You can CUT on a Mac. Copy the file (command+c) then paste it using option+command+v and it will delete the file on its original location.

Was about to say that! I think this is way more intelligent than using CTRL+X bc you can decide what you want to do with the file when you are at the destination directory and not have to decide before copying / cutting

Most important: 1. In System Preferences under Software Update uncheck "automatic Updates". 2. Never go for the latest updates (major updates). Hold back until the 3rd part devs give green light for their plugins to work correctly with the latest macOS. Have fun!🙂

Along with that - I don't know if things have changed - but when updating get the combo updater instead of doing piece-meal updates. Remember the old saying - those who live on the bleeding edge are doomed to get cut by it.

Yes, That's good advice. I always wait for about 6 months to update system OS to allow for that. Been on Mac since the early 90's and have I have lost almost no working time to computer error.Also never had an internal HD fail or any hardware fault...so far.

@@fuTuRo-Sonic The only time I lost work time was due to an Apple security update that bricked my machine.

I had a 2014 Mac Pro desktop (trashcan). In 2019 it crapped out so I took it to the Apple store to be fixed. They tried a number of replacement parts and fixes over several visits (the first visit costing me $750aus in parts) but the problem was never resolved. The Trashcan was 4 years out of warranty but Apple kept trying to fix it for no cost after failing the first time which was great but in the end, they finally gave up on it ever working... and then they did something remarkable. They replaced my dead out of warranty 5yr old trashcan with the latest iteration of the Mac Pro series, the updated 2019 model. The 2019 Mac Pro is worth almost 3 times the price of what the Trashcan cost me here in Aus. Apple had a courier drop off my new Mac Pro to my door a few days later and its been killing it ever since. Apple user for life here.

This is a good point for choosing Apple. What it also does is switch people around from telling the world that their Mac had major issues and instead praise Apple for customer service! Haha. All the problems with thoae 6 years of trashcan Macs are all forgotten! Crazy how reputation is created...

I'm a life long PC guy. I've got some music production friends work on Macs, so I have a little experience on them. At one of my audio jobs they got a new Mac M1. For such a tiny(form factor?) computer I'm really impressed with how fast it is. The Mac os just like iphones, could be considered smoother and more efficient with CPU usage. I've only seen one M2 Studio in person, and it's a true silent monster!! I don't own a studio or work at a purely professional level. So investing this much into a system isn't feasible. However!, I'm seriously bummed to hear the new intel CPUs and chipsets are causing problems. I'll be needing to build a new system at some point soon. I'm curious if there's a reason why AMD is not an option for PC audio production??. I know they're popular with gamers....I've never used them. Intel has some serious damage control to do, and some catching up with Mac!

The only (but not the least, the first) thing to consider is the price (especially the big difference of upgraded ram and ssd). In Italy costs even more than United States due to added taxes.

If apple priced their products competitively then there would be no Pc vs Mac fan boys. Used PC for 15 years before switching to mac for 13 years. Couldn’t imagine going back. Great video discussion/review. Welcome to the club mate.

Did you know the Ultra models have two Thunderbolt 4 ports on the front of the Mac Studio as well? So you also have 6 TB4 ports :) and a copper heatsink instead of a aluminum one!

I own a macbook but I do agree with you.

I switched from pc to mac about 10 years ago. Nothing wrong with either. For music production it made more sense for me.

Storage is a huge issue with Macs today .

My only problem with Windows is the USB issue you mentioned. If all you’re doing is engineer work that Mac is worth it for just working all the time peace of mind. As a hobbyist I couldn’t justify the price for those specs. But Apple hasn’t cracked the code to processing power = more heat issues, Apple just put systems in place to make sure their chips don’t max out. They don’t know more than Intel or AMD who have been doing this for decades. The other reason I stopped buying Macs is because my first Mac was a PowerPc that they discontinued which I lost money on. Apple will eventually discontinue M1 M2 and make you upgrade to M3 like they are doing with Intel Macs and like they did with PowerPC. You’d be lucky if that Mac is not obsolete in 5-6 years they way they move. Apple model is to make you buy their products every 1-2 years.

I also made the switch, recently. I was 24 years in windows audio and got a Mac system in April. The hassle of the drivers is a lot more minimized. I’m not quite as fast as I am in Windows yet, but I’m not running blind either. It feels more “stable”. You can work a bit more confidently with lower chances of a crash. Also, now I have the option of finally getting the McDsp APB.

Good for you! I switched about 12 years ago or so and never looked back. I'm in the IT field and the revelation there was I working on an older Mac developing an application and it had 4gb ram and it worked, and it was old at the time, but it worked maybe better than the a same spec older pc with 8gb of ram. That thing I developed on that machine has generated at least $200M for my company (not me). I have many Macs now, and you'll find that firing up a new and doing is a dream. If you do the thunderbolt transfer to the new machine, all your stuff is there and installed and the only problem is getting the licenses authorized, and it takes maybe a couple hours top to bottom. Regarding the hard drive prices, those drives are blazing fast. Like you might be getting 7TB transfer speeds on that internal drive, and good luck buying that and having it work with external drives. It's a bit of the same experience with their displays, like boy are they expensive to what you think you are comparing them too, , but they are kick ass. Regardless, good for you, and I hope the machine blows you away trouble free for a long time (I'm sure it will).

Why update the OS in studio enviroment? For better Wallpapers, A.I. Mail response, etc..? As you said, you use the studio computer only for ProTools.

Welcome to the family! I made the switch back in 2011 when I was still a network engineer. I always had problems with my Windows machines. The learning curve for the switch was fast. The problem with the hot processing was due to the older processor architecture. Even Macs had that problem with Intel processors. But then came the M1, and that was a whole different ballgame. Based on ARM processor architecture, every part works with efficiency, so you get the full package, and it delivers. Funny thing, ARM is coming to PCs again! While ARM processors have been implemented in PCs before-like in Chromebooks and the Microsoft Surface Pro X-the M1 has shown just how powerful and efficient ARM-based computing can be.

13900KS has been steady so far on win 10. Going to use this as long as win 10 works.

@@SamHocking maybe if using mac OS it would be... hackintosh rocks! ... but as long as windows is used, audio workflow is greatly impeaded and much of the same functions require far more lines of code and therefore much less efficient use of energy despite the speed on paper. Just look at the installer size of ProTools on mac and pc... very different! I've noticed the same trend, where the mac programs typically use less hard drive space for the same program, so we can assume there's less lines of code and/or less steps to perform the same tasks. Mac's operating systems just feel like they're better thought-though during the dev phase, and they also behave a lot more predictably. I love waking up with the same computer every day for years.... no need to "upgrade", and "auto update" turned off. It's simply bliss... (im running i7700k and mix huge sessions with zero threat to the CPU). So, in that my PC was built in 2016 and OSX breathed new life into it to the extent to where I have no need to mess with it... I'd say the operating system is quite a bit better-suited for audio stuff... I used to build new PCs like every two years! I don't think I ever built one that didn't ague with protools to some extent.

I've built PC's since the late 90's and quit after ~2018 after buying a used 2013 MBP to try out ($600) Now I run like five M1/2's for video and music. Never building a computer again. No advantage anymore. Mac's are truly plug and play.

Been a Mc user for years and years. Never had any real problem with OS upgrades, just make sure you subscribe to newsletters for your plugins and watch out for companies giving a heads-up when there might be an issue. No big deal.

Hi David, An interesting video. I'm very pleased that your switch to Mac has been so rewarding. I have been a Mac user for 30 years and have never looked back. The one thing I wanted to do was allay your fears about upgrades to OS. My current machine is a 2014 iMac, ten years old (so in tech terms, ANCIENT!) but, like yours, specced to the hilt. I have gone as far as I can with the OS for my processor and am currently running the equally aged Catalina - I can't go any further - but everything still works! It is only now that I am getting messages from one or two apps telling me I ought to upgrade my OS, but if I'm working in the box, there's no problem. The point is that your machine is an absolute beast, nicely future-proof, and your current OS will last you a very long time. I know each new OS comes with fancy features, but don't be intimidated; you won't NEED to change for years. Thanks for a great channel. All the best.

M2 cpu only upgrades to m2 pro with 10 or 12 cores(cant remember) going from m2pro to ultra or max just upgrades the gpu. so if you just do music production getting pro is the best bang for buck, if you also do video or 3D rendering or other gpu power work than you could upgrade the gpu aswell (so use the m2 max or m2ultra)

Been Mac with music + Logic since 2007...It's super convenient for everything music related and makes getting ideas out of your head and recorded as fast and easy as possible. Also, everything just seems plug n play with Mac...at least within Logic...hardware or software...it just works.

You probably render these videos a lot faster than before too, so I am sure that is a big time saver for you now!

Great choice !!! I bought my first computer in 2000, a Mac titanium laptop, and then bought the first version of the ProTools MBox. In 2022, I bought the Mac Studio M1 Ultra, and now have the ProTools MBox Studio. I make a new video every week, composing, playing, recording, mixing, etc. The Mac never kicks its fans up to a higher speed and is silent as a sleeping mouse. I am sure you will enjoy your new Mac !! Thanks for your excellent videos and great advice !!! Que va piano va sano y lontano!!!

also if your doing brig transfers sometimes its faster to just clone the drive in disk utility vs coping from one drive to the other

Switching to Mac years ago was the best thing ever - even a Pc that was spec’d out to be as stable for audio as possible still had all sorts of glitches etc , first Mac noticed all devices immediately and just ran , as others have said , wait or just don’t upgrade the OS untill all your gear is officially supported. It’s not like the next OS will have anything special for Audio .

I am currently using Windows 11 in my studio, and I am planning to buy a Mac Studio. I hope my transition will go smoothly. The video was great, but you repeated your statements several times, especially at the end of the video. I'd shorten it down a little. It felt a bit redundant. at the radio studio where I have working for 20+ yrs, we were on Mac, from a 3.1 power PC, that was only the recording unit on the 8 logic, everything was analogue equipment, to the latest update a couple of years ago the M1 mac mini which for our radio projects is more than enough. now I have a studio full of equipment covered with dust because plugins are so powerful and so easy to use. but I remember my mate's studio problems with windows. he was always messing with the system going slower and slower with time, due to registry faults that are accumulating over time, also the second problem was the viruses, almost to panic. every client came with its own USB stick that he was running through a laptop with one antivirus, then to another PC with another antivirus before plugging it into his working machine. he was reinstalling the whole system several times a year because it was impossible to use until he got pissed, and got the Mac OS Leopard!!!!! installed on his PC, then sometime later bought his own first Mac. old times stories but stick to the topic...)))) congrats on the transition!!!

I began a slow switch the beginning of this year... within a few weeks, my overbuilt PC got kicked out the room! My PC laptop was almost unusable when trying to work on a project. I'm standing by for the updated Mac Studio to release, but this M3 Max-equipped MBP is a beast!

the mac studio has a known problem with USB A ports , yesterday my ilok stopped working because the mac decided to stop giving power to the usb , its a voltage issue so i decided to get a usb hub with an external power 12v

Bro. You need to configure the new PC in order to work perfectly for real time audio process. It took me weeks to find the right BIOS settings and custom undervolt/overclocking settings. Now my PC is dead silent, no cpu spikes, super stable and can handle 30% more of vsts.

Hey David! My heart goes out to you man! I don’t have the set up you do by a long shot, but the frustrations (insert your own phrase) no matter what level, we all have our ups and downs with gear. If there’s anything positive about it, it’s that you find the community (eventually) that gets us to the next gear. Rock on!

Definitely you're right with Mac Studio. For big(ger) projects a Mac Studio Ultra may be the best choice. But for most people a Mac Studio with a mMax processor will be great. It's incredible what even my Macbook Air with 24gb Ram can handle... My windows Main Studio PC is only here, because there was no good deal on Mac Studio that time - and I wanted to build (DiY) some things...and maybe upgrade the Ram/graphics for DeepLearning things...but the haters will always hate and I always try to show what are the best things in both worlds - for some musicians/creators maybe the freeware situation is still an advantage + upgrading paths...(what really isn't necessary when having the "right amount" of Mac Studio - its awesome what raw power and efficiency comes with Apple Silicon)

Got the Mac Studio M2 Max Chip & Have the same DigiCal hub & I have had it for a few months now and is running much better than my MacBook Pro 💻 BigUps for the Switch but the Storage & Memory space you have is way more than what I have though! All the Best with the new setup 👑👊🏿✊🏿✌🏿👑

I switched to a Mac Studio in March and minus a few vsts I have to boot the old ball and chain up for from some old sessions, I"m never going back.

Welcome to the club, brother! I think you are really going to like it once you are used to it! I'm not trying to slight Windows at all... I know there are many people who do great work on that platform, but I have found that for ME... it's much easier for me to deal with any issues if things go wrong... and I just click with the OS much more. I've also found that often times the Mac version of a particular DAW just seems more stable. ENJOY!!!

When I got Pro Tools LE twenty some years ago, I bought a Sony Vaio to run it. I returned that computer in less than a day and bought a G4. I've never looked back.

When I ran an internet real estate consulting firm in the mid-1990's, I charged twice my standard fee if the client had a Windows machine. Seriously. I git complaints, but the number of hours of pain trying to get a client's machine to work drove me nuts. Most of my clients agreed in the end to pay the extra fee. I even would "charge" my dad extra for helping him with his Windows machine. When I finally convinced him to go with Apple, he was a totally happy camper, and almost never asked me to help him again with computer problems.

Congrats on the switch. Looks like a few people mentioned this, but you can use command option V to move whatever you want to whatever location you are focused on.

@@younggod-ws8py Same here. I've used the Sonnet with UAD2 PCIe cards for years. Works great. I even have my old Aurora 8 converter connected to the thru port of the Sonnet box using an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter.

Planning on switching too. I am dealing with the same USB issues as I have so many peripherals connected. Just waiting for the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips which are coming in the fall apparently.

@@GingerDrums Hey, I get that. For me. It’s more to do with future proofing and being eligible for software updates and support years down the line. Apple can be quite aggressive at times. For example, the 2017 macs no longer receive updates. Only 7 years old! The M1 machines are already almost 4 years old and the M2 Pro and Max systems are already at least 2 years old. The hope is they will support their silicon a lot longer than the intel stuff they did but you never know. I don’t want to be upgrading my Studio machine for at least 5-7 years after it was purchased.

​@@GingerDrums This is incorrect. You're probably talking about the video by James Zhan. His test methodology is super skewed toward showing that the M1 is better. The newer Pro Tools versions are able to utilize performance AND efficiency cores.The only issue comes with the M3, which has slightly less memory bandwidth (but still high enough not to make any practical difference with audio).

@@GingerDrums That video frustrates me to no end, you're good lol. He compared the M1 with 8 performance cores vs M2 and M2 processors with fewer than 8 p cores, even though ones with 8 p cores exist! It's a valid concern for lots of other DAWs that don't utilize efficiency cores.

Glad I’m not alone in this! I too recently went full hog on a windows rig for music production in Cubase and I just kept getting issue after issue after cpu spike crackle etc etc. switched to m3 max MacBook Pro and the Mac COMPLETELY outclasses my brand new *theoretically* more powerful windows rig. Especially stability wise. I also had ridiculous usb issues like you which were instantly solved by Mac. Oh and also the complete silence of the Mac compared to idle fans on my windows rig still sounding like a small generator in the corner of the room.

Congrats on migrating on Mac, Dave! I rarely use my M1 Air 16 (I am 20+ years on Mac's). Unfortunatelly I can't play games and train AI on Mac. And that "old" firewire devices definetely will not work on M1/2/3 type processor. Also my M1 Air has no HDMI or DisplayPort so I use Type C HUB with HDMI to connect it to my monitors (and I can't connect it to my 3 monitors), interesting how Mac Studio behaves with 3 monitors. Also lack of ability to upgrade Mac is frustrating. So I am still on PC for 1-2 years but time will tell, may be I will switch to Apple.

Don´t update the OS in a studio computer, you don´t need to! Serban Ghenea use in his studio pretty old OS´s. They will update only when some new plugins will not work anymore. Also the OS you got delilvered with the mac is usually the best and fastest.

I guess these days PC/Mac are very similar. A few years ago Mac's were in all professional recording and TV/Film editing studios. Macs were without doubt far more user friendly for creative artists and musicians whereas PC's were really for admin, offices, banks, shops, warehouses and accountants. TBH the only time you saw a PC in a pro recording studio it was being used as a wedge to hold the studio door open in summer... 🤣

That's not really true. Many edit studios used PCs for systems for editing, one called Wave something that used DSP cards. Pyramix is also extensively used in Film/TV. Nuendo is popular too and historically worked better on a PC, if not still. Sadie has also been popular in the professional world, especially broadcast. Pro Tools and Avid are the only reason macs are ubiquitous .. Logic is not really seen as professional enough a tool, nor any other DAW really .. It is all about Pro Tools and Avid (who bought out Digidesign) who were both historically tied to Macs because of the DSP hardware previously required .. But, it is true to say that OSX is easier to use for people who don't like computers and not so technically mindesd hence why many creative folks prefer Macs, including studio engineers .

Hello David, to reduce issues with newest OSes on Mac, just stay 2-3 OSes behind the latest one. That way, you’ll be able to work pretty smoothly and install newest plugins and so on, without major problems

Specs are at the beginning: M2 Ultra, 4Tb internal, 128GB ram. Samsung curved monitor (same I had before) via HDMI. You need a keyboard and a mouse (unless you have a compatible one like I did)

I did something similar only I built my PC 3 years ago and a few weeks ago decided to switch to an MBP. Loving it so far, everything is smooth and I have not been able to push it hard enough for the fans to kick in so it's dead silent in the studio.

As a professional, you don´t have the time to mess around with computers, it just HAS TO WORK. That´s why we are paying more for PRO gear

Welcome my dear brother, I build PC’s and work as an audio engineer and the exact same thing happened to me 13 years ago…

I’m having my backup harddrives replaced with NVMe4.0 M2 drives running in raid 2 so I have fast and very safe backups now. Still running on a Mac Mini but everything works flawlessly. I was thinking about building a new pc but after rebuilding a pc for my daughter I think I will stay on Mac for now, the whole Windows setup and drivers is a pain in the ass. 😊

Awesome! I switched when the m1 mini with 16 ram came out, and I really love it. Plug, and play. As long as everything is compatible it works great for music production. Im still working on it. Now I have been having to bounce to audio as my projects are pretty huge 4 years later. i can also recommend a anker thunderbolt dock. The owc you showed in other video should be great also.

Since you've switched to Mac now, would you consider getting the APB 16 for your current setup?

I have one at the other studio. I have a LOT of analog gear, and believe it or not, there are a couple of new units coming. Yet, I do love the APB and maybe not the 16ch like we have in the other studio but the 8ch is definitely a thought now.

i have an AMD 7950x3d, upped from a 5850x, it smashes and runs cold, its not like the intels that are boiling hot. Its on air too, jsut fine, no problems no latency. AMD doesnt usually have TB only some Mobos do, this one we have does and it runs two chained UAD apollo 16x jsut fine no issues. Peopel sleep on the AMD, there is zero issues with it in tracking or mixing. I will say, the old studio computer was a dual Xeon mac pro tower and it ran for waaaaaaaay past its lifetime lol. It was good for like a decade, tracking 32 tracks live at a time no probs no latency. If you are worried about a company not supporting your hardware then Apple isnt the place ot be. They will straight up not even support your PC with upgrades after awhile and they will drop connectors and other support no problem and wont care if people are mad. The old Mac worked fine, the reasons it started not working is because they didnt support it with OS updates.

I was a hardcore Windowssystem user for all of my PC-life. Build every Tower my own. Working on the creative side of things (Graphics, music and cutting). I switched. Not one moment of regret! No comparison how smooth things are running. With the ARMs CPUs the tides have changed.

Given that you love the Cmd+Space shortcut - which I also use 500x a day - it's good to know that sometimes Mac's go a bit crazy with the indexing of the spotlight search. My Mac has on several occasions gotten stuck in some kind of indexing frenzy where it eats up 90% of CPU power permanently while trying to index your hard drive, and one one occasion it literally forgot everything. Both times the answer is to Google how to shut down and reset the spotlight indexing and it fixed it. Good to keep in mind if your machine at any point feels like it's losing power and you're not running any software.. it might be the spotlight going ga-ga.

You can copy and "move",: copy first with cmd+c then instead of paste move with cmd+option(alt)+v, kind of being the same as cut and paste :)

As mentioned by other commenters, the safest bet in regards to OS updates is to leave it at least a version behind; it can often take some software (and/or hardware) developers up to 10 months to catch up to a new Mac OS. When I was running both a Mac and a Windows computer simultaneously, my saving grace for transferring and backing up files on external hard drives were a couple of programs from Paragon Software -- NTFS for Mac, and HFS+ for Windows (plus a version for the older Mac filing system). These enabled me to easily mount drives, regardless of how they were formatted, on either OS and seamlessly use them as normal. Always made switching computers a breeze.

Main obstacle for me to switch to Mac is its high prices. Other than that, I will do it

I've been using exactly the same machine you have with PT Ultimate HDX and AVID chassis. That thing is a beast.

Welcome to the brighter side of computer force! I made a switch 10 or so years ago after making my windows laptop a hackintosh. It gave me over 25% performance boost on literally the same hardware so there were no other choice for me ;) since then - no computer issues at all! BTW have you consider a NAS server to handle storage instead of all that external hard drives? it is in general a much more reliable solution

I switched 10 years ago. You won't look back. We even use an upgraded Trashcan in my A room at my studio and it's pretty rawking!

did you have an AMD or INTEL CPU? ...i'm on a new windows amd mini pc because it's the most affordable option right now but as soon as i can afford it i will switch to mac....i was never an apple fanboy but i know for music production it's the most hassle free ...maybe i'll use an mac as my main machine and a windows as a backup for producing, i heard there are also sometimes problems on mac after updates because some plugins need some time till they adapt like you mentioned

I'm a life long PC user and would never do the switch. I agree, the new intel systems have issues, that's why I use AMD for many years. I have a full AMD system cpu and graphic card. I hardly ever have any issue with my system. I built my system 4 years and it runs like a dream...FAST!

The best thing on mac is the core audio (Aggregate) and the security. I work on both plataforms but I prefer Mac.

No comparison one is a proper computer running a stable OS the other is gaming toy that looks like a Christmas tree and sounds like a hovercraft

The benefit of Macs: The “quality floor” is substantially higher. The benefit of PCs: You can both get a better system on an absolute basis and on a dollar-for-dollar basis… if you are willing to put the work in. In other words, if you just want something that works, Macs are a great option. Because of Apple’s integration and closed system, the floor is high. Things just work because Apple does the legwork for you. They make the choices for you. But if you want the best possible system, or the best system for the money, PCs are where you get that

The best possible system still depends on what you do with your computer. For example, there are Apple only software like Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro (which I use) where you can't run on a Windows machine. So no matter how good of a PC system you have, it won't matter if you can't work on it. Again, saving time and a lot of headache is worth going Mac for IMO.

Takes time to do the proper research, find parts and finally build the thing. Fun, but it costs time. I prefer the flexibility of the PC but I see the attraction of a turn-key system. As soon as you go off the beat path though, MacOS is just as finicky as Windows ever was. Then you have to rely on help from other users, which is what happened here. Both paths have their challenges. I picked mine just like everybody else.

The best possible system to me is one that works every time, looks like someone actually thought about the design so it doesn't look like shit and is intuitive to use, and is completely silent.

Best MacOS feature for creatives - quick preview anything with ’spacebar’. Amazing for quickly browsing through samples in folders, photos, readme .txts, excel sheets or basically anything.

What loved is the snappiness and then found latency was more predictable also.. as well as a lot better... you only really notice that is production when using midi instruments

The work around for cutting a file on mac is: (command c) =Copy and then (command +option + v) = cutting the file from it's original location and pasting it to the new location. Cheers

On my last Intel Notebook, I had to disable Turbo in order to use it for music. The problem of quickly overheating has been with Intel for some generations now. I would not buy an Intel based computer for music work anymore. For that reason I went AMD 5800H in my latest Notebook. Works very well for me. Does not overheat and throttle, even if you run it at high CPU loads. Your Mac is of course much faster and more powerful than my setup, so this would not translate 1:1 to what you need. As my projects are smaller and I use Reaper instead of Pro Tools, my lower speced setup workes like a charm. Good luck with your new setup!

You can totally cut paste. The difference is that you use Copy and Paste Special (Command Option V)

I've used both quite extensively and you make a lot of valid points here. What I truly HATE on macOS tho is the file management. You actually can "cut" (or "move" rather) files if you copy them first but then add a modifier key (either Shift or Alt...i mean "Option" lol) while pasting, but in general file management feels clunky af on Mac. Also, why is mouse acceleration on by default and we can't simply disable it in Settings? It has to be done with a Terminal command. Not to mention some basic customizations (including keyboard commands) are impossible without 3rd party mods. But overall I do wholeheartedly agree Mac is a more pain-free experience (and very much plug n play) for creative things. Aaaaand Apple silicon is pretty damn efficient. For those reasons I am considering making the switch once again...

Welcome to Mac! As a long time Mac user I would suggest staying in Sonoma for a while even when the next OS comes out (if Sonoma has an update stay up to date but stay in Sonoma). I have always made a practice of staying 1 macOS behind and it seems to work for me. All apps and plugins seem to maintain maximum compatibility. I'm still in Ventura (of course a brand new Mac won't run Ventura) and all my software (even the latest versions) work fine with no issues. I might even stay in Ventura until some of the software I run requires Sonoma. I run Logic and Pro Tools. The next Logic update might require Sonoma, so then I might update to Sonoma, otherwise, why update?

The good thing about investing in a bigger HD and RAM in your Mac is the swap memory read/writes will kill your SSD hard drive otherwise. Deffinately will increae the computer lifespan.

I empathise. I switched back in 2002 when OSX first came out. I took one look at it and decided instantly that it would be worth it. One week later, I knew more about the Unix architecture than I even did about Windows or DOS. Never looked back. Given the size of your studio, this seems to have gone pretty well : )

Did you try the tb2/3 to tb4 adapters or are they not feasible?

I bought a brand new M2 air 500/16 and seems a very well done product... No heat, no fans, lightweight, solid, great battery. The best laptops probably but they cost twice as a very capable win laptop. Using a hub almost for everything pisses me a bit.

D, get into using Notes on your Mac. You can screenshot and paste mix info into folders. I have a ton of notes from pro's etc. All that is backed up automatically to the cloud.

TURN OFF AUTO UPDATE!!!!!! OTHERWISE YOU WILL HAVE AN UNSTABLE SYSTEM!

True. After 30 years on Mac, I say it's a good idea. Update only when you want (usualy 6 months after the launch of a new OS, after 3dr parties udate their products)

Mac user for 25 years specifically for Logic...and the OS. I currently have a 2017 iMac that is still going strong and next will likely be a Mini. The new Mac studios are pretty dope but I think an M2 mini is perfectly fine for music production

As a Mac user I am almost always at least a year behind the most current Mac OS. By about a years time most 3rd party developers have caught up, which means you can recall old sessions if clients ever need you to.
