That is really interesting. Just to clarify my understanding, they prescribe drugs for illnesses that you do not yet have, basically giving you a rolling pharmacy? Also, how do they deal with expiration of those drugs - do they send you refills?

Yes, We have all the basic antibiotics and other RX for most common issues for travels. It's a one year plan, when you renew you can update what needs updating. We are so new to it we haven't had to address that yet.

I worry about border crossing/fed checkpoints with prescription meds

We had that concern also. We have now crossed seven borders since January with these med kits and had our van searched multiple times. The med kits are visible and no one so far has even asked about it. They aren't at all concerned about this and in many Latin American countries you can buy the same medications without a prescription so they have no concern with this. They are more interested in our walkie talkies than and prescription drugs.

What challenges did you have with your regular health insurance? I've been on the road for three years and have yet to have a problem getting the care I need (including removal of melanoma from my face and back) in any state with coverage just like I had in my home state. I'm not originally from the US and had single-payer healthcare until my early thirties, having lived in the US for the last 20+ years, the healthcare system here still baffles me, it's maddening that the level and availability of care can be so different from one person to the next. This does look interesting though, and could be very useful when I make my own journey on the Pan-American. Thanks for sharing.

We had to be in our home state for our insurance to work and we were never there. Often we are out of the county. If we are away or insurance won't cover anything. So we end up negotiating self-pay and still paying a very expensive insurance premium. It's really the number one issue we have right now, and we are relatively healthy. This Duration kit is going to allow us to get the basic help and medications we need no matter where we are. It's really exciting for us.

This is a really cool way to prepare for extended travel outside of the traditional US ‘network.’ How quickly can you get to the doctors online for consultation?

It really is. They are supposed to respond to us within 24 hours. But thankfully we haven't been sick yet and had to test it. They were very prompt in setting this up and with the pre-consultation.
