    Great Stuff as usual David. Thank You as usual! Even after years, I am tempted to spend time trying to mix bass to be represented on small speakers (which still can be a great learning curve for developing "your" sound) yet the simplest tricks like this just usually work! Sometimes with Rock material, I use MaxBass on a duplicate track but take out the original signal with the MaxBass fader, that way I can sculpt or saturate Max bass and keep it low in the mix whilst keeping the original clean. It is also useful this way as you can use it however much and whenever in the song such as at the intro to pop before the vocals rather than creating more automation lanes!

    When I had small Kurzweil speakers, what I did was isolated my room with walnut wooden plates. Added few sponges forward on the wall and behind the speakers to fix phase shifts of refracting low frequency waves. The sound was best. Only thing I had to do is check from time to time the difference of the mix between the room and the headphones plus walking around to find a sweet spot where I can hear the best dynamic range. It came out that when I lay on the bed I could hear every possible detail :)

    I love the idea of using automation that you described towards the end of the vid. I'm going to try that on a snare I have that needs some help. If I fatten up the snare through the whole track, the rhythm sounds like it's in quicksand. I want it to dance, with grace notes etc, but it sounds a little weak the way I have its upper and lower mics mixed right now. So I'm going to try automating EQ/etc for the big *CRACK* in the intro and see if that fools my ears. May sprinkle more of that throughout the track in key places as needed. Thanks!

    Hey man! I have a question about using multiple compressors. If it is best practice to use multiple compressors lightly on one audio source (ex. vocals) then how many compressors is too many? For instance, if I have more than 2-3 on a vocal track, is it not a job for a compressor at that point or can you use more than 2-3 compressors on one track? Love the channel! I plan on becoming a member as soon as the holidays are over!

  • @bananermat3798

    @bananermat3798

    2 жыл бұрын

    There is no rule to this, use as many as you want. Some times (on very rare occasions) I'll have 5 or more compressors on a single track. It's all about what is each compressor's job, why did you pick that compressor and those settings, and in what order are you putting them. They will respond to each other, so this is key. Simple example: it's better to put one compressor at the beginning that deals with high peaks in the signal, keeping everything even, and then using a more "musical", broad strokes compressor after that, so that the slower, more musical compressor isn't overcompressing to those peaks that the first compressor is dealing with. Some times I might pop on a compressor that isn't compressing at all, simply because I like the color and saturation it brings. Some times, taking the time to painstakingly write volume automation over the whole track is a better solution than slapping on yet another compressor. Some times slapping on another compressor is fine. You can do whatever you want, even use no compression and only automate everything to perfection, it's all about how you find your own way to solve a problem and make a mix as good as you want. Just know why you are doing the things you do rather than doing something for the sake of doing it.

    Great videos as always my ? 30 ips saturation like from the neve 542 which will usually give u a 6o hz boost vs pultec eq or any transformer or colored eq 60 hz boost what’s better or your recommendation. I feel like I can’t boost too much low end on info on low end tracks and I have to cut the blend or saturation to minimal on master buss or hi pass at mastering to keep low end more under control later on . Feel not sure to where to pay attention to low end control more on individual tracks or the neve 542s as the 542 s can get heavy on low end

    You know what rock record I swear employs that “first down beat- full bandwidth” thing: RATM’s first album. I’ve always noticed that first hit of a big chorus, it’s like all the energy dumps out on that first 1. Could be some other tricks, but that record still feels huge to me, a perfect “pure rock band” mix.

    Question for rapid fire Q & A: What tricks to use for controlling the 808 in a Trap production/mix? The 808 is taking A LOT of headroom space in the mix and i want to turn up the volume (optimize) in the mix buss/master. If i turn the 808 down it looses the balance (which i like) with all the other elements. This problem is ocurring to me in just this style of music, is this the nature of the beast?

    low end needs alot of energy to make it listenable (as opposed to 3khz range for example) because of fletcher munson curves so you could just saturate (with parallel processing maybe) them to add overtones and to give it the right place in the mix, remember, 808 is basically just a single sine wave plus a click sound or so

    Honestly David - where did you learn that trick, only adding that Bass in the first hit? Andy Wallace maybe?? Surely you haven't come up with your million mix hacks all by yourself?? You WERE in that cave for years, weren't you?!

    Résultats de recherche Résultat de traduction Français Anglais Another thing that has nothing to do with this video. Why some very great engineers who even have big trophies do not take into account entry levels in plugins when they do their demonstrations and other topos? I can name names! It's as if they do not see the red! They look like color-blind people. Thanks for answering.
