The Washington Scablands are a MUST Visit for Overlanding, Camping, and Exploring

The Scablands of Eastern Washington were shaped by one of single most cataclysmic events in Earths history. My aim on this mini overland trip was to explore this incredible area, find new trails, camp on top of a cliff and (most importantly) tell the story of what happened here.

This video was a bit of a passion project for me -- especially the story-telling and documentary aspects of it. I know it's a bit of a departure from "standard" overland videos, so I hope you all like it! Let me know in the comments whether or not you want to see more videos like this one.

The issue I have is you never specify exactly where every location is. Do you expect people to jump in their car and search for your locations? You don't even say this location is off highway or it's x miles from town.

This is North Central Washington. Southeastern would be like Palouse Falls or places farther south of Moses Lake. You should watch some of Nick Zetners videos, there are some relatively new theories about Moses Coulee and placement of the erratics through out this area. Oh, and the wind finally broke yesterday and it’s gorgeous out..I live where I have an epic view of the North Cascades to my west and what we call “The Wall” to my east which are huge basalt cliffs that overlook banks lake.

You're right about this not being SE WA, though the Scablands seem to feature predominantly n SE WA. I'm excited to check out that area, knowing what I know now. Sounds like you've got some amazing views from your place. The wind in the Vantage area is no joke .... my poor mic stood no chance haha.

I live just outside of Tacoma and grew up here, and it never cease to amaze me how different the west side of the mountains are compared to the east side. It's funny that they call WA the evergreen state when such a huge portion of it is desert and farms. I love the eco diversity of this state.

Happened onto your interesting video... being born and raised in Yakima... recognized your trip over Snoqualmie Pass through Ellensburg, Vantage and out onto your scenic camp spot among the cliffs over looking the coulee. Another location that you might want to checkout if ever in the area is Palouse Falls. A bit isolated, but interesting in itself. Yes, eastern Washington does have some uniquely interesting and scenic locations. Thanks for your sharing your great drone views and narration!

Calling that South Eastern Washington is a bit of stretch but the history is pretty amazing. Great job telling it all. I learned about glacial lake Missoula in school and it's fascinating. Once you know about thay, the while state looks different. Seeing house sized glacial erratics on hilltops in Portland that are rocks from north Idaho, and Montana seems crazy.

Yeah, that's fair. The Vantage area is definitely more 'Central WA' .... but the Scablands (in general) seem to be more prominent in SE WA. I totally agree with you that once you learn their story, you look at Eastern WA in a whole different way!

Just about ten miles north of where you camped in Frenchman Coulee is one of my favorite spots in all of eastern Washington, Quincy Lakes Wildlife Area. Next time you're in the area you should check it out. There's both an upper area above the dual coulees where there is plenty of camping and a series of lakes -- Stan Coffin, Quincy, and Burke Lakes; and Evergreen Reservoir -- and a lower area in the coulees that is a favorite with backpackers with more lakes; Ancient and Dusty Lakes. Both upper and lower areas have lots of hiking trails through spectacular scenery, and more waterfalls.

Spokane native, and a photographer. THANK YOU for your work…. I understand why people get upset when we reveal locations while scouting, but at the same time, I can’t Thank you enough for sharing. I do a lot of local research featuring the positives of the PNW to educate, and share it through my photography. Alas, my back and knee are starting to protest so I’m starting to follow you guys for help. I do what I consider “ninja style” shooting, so I’m in and out quickly out of respect. I don’t want to get in the way of others and obviously don’t want to encourage overcrowding. However. Who am I to keep others from enjoying this gorgeous planet. PS. I did a quick scan and see discouraging comments from people who like to flex. Ignore them. Keep doing you, if your info is slightly off, smart people will figure it out on their own 😉.

I do understand your point. It is the reason i never give coordinates to any campsite i stay at (despite being asked all the time to do so). With that said, we seem to have a very different perspective on the matter. Some people have a certain sense of entitlement and feel that public land should only be for themselves. I believe there is an abundance of public land, and there is PLENTY of it for those who wish to enjoy it (responsibly). And when I sat plenty I mean plenty of it where you can camp and have no one around. The spot in this video never has been, and never will be, one of those spots. To each their own, I guess.

I enjoy your videos, but perticullarly this video and all the history/research that you relayed. I'm always facinated with the geology and as an Oregon native who grew up in the Oregon Scablands (never knowing that's what they were called) always wondered how they were formed and why though they were similar looking to other Canyons areas, just had a little different "feel" about them. I haven't explored that area, but now that back in the PNW (Spokane) I will definitely be checking out that area Thanks!

Another fun fact is that the waterfalls that created Grand Coulee was 800 ft high, twice as high as dry falls. It doesn't exist anymore because it eroded itself all the way through the basalt rock up to the Columbia River Valley. Just picture what dryfalls would look like if it had eroded all the way up to the Columbia River Valley, instead of only half way.

Not sure what size tires a stock Sequoia can fit, but 100's can handle a 33" on stock suspension with no rubbing. That's like a 1.5 inch lift over stock

@@WheretoNextOverland The area north of Sprague and south of Spokane is dotted with these ten or twenty foot tall, steep-sided, flat-topped rock formations generally of a few acres in size, many with pine trees on top. I'm from Portland but I frequent the gorge amphitheatre every year, a long with central Washington, central Oregon and NE Oregon. I have an overlanding question more so related to vehicle type to getting outdoors more. I'm currently car shopping and have been looking at a new 2024 RAV4 hybrid. Something for a daily driver and something I can build out to take out over the weekend. Would a RAV4 hybrid be suitable for mostly dirt roads, some logging roads and overlanding camping off grid away from state parks and campgrounds? Or should I consider an all gas vehicle to get me there? I'm just concerned being hybrid it would be underpowered to get further outdoors where I want to go. But given the price and primary use of the vehicle is why I'm drawn to it compared to a Tacoma or 4runner.

  • @WheretoNextOverland

    @WheretoNextOverland

    2 ай бұрын

It all depends on your use-case and how deep into the backcountry you want to get. A RAV4 Hybrid should be plenty capable for the majority of forest roads. Not until you start encountering bigger rocks / ruts / mud are you likely to have problems. It won't really be for a lack of power though. You're more likely to be hindered by things like ground clearance, traction and articulation. That's what trucks like Tacomas and 4 Runners give you (along with a 2 speed transfer case) that something like a Rav 4 doesn't. But if you just want to get out on forest roads and so some dispersed camping, a Rav 4 will probably do just fine!

When we thought we had found our campsite we ended up not staying and went further as the burnt out truck and beer drinking denizens of NCW were looking at our rig and gear like they were hungry for it. When we got home I deleted all the video we had taken I was so taken aback. This year is shaping up wonderful too. Whooping cough outbreak, RSV, Flu, shootouts, gang warfare, and so much 'skimmer activity'' the police have put out a warning to not use a debit card at gas pumps because they can't get a handle on the crime. Oh and the non too friendly people at the stations and store were enough to never recommend the area to anyone ever again. Oh yeah. Grant Co sheriff also advise that you don't go to an ATM alone and to avoid them after dark if you can. The one Deputy we talked with was empathetic but, obviously didn't want to speak badly of the area, "Going through a rough patch right now." Swell place. You are doing wide format wrong. Do not render out at 16:9 with the video at a different ratio which will create ugly black bars on ultra widescreens. Render out at 21:9 or whatever ultrawide format you are going for. Adding black bars actually screws this video up royally on my 21:9 monitor and does not let it render at the proper resolution. I appreciate what you are going for here, but you unfortunately messed up on the output. If you render at say, 3440x1440 your video will fill an ultrawide monitor beautifully. And on a standard 16:9 screen it will still have the ultrawide look as KZread will add the black bars for you. Hope this helps for the next time.

Hmm, interesting. Honestly, hadn't ever considered / realized the effect on ultra-wide monitors. The black bars are intentional and added as an overlay in editing as a stylistic choice.
