Thanks for your kind effort to make this video
Thank you David, once again your explanation is right on with no bullshit.
Bro for many years m producing and i really got to a complete order of the mix casue of u!! no matter what ive learned on socials ths is by far the most helpful !! thanks man!!

I have a very similar hairdo currently. My wife says I look like an enraged owl. Love it.
Thanks man you always teach me so much. Didn’t even think to use the input of ssl for gain staging
EXELENTE !!! THANK YOU FOR SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US !!
Great info, I always start my mixes in a very similar way. Thanks for the tips
Nice levels - right on
Jokes aside. You are building your own dojo with these slices of pedagogical work. Thank you, honestly.
Excellent Video Bro ❤️💯💯
Superb David sir
Thank you for the video.. I like your training method..
Thank you, this tip worked very well
Very good advice
Thank you
Thank you big help 😁✌🏾perfecto 👌🏾💯
I never thought of doing a mix this way. Interesting. Thank you. 👍🏻
Thank you bro!!
Just wanted to randomly come by and say thanks again, Ive only just started doing automation in mixes. Thanks to you. Mixing this last tune has been much easier. For years, was a nightmare trying to get static levels and wondering why certain things are too loud for certain parts trying to find the perfect balance for a set and forget. No longer. lol.
Buying and starting to use analog gear while mixing is when I finally got gain staging ...because you have to, haha.

Same bro. It took some time to learn no gain staging causes alot of clipping and distortion xd
Youre a Gem bro
Well explained!
Amazing. Today I went to YT to find answers to questions like this, and here they are. The most important information that will help me a lot in the future is that when we adjust the instrument levels at the very beginning of mixing, it should actually stay that way, in terms of level-matching after eq and compression. By the way, even if I have been using the SSL native channel strip for a long time, I would like to hear your opinion about that plugin, especially the native SSL Bus comp. 2. I hope you will see this comment and make a review ... Kind regards Dave !!!
" I want the same exact level with and without compression". Right on.
11:20 I dig that "no makeup gain when setting the 2-bus compressor" approach !
Nice tee shirt man.....Love those guys! V4 is my go to outside kick mic....and sometimes inside if I can fit it thru the hole!
This is interesting. I gain stage, set up my rough mix with the faders then put on the bus compressor. But with the way you set up the rough mix and gain stage at the same time, I can have even more precision with the faders.
