Two more excellent reasons why you really need a caravan - yessssss! | Auto Expert John Cadogan

Caravanning - in case you’ve spent the past few decades with your brain in liquid nitrogen - is a serious mental defect. One of the worst afflictions a modern petro-sapien can suffer.
Those who find themselves cursed by the ‘Big C’, as it’s known in med school, can be seen towing their over-priced acoustically transparent aluminum containers of their own effluent behind enormous off-road chariots somewhere ‘out there’ on the road to Nowhere.
Never approach a caravanner in the wild. The condition is thought to be quite contagious. Before you know it you’ll be stroking your ZZ Top beard and nodding sagely over your blue-singleted beer gut and making plans. That’s how the first symptoms appear. And then it’s all over.

The difference between a caravan and a hotel room is that in a caravan you sleep on your own mattress, use your own bathroom, kitchen and appliances. In a hotel room, you sleep on a mattress and pillows that hundreds if not thousands of other people slept on, with their bodily fluids, skin cells and sweat soaked into them. The toilet is basically a public toilet, and any kitchen appliances and plates, cups etc, are often washed in the bathroom/toilet. I doubt that even 5 star hotels change the mattress and buy new linen for every new guest. Not many of us are famous pop stars who can demand a new mattress when we stay in a hotel, but, we have the option of sleeping in a clean caravan, whenever, wherever we want.

I was nearly afflicted with the big c but once we did the sums it was so much cheaper to drive to the caravan park And rent a park donger We have a nice drive at normal highway speed no stress on the wank Mobil A good shower and night sleep and put our stuff into the ute and carry on It just requires a bit of forward planning and paying but works for us And saves me at least two grand a year in caravan costs So we now spend that 2k on trips around the state 😍😍👍👍

There is a reason that performance "tuning" used to be called "hotting" up. If there is no damage to the valve springs or collets, my guess would be excessive heat has caused an exhaust valve and guide to pursue a more intimate than usual relationship with one another. Sticky business, if you ask me. Not satisfied with the relationship with the valve guide, the valve has then banged the piston (or vise versa) and attempted to escape from the scene only to be stopped by two burley bouncers colloquially known as intake valves. By the looks of it, the intake valves have put up a good fight and probably subdued the exhaust valve but not without the expense of significant personal injury. $30,000 for the repair bill might be optimistic depending on the extent of the damage. I know someone who did similar damage to their Toyota V8 (also "tuned") and the vehicle was written off after he received three quotes in the mid forty thousand range. Hopefully the fellow really likes caravanning as he is probably going to be living in one for quite a while now, albeit, stationary.

The only times I have seen valve damage in a diesel is after over revving on a heavily laden descent. As a side note, I broke a valve spring in a 186 ci HT Holden. I drove it a further 60 or 70 miles to get home. The valve just went up and down with the piston. A new spring from the wreckers and it was all good.

John, how hard would it be to design an outside dunny for a caravan and have it 3 metres hanging out the back cantilever style. Combined with the windmill on the roof it would give that traditional outback look to make it stand out from the crowd of aluminium boxes. A swimming pool on the roof would not only contribute to making the caravan less dependant on the car for handling, it would take away the island holiday envy. I leave the engineering details to the experts.

I sold cars/trucks in San Diego 20 years ago. When someone asked for a recommendation for a tow vehicle, I would ask them what they are towing. 3 out of 10 would tell me what kind of trailer (Caravan) they had and could rattle off all the weights (dry, wet, tongue, puntang island magazines stashed in a hidden compartment...), number of axles and type of hitch they use/need. I could have these people out the door with the right vehicle in about 2 hours. The other 7 would either say I haven't decided which to buy yet or say " I don't know, but it's not that big..." For the people that had no clue, I would kindly ask them to get a clue before coming back. For the ones that hadn't bought the trailer yet, I'd tell them to buy the trailer first. I could sell you a truck that can safely tow anything from 2 - 15 metric tons. Pick the trailer that you want and we can match it with the right truck.

Sometimes valves do just break for no reason. Can't comment on the Landcruiser, but I've had a 6 cylinder Isuzu engine (170 hp 6bf1) do the same thing. The engine was imported used from Japan and then put on a stationary pump unit, probably has 20,000 hours on it now. One morning the engine was down to 5 cylinders, but it was still running, a quick removal of the glow plugs found one cylinder had no compression. Removed the engine head to find the head had broken off the exhaust valve for that cylinder, which had then bashed around for a bit before getting jammed up into the valve seat...luckily the cylinder sleeve was fine. Got a used head (complete with valves), and a piston and rod from the local importer for a couple of grand and had it running again by the next day.

About 20 years ago I had a work Ute, a 70 series Toyota drop a valve onto a piston causing initially a loud clattering then a engine stop. It had done about 20,000 km at that stage and turned out to be a batch of weak valve springs that caused the valve to bounce and eventually shatter the stem. It was replaced under warranty. I believed a few other utes at that time also had the heads replaced for the same reason. I would have said a head gasket was the most likely culprit in the video, possibly caused by previous overheating incident which I have also managed to do in years gone by. Recently I had the valve stem guide in my Jabiru (6 cylinder horizontally opposed air cooled aero engine) move and allowed the top of the piston to contact the underside of the valve. Valve springs, collets, guide in perfect condition. Just not where it was originally designed to be. Bottom line, if it can happen to someone, eventually it will and not necessarily the owners fault.

How about a failed head gasket? Water comes in a bottom dead center spraying on open valves and cooling them suddenly. Different engine and different century but I saw something a bit like that. It was the best theory I could come up with.

HA! Yes I've seen that exact failure in an LC 4.5 D4D. Way back when a good mate worked in a Toyota dealership one came in with "a rattling sound and a bit of smoke". He gave me a call one lunch time to pop over and have a look because they had exactly that infront of them and no idea why it happened. This was also a car on a tune (a directly ported one from the states so no idea how close their fuel is to ours in the UK) and was being used at (or slightly over) its towing limit with a plant trailer pulling a mini digger about. We ended up determining that the exhaust valves (or one of them at least) had overheated to the point that they either warped their stems slightly or simply ran out of clearance with their guides. Either way there were serious heat marks when the guides came out and the inners were marked all the way around (if it was piston hit which caused it you would expect it to be more on one side) so we (me, Paul and two other mechanics) put it down to the exhaust valves simply overheating to the point of seizure wide open at which point it was basically party time in there. Our one took a chunk out of the piston crown on one side too - it looked like a valve head jammed face against the cylinder wall on one of the strokes and took a big hit. That valve head looked like a pringles crisp shape. Awesome damage. Not so awesome for the customer on his 18 month old LC which then needed an engine. Toyota stepped up on that one though and though they obviously refused a warranty claim, they did sell him an engine at cost price rather than retail but he still had to pay main dealer labour. I thought that was pretty good of them to be honest.

would be good to see a close up of the pistons. one of the other pistons looks to have damage as well. looks like a melted lip of the piston bowl which is typical of injector open far to long. that could be due to the tune, but it can also be due to injection failure typically due to fuel contamination.

Poor Bloke - Cracked Two off :( Seen this once, ages ago. That case was put down to valve float/ over-revving, by forced downshift. The valve springs stay intact. In this case, the tune may've caused high EGT? Exh valves binding in the guides? Maybe chipped engines should have EGT gauges & manifold sensor? Whatever... You just keep your Molls happy, John :) That's the main thing

my 1st job (1988) was working for a State Govt agency in accounts payable/receivable. Will never forget the monthly school bus invoices (usually from the local petrol station/mechanic). $200 for diesel, $150 to clean/wash the bus (it was always beneath the bus drivers to get his/her hands dirty), etc., etc. One invoice came in for approx $5000.00 (total engine rebuild??). Further enquiries stated that 3 valves in two cylinders had snapped off and completely destroyed the head, pistons, combustion chambers, etc. Later found out that the valves snapped off as the driver was pulling out of the school to start her run. Instead of stopping to find out what the huge racket was in the engine compartment, she simply turned the radio up.. Sad but true..

I didn't understand pickups until I heard of the 5th wheel towing. Seems meters shorter and better road dynamics for the same size living space?

We thash these 24 hours a day underground on the mine. We treat them far harder than any grey nomad, regardless of any aftermarket tune that this engine may have had. Could be a foreign body ingress? Check the exhaust pipe? Diesels Rev low and these have pretty soft valve springs. Or could just be a manufacturing fault

I'm thinking the LCV8 valve issue would be due to EGTs being too hot in that combustion chamber. Weakens steel in the valves, perfect condition for metal fatigue. My guess is the injector was spraying different to the others, hence the difference in the temps. Remapping done by a sloppy tuner could also play a part in injector cycling, altering the combustion temps

I'm going to go with a slight coolant leak. That combustion chamber looks cleaner than the other three, even taking into account the shot-peening with the valve media. The repeated quenching of hot exhaust valves with a small amount of coolant might lead to fatigue cracking of the valve stem. Maybe I'm imagining it, but I can see a cleaned path on the gasket surface between the coolant passage and the combustion chamber for the top exhaust valve in the picture. Just my guess, and it's probably wrong.

Air cooled VW Beetles dropped the #3 exhaust valve because the vertical oil cooler inside that fan shroud made a heat shadow right there. The exhaust valve expanded with the heat, and once it could not contact the head to cool it off, the results were inevitable. This was most common in hippie owned VW Busses on their pilgrimage to Haight Ashbury, resulting in a less than self sufficient phone call to Daddy. In fact I never heard of even one that made the trip successfully.
