UK blood scandal: Victims await report into HIV and hepatitis C infected blood treatments | BBC News

The final report of the public inquiry into the UK's infected blood scandal will be published on Monday.
More than 30,000 people were infected with HIV and hepatitis C, from 1970 to 1991, by contaminated blood.
The scandal has been called the biggest treatment disaster in NHS history, with victims campaigning for years.
Some of the treatments were imported from the US where blood was bought from high-risk donors such as prison inmates and drug-users.
One victim said any potential apology from the government "won't bring back the dead".

In 2022, the United States' export of blood products alone has created a value of US$43.1 billion, which is only US$8.5 billion less than semiconductors. With 5% of the population, it exports 70% of the world's blood and provides 94% of the world's paid plasma. The main blood providers in the United States are actually private prisons and drug rehabilitation centers in the United States. Coupled with the current social and drug situation in the United States, one can imagine the quality of these blood products.

TO take-in SOMEONE ELSES blood, is CREEPY! The LIFE of a person FLOWS THROUGH their blood. When you have a blood transfusion, you take in that person's LIFE, and you become a HYBRID, of sorts. No longer are you just ONE PERSON, but TWO or THREE or MORE!. Blood transfusion is a SINFUL DESPICABLE process. It should be BANNED!

Because here in America, AIDS has again become synonymous with homosexuality and it's become a nightmare of a political issue AGAIN. There's states (Florida) that PREVENT teaching students about AIDS. It's incredibly stupid, politically driven BS. (If you're not going to teach students about AIDS in a state with the most rehabs, halfway houses and pill mills, don't get mad when they pick up a dirty needle and get HIV THAT way.) They're failing to teach them about a sexually transmitted disease that isn't exclusive to the gay community! Might as well not teach them about any other STD. I'm shocked that there's so many people today who are totally clueless about HIV/AIDS. I grew up in the 90's. We all knew by then it was a virus spread through blood and sexual contact. You couldn't get it through casual contact. People today are beyond ignorant. It's extremely sad.

People, if you're having a scheduled surgery and are healthy enough, be proactive and take action early on and ask your doctor for an autologous blood donation. Your blood will be taken and saved for you after surgery. You got to do it early enough though so your body can replenish before surgery like 1-2 months prior surgery.

The entity also handed me a yellow manilla folder and said “like that time when I cured you and your husband from AIDs.” I opened the folder and it was blank, no medical record of AIDs or HIV. I thought that dream was strange but can’t help but wonder now. Only God knows what these medical people do behind the scenes.

Same in the US actually. That’s not because of this. They test for this. In the US now you can’t donate blood if you have a history of IV drug use and for a while you couldn’t if you were a gay man, although that’s changed. In China, they give transfusions from blood from prisoners and just give you a prep kit that prevents HIV transmission in the event that the blood is tainted, yet those have terrible side effects. The reasoning though for this rule is because of mad cow disease not because of HIV. All blood is tested now.

This sounds like the Tuskegee study which saw some 600 African American men who were recruited into the study for 40 years. They were not told the exact purpose of the study. The most horrendous part being the fact that they were denied treatment even when medication was developed. Most of them died needlessly. So much wockedneess!

As an American, I'm further disgusted with, disappointed in, & absolutely appalled by my own nation. My deepest apologies & condolences to all affected by this. What an absolute outrage & total evil. And knowing that health officials around the world wanted to keep it quiet rather than listen to those who knew something was wrong?....I have no words. Reminds me of the nurse who was killing his patients- they sent him from hospital to hospital, dismissing him on bogus claims because no one wanted to deal with the "headache" of having to take moral, legal, or professional responsibility for the fact that a serial killer was operating freely without anyone's knowledge. I see just the same wickedness in this news story. I hate to say that it's not a surprise they've been fighting for recompense for decades. The higher ups typically don't care until it happens to them. And even then, they just want justice & solution for themselves, they rarely care if it comes for others.

I echo every sentiment of this. I wasn't alive back then. But knowing that this was intentionally being done makes me even more ashamed of our country's past. Even now, I'm ashamed of how this is continuing to affect innocent people decades later, that the U.S. has issued no formal apologies, that there has been no compensation given to the victims and their families, and that many of those responsible are likely still walking free when they deserved to rot in prison for the remainder of their lives.

"Isn't he very young to be gay!". There are thousands of others too, like Lee Turton who suffered so much during his short life. I never thought I'd hear of a scandal worse than the post office, but this is something on a completely different scale. Wishing peace and comfort to all those affected, although I know that will never be fully achieved.

The same problem here in Portugal. It was HIV-infected blood purchased from an Austrian laboratory in the 1980s because we didn't have enough from our donors. The blood and derivatives went to a Pediatric Hospital and were used mainly in hemophiliac children. Many of them have already died, I know one of the survivors. But the then Minister of Health and a few other people were in court in the early 2000s, and the families had legal support from the Portuguese Hemophilia Association. Even so, it was considered too late, the legal process had started in 1994. Why only now in the UK?

But I just checked and indeed the first blood donor blood tests were approved in the us in 1985 !!!! 😐👀 which means prior to this it was just a free for all.. then considering whenever other countries decided to start rechecking for due diligence before using themselves ... just a catastrophe omg. And in the UK it says it started in October 1985 ....sooooo I still think they were all in cahoots. I think the UK failed their people here because they didn't do their due diligence by stopping all active donations and starting to check from fresh!!! Looks like they just decided to finish up the already available batches first !!! I had a feeling this is what happened. They just didn't care about their people enough tbh

There is evil amongst us & most people don't even see it, or choose not to out of fear! Hopefully one day the general population will wake up & realise this is a spiritual battle of epic proportions. Best to listen carefully to those trying to warn you about these scandals & support their voices rather than help suppress them when they sound the alarm. These families have been left completely & utterly devastated and this crime is beyond evil.

From the US: This staggered me. I was a senior medical tech for years. We test every unit donated, even if the patient is donating to themselves in advance of surgery. We don't accept gay men's blood even if they are virgins; we never accept transmen's blood because American stigma assumes that all transWOMEN are working prostitutes, and we can't tell the difference. I always knew plasma donation was different, and was used for cosmetics among many other things, but this ... oh, God.

Encourage HIV testing in Britain. Why isn't this done? It's not just the people who were infected years ago... It's all the people they spread it to. Does the government not want to know how many people were affected? It's not about compensation and apologies... It's about tracing infected people, treating them and jailing those responsible.

Even when blood is tested it may still have transmissible viruses because it takes a certain "viral load" (enough number of viruses) for the tests to detect. That is why screening (verbal and written) questions are still a part of potential donor procedure. And that takes honesty on the part of the potential donor when relaying info about their personal sex life and IV drug use. Plasma donors are paid, so potential plasma donors have more incentive to be deceptive.

There is no pay for that, its volunteering effort & if you donated for many times the hospital will give special gift, that all. Before the donation, people need to do health screening test. So no need to import the blood from other country.
