Ukrainian Assault On Russian Position With Proper Use Of BMP-1 Near Soledar - GroPro Helmet Cam

A very interesting GoPro helmet cam video from the area around Soledar shows a Ukrainian assault on a Russian held treeline under the cover of a Ukrainian BMP-1.
In the clip you can see the soldiers working together with the vehicle communicating with it via radio to advance under the cover of the BMP-1 73mm gun.
It is very interesting to see the BMP-1 in one of its intended roles namely to support and cover the advance of infantry.
The video was originally released on telegram by the SLON_FM channel.

Obsolete as far as tanks go, but the BMP 1 is not a tank, it's an armored personell carrier. 73mm is perfectly fine for infantry support.

If he had not surrendered and was unpinning a grenade, he was not a POW but still an enemy combatant and therefore subject to being shot dead. No time can be given to someone who has a grenade -- you can't take the risk. Same with soldiers who surrender and then pull a pistol. It's war, and soldiers aren't cops or riot police.

A medium Grey, not really super, super, dark, nor considered light by any means. Exception being Africa Corp vehicles that had all gotten a factory applied sand color (Or they showed up to Africa grey & then got camo'd with splotches/stripes of Sand Yellow.... In '42/'43 They forewent Grey all together & substituted Dark Yellow/DunkelGelb (RAL7028). I don't think I'd want to stick that close to an armored vehicle. Yes its armor will stop small arms fire just fine, but it is conspicuous and every anti-tank weapon the enemy has will be pointing at it. Not to mention that in order for a full team or squad to closely follow one armored vehicle they have to bunch up, which makes them vulnerable to mortars, artillery, or small arms fire that opens up from an unexpected angle. It provides an illusion of safety, not real safety. Tanks/IFVs and infantry do need to work closely together, but that doesn't mean they need to be physically right next to each other. The job of a tank or IFV is to provide firepower, not physical cover.

Yeah it pretty much seems medieval tactics. I'd argue they are using the tank wrong. (and I have mechanized inf training) BMP's are capable of carrying infantry inside they could use artillery to the position (every company should have at least mortars available, especially when having superiority against the enemy) And with the firesupport of artillery they could push faster over the field inside the bmp to prevent rpg shooting easily the BMP from the positions.

I did not know that you needed to give them time to surrender. It's an actual attack on a position of an attacking nation. Attacks don't work if you pass the defender of the position time to prepare and react to your attack. They demand that you put your life on the line because they might want to surrender. Is this for real? The Russian soldiers choose to be there, and decide to fight. And you have to react fast or die. A rule every soldier knows. You have to be faster than the enemy. The Ukrainian soldiers did nothing wrong. And in my eyes, the Ukrainians have every right to shoot every Russian soldier on Ukrainian ground for the sole reason that Russia is attacking and the Russian soldiers are consciously fighting and attacking them.

Very different ideologies. Japan was defending its homeland, just like the Ukrainians. They would happily gives their lives to honor and defend their country, and they did. That's not comparable to Russians being lied to and forced to partake in a useless war.

For my Americans here, it's like when a cop is arresting someone and they are not complying. If they are being erratic and pose a threat, the logical course of action is to neutralize the threat. Of course in America, the cops have non lethal means of incapacition like tazers. But this is war. The difference between ukraine and Russia is, once ukraine takes prisoners they are treated decently. On Russias side, they commonly execute prisoners who have already surrendered. Big difference there. I don't necessarily blame Russians who have shot Ukrainian soldiers who weren't 100% compliant when surrendering, but shooting pows who are already captured is definitely a war crime

Its not a paintball game soldiers are not obligated to give the enemy a chance to surrender, if surrender is offered they have an obligation to accept. The videos said they shot a POW but right after said he was prepping a grenade, POWs do not prep grenades only combatants prep grenades. And if you are going to surrender it would behoove you, to take off your helmet combatants wear helmets civilians and POWs do not. If you don't want to be a target make an effort not to look like one.
