That splitEQ trick is 🔥🔥
Now this is a gem of a tutorial; one of the best I've seen because you actually show why we use these tools to fix problems in the mix. Great video 💯💯💯

This was a great demonstration, David! As I was listening to the mix I also thought "wow mix is really good - it's gonna be interesting to hear what can you do to improve it without the quality of it." And for sure - the improvement is very clear! Super cool lesson.

genius as always! I always try to learn something, not being a "professional", this type of problem can be discovered more easily Mixing with a clipper/Limiter? The snare really is one of the elements that varies a lot when trying to master.

Do not mix with a limiter. You spot these issues with experience and by training your ears.

Adding to what Dave said... I would focus on your playback system and room FIRST. You cannot properly assess and fix what you cant hear - and you cant possibly fix something you cant even hear properly from the first place. Doesnt have to be a trillion dollar system and giant room. Just get good sets of drivers, and decent resolution card, and then control your SPL and all the reflections in the room. Make sure you have a mono switch. Make sure you lower your SPL to fit your room resolution and avoid errors. You dont have to be a 'pro' you just have to keep learning and imporiving. We exist in a field where there are no true certifications of authority other than the sound that comes out of the speakers.

@@MrFox1111 Thank you for your words, I have really tried to do this, I basically work on my projects, having a full time job, I always try to learn, I buy my equipment and do what I like as a hobby, living in an apartment with a family is not easy at all having "time" to do what we like, at the moment I'm mostly using the Apollo Twin X and audeze mm500.

Hello David, I hope you are doing well. I am looking for a sound that I like, and although I know a few pieces that can provide it, some are out of budget or, like the Stamchild, you have to wait long to get it, etc... Since you mentioned the IGS 825 I wanted to ask you about the IGS Tubecore, how does it compare to the Stamchild or the Fairchild/clones weight in general, how about against the Dictator. Have you tried the Manley Vari mu? What would you recommend me for a tube/vari mu compressor to be used mainly in the 2 bus, and that it is 5K or less for a stereo/dual mono unit? Thank you!
@mixbustv

I never tried the tubecore but IGS makes great stuff. I'm not a big fan of the Manley MU. Dictator is amazing, but not necessarily the first choice on anything aggressive

Cool vid David! Had a few questions. Are you dithering before the hardware insert at all? I know some DAWs and probably some plugins that organize hardware inserts do it automatically. Do you ever use the transformer on the Fusion? I find that my masters can be a little dull without it even though I have a VSM-2 inserted before the Fusion and Brauer's Shadow Hills Compressor after with Nickel switched on. I'm not using Vintage Drive but I am using Violet, the HFC, Stereo imager, and the transformer. Have you tried the PQ plugin vs the hardware? They sound identical in the Audio Animals video where the input volume isn't pushed much. But another engineer showed me how the hardware does something special when you hit it with more volume. The plugin saturates too, kinda like Vintage Drive or The Black Box where it starts compressing the dynamics the more level you feed it. I'm curious about getting a hardware version. I use Basslane Pro after that to further edit the stereo image and then the Cedar Adaptive Limiter 2 for a final balance. But I'm not going for a lot of level. I'm try to aim for DR10 or higher without sounding too dynamic. Your DR7 master of No Sunshine is definitely one of the best DR7s I've heard. A ton better than some of the bigger names in mastering do for big name artists, definitely.

@@mixbustv Nice fella.
Hi David, I have one question about plosives. If the plosives in the original vocals are OK and not loud, BUT after compression those plosives become too loud it means that my attack is too slow and those plosives are escaping? The rest of the vocal sounds good and under control. Does automating a multi-band compressor only on those plosives would be the best solution to avoid affecting the rest of the vocal transients?
@mixbustv
6 күн бұрын
Not necessarily that your attack is slow, very fast attack on vocals is not a given. If you need and like the compression and sound you get and the only issue are the plosives you wither automate an eq manually, you use a dynamic eq or use RX de-plosive and all your issues are gonna be gone :D

Why are you so handsome???? Mog king dear god.
The only thing that distracts me in this mix is the snare sound. It's just too loud and ear-jabbing. I try to turn the volume up to hear more of the other elements, but the snare pokes through too much. Edit: I wrote this comment before watching the whole video.
