UK passes controversial immigration Rwanda bill | BBC News

UK Parliament has passed PM Rishi Sunak's flagship Rwanda bill, after a late-night sitting and months of wrangling.
Plans to send some asylum seekers to Africa have met with fierce criticism, but the bill passed on Monday when the Lords dropped their opposition.
Sunak said in a statement "nothing will stand in our way" now of getting flights off the ground.
But the scheme could still be held up by challenges in the courts.

Anyone boarding a flight to Rwanda from the U.K. has a one way ticket. If the U.K. doesn't want those people arrest them, deport them and ban them from entry. Why is the U.K. putting on this show when everyone knows it's just an expensive way to deport people ?

It's a roundabout way to say "Look, we messed up when we made the original asylum laws and international laws century/centuries ago. We never thought millions of people will from poor countries will pack up their bags and arrive at our shores for economic migration, mixed in with people who actually urgently need asylum. Since deporting is illegal without processing their application first, which can take years, so we reduce the burden by using Rwanda as the intermediary host." Anyone genuinely seeking asylum won't mind waiting in a safe space in Rwanda but anyone seeking economic migration won't want to be stuck in Africa. Hence the deterrent.

I don't know why nobody is talking about the financial incentive for Rwanda. The current government budget for Rwanda is $4.4b. Lets say Rwanda takes 50 000 migrants initially as planned that means for the initial batch Rwanda may receive up to $10.5b which is almost two and a half times the government spending. This is the new form of human trafficking. The only difference is that its done by a government.

I live in Australia. When we pushed the boats in 2012 our government copped a lot of international condemnation and were threatened with all sorts. However they sticks to their guns and would not be bullied by others telling them to run our country. It’s the only solution that’s had a modicum of success. But what happening now is people are arriving by air with visitors visa and a return ticket and then having the temerity to claim asylum once here. Also only a couple of months ago we had 2 boats arrive in the northern part of West Australia. The people were mainly from Pakistan. It seems that the government took the eye off the ball in terms of border control, and cut funding ! But that could cost re election at the next election. I have been here 35 years and have admired the Aussie government but the current one is the coming up short!

They refuse to return to Rwanda for safety reasons, many are even embedded in Ugandan settlements and have been there for generations. So its bizarre that it would be a destination for refugees. Why can't they peacefully collect its people scattered in settlements and camps across the world and house them in those hostels.

The harsh reality is that Western countries cannot solve all the problems of the world. Resources are finite and the future unfortunately seems bleak with regards to uncontrolled migration further worsened due to climate change and economic instability in 3rd world countries.

500 million pounds well spend, plus 200k for each person deported. I'm happy for you in Rwanda, you made the contract of your lifetime. It's better then owning the largest gold mine in the world. Best thing is that you can just send the people right back and get another 200k pounds when you take them in again.

But where to get weapons? In France (in my beautiful country haha ^^) or in the country of Uncle Sam who wants to maintain his leadership everywhere even to the detriment of his own allies (I am thinking, among other things, of the submarine affair with Australia)

  • @ChrisKeziahHyde

@@45Shameek I get the EU has it's problems but what does that have to do with the ECHR which is my original point? I don't think a European army will ever happen, purely because NATO serves that purpose already and is an alliance of countries many of which are from the EU. The worst thing we did (Brits) is leave the EU instead of trying to improve it. Bureaucracy has it's flaws but that's where if we elect people with the right attitude and mindset we could've improved a lot of the bureaucratic flaws. As for weapons, don't France already make a lot of it's weapons and doesn't rely as heavily on the US? France's nuclear deterrent is probably the most insane in the world but it works.

On top of the 500m already spend will be 200k per person that will be deported. But of course the UK is swimming in money these days after leaving the EU and not needing to pay money to the EU, so it's easy for the UK to spend that money, the UK got plenty. I heard the UK was thinking of giving each citizen 200k but then decided to just pay 200k for every person they are deporting because they like immigrants more then their citizens.
