I have an idea (that's why I call myself the AIM); make a snap-on box over the monitor screen that has your picture staring straight forward and has a button battery operated LED light inside. Then you wait about three months for the next warning and have a new battery in the glovebox to fool it for another three months or so. If you patent it and it sells, send me a free one for every new car I end up buying. It won't be many, because I'm 70. Another idea is for makers to have a 3 star version on offer. When someone asks what the difference is, they can say only the eye monitor isn't fitted and it's $150 cheaper.

You watch it will not take an enterprising techie very long before there is a fix for that. I go back 20 years now when I bought one of the latest race replica 1000cc bikes that restricted the availability of full power in first and second gears lest idiots flip them and an enterprising fellow in the US sold an incredibly simple kit which I think just amounted to a nicely packaged 20-cent resistor for around about 30 bucks to solve the problem. Similarly I owned an MR2 that didn't allow disabling of the traction control but I figured out away around it and inserted a switch myself. Certainly not a reason for a half handy bloke not to buy the car. Ditto the stop start.

I bought a new Pajero Sport in 2018…only to find that every time I started the engine I could not access the infotainment system until the ‘AGREE’ button was pressed. After doing this many times every day, often after the car was underway (unnecessary distraction), I wrote to Mitsubishi asking for it to be turned off. No go. After 3 or 4 heated replies I told them that this would be my last Mitsubishi (after 6 Pajeros). They didn’t care. Eventually I found a mechanic who could kill it after 5 seconds each time.

In Thailand, the Mitsubishi dealership also said they were unable to disable that feature. To their credit, they did give me the name and address of a place that could do it. Was all "fixed." The guy can also set up the notifications so that they can be turned off and on, when I want to, and not reset to default each time the vehicle is restarted. I just have to remember to have it all reset to "factory standard" before I trade for the new model, in a year or two.

Have you put an extra zero on those speedo numbers by accident? I only ask because if there's no typing error. Your Wife has driven the equivalent of to the Moon, in a vehicle named after a moon and is now on her way back. But keeping it terrestrial, bring it back to Earth. Your Wife is driving, on average over 200klm every day of the week for the last 6 years. Assuming an average speed of 100km, that's around 3 hours a day behind the wheel, every day for the last 6 years or the last 2,190 days. That's 6570 hours sitting in the driver's seat over 6 years or the equivalent of working an 8 hour day, weekends and 4 weeks annual leave off every year, over 3.5 years and nothing has gone wrong with her car?. I have a 2014 Lancer which has just done 108,000 and just the other day I heard some squeaking from the rear suspension and it's only ever driven on bitumen roads.

That rating should, in my opinion, tell me how about its going to be for me and my passengers in the event of a crash, not about where my eyes are looking etc. This is all just tech being drip fed along the road to fully automated driving. The reality of automated driving, is that it can never be 100% safe with human drivers sharing the road. Only in an environment with 100% automated cars can it be safe and effective. We seem to be marching full steam ahead toward that future unfortunately.

That start/stop shit and driver monitoring system is an absolute deal breaker on any vehicle. 'Someone should take amcap to court for crimes against intelligence, either that or having their heads stuck up their arses', personal opinion. That said, if there's a system that can just simply monitor if your eyes are closing and you're falling asleep, I think that's great. And I've driven a car with stop/start and It counted the fuel savings in millilitres. On a full tank you'd be lucky to save between 200ml to 400 ml. All though was a small car, the cost of of maintaining the stop/start system in terms of batteries and maintenance would exceed not just the fuel saving but the environmental impact of having to replace items related to it.

I've had four Tritons in a row as company vehicles; a 2015, a 2018, a 2021, and just got the last of the pre-facelift 2024s. They have all averaged around 40000kms a year, none of them have ever had so much as a blown fuse or bulb; utterly reliable. My only minor gripe is that the touchscreen infotainment sometimes glitches out or freezes. But other than that they have all been bulletproof. But the electronic nanny bongs and chimes are par for the course on almost any new vehicle. One of the many reasons i bought a used MX5 as my weekender is the almost total lack of them. Great review John, I'd love the opportunity to both, drive and own one. However, if I may speak to your point #10, I'd like to add my own thoughts. I too have driven numerous vehicles over the years (both in a professional capacity as a police man), and other professional driver roles. I have driven number of vehicles with the driver monitoring systems in place. Having a forensic background, a number of points occur to me and annoy me about these systems - even though they have some positive benefits. The systems unfortunately place the warning lights and messages buried deep down in the dash between the tachometer and the speedo with fonts that are often too small and difficult to read, unless you look down specifically to read the message that it's giving you. I've noticed that some systems are alerted by just looking down to check petrol and oil temp which sets these damn warnings off!!! So this goes immediately to your point of having to take your eyes off the road at a crucial time when you need to be paying attention TO THE ROAD! This situation is mindbogglingly stupid and ludicrous. Of even more concern, beyond this dangerous situation - which is clearly the worst aspect of it all - is an even more galling and upsetting in the most extremely worrying terms is the idea that, in the not too distant future these alarms and warnings will be recorded to a database in the car's computer as part of the normal journey log that is recorded for posterity (and most likely sent back to HQ of the requisite brand). Moreover, with the progress of 'tech' we are experiencing these days, in the event of a fatal accident the accident investigation team (ie. the police) will be able to download this data and warnings, and ultimately decide that the driver, who may normally 'not have been considered' at fault, will now 'be' considered at fault because the data from the computer will show that the driver took their eyes off the road and was NOT paying attention. Hence, fines and criminal charges will be laid. Insurance claims will be adversely affected because these systems are recording misinformation milliseconds prior to accidents occurring. In court the driver will have no defence as the data will show your actions. Even worse, in the not to distant future, these systems will move from the now infra-red style to photographic (video) style and courts will SEE the evidence for themselves that drivers have taken their eyes off the road at the time of the accident - mostly likely because of the damn warning they are seeking to acknowledge! This is a very slippery slope we are heading down now. Or am I just to paranoid!?

I have bought the new Triton and I agree about the annoyance of those ‘aids’. However I have now got myself conditioned to the point, that similar to the routine of putting on my seatbelt, I immediately turn the ASG off and the driver monitoring system off. It took a little while but now it is practically automatic on entering the vehicle.

Auto Stop/Start is at all not about saving fuel. It’s about reducing emissions in urban areas when stopped for prolonged periods in traffic or at lights etc. And it does its job very well in that regard. I do totally agree that the implementation needs to be on point however. Decent systems can restart on the fly even when in the process of shutting off (without having to first complete the shutoff to enable the restart). Mine can do that and it’s never ever been a problem when it tries to shut down as a press the throttle - it’s just immediately restarts and I’m moving once the accelerator is depressed (it activates as you lift off the brakes, before you’ve even fully lifted off). I have even used it when towing and it’s ok. I turn it off when off-roading typically though. Lastly - the systems reverting back after a restart isn’t due to the manufacturer telling you that’s how it has to be (well it is) but it’s because of legalisation, often in Europe, mandating it. The manufacturer is required to implement it if they want to sell vehicles in those jurisdictions. So - blame governments not manufacturers. And yes ANCAP Crap.

Hi John, great video, mate. Very honest. You are very correct in your assessment of the "driver monitoring system". It can be very frustrating at times to say the least. While driving my mate's car (Haval Jolion), it drove me insane. However, one small black piece of electrical tape over the camera completely fixes the problem, and it absolutely disables all the warnings. ⚠️ Give it a try in a Triton. It may work...

  • @jerrymyahzcat

The Jolion is the worst new car ever. I drove a rental one for 3 weeks. It’s a prick. It can’t even maintain cruise control on country roads - jams on the brakes at every slight bend in the road before accelerating again. But on a 4 lane motorway is just fine. Also if you indicate to take a motorway exit, halfway through the manoeuvre it would try to force you back on the motorway. I turned off many of the features. I’m surprised the tape worked. I’d expect a beeping and a warning “camera obstructed”. I just turned the camera off.

Just the basics, no bells and whistles and gadgets that I don't want, or need, and just add expense and more points of failure. I don't even use cruise control. No touch screens, no bluetooth telephone calls (although bluetooth music from fone is OK), especially no ability for the manufacturer to trace my personal habits. All those IMEI tracking traffic lights and CCTV are already more than enough. You just can't buy a basic, no frills vehicle any more... even the "base" model is over endowed with gadgetry. No choice. What would be wrong with a really basic model that people could add on the bits they want, as and when needed? Besides, any new car is risking having some bonehead use it for some "touch parking" when next outside the bottle shop... or Supermarket.

Hi John, do you know that a number of manufacturers with Stop/Start feature on the vehicles is quite often deactivated when it’s towing a trailer. It should be simple engineering/wiring to make up a dummy plug to plug-in for the vehicle to think that it’s towing a trailer and deactivate the stop start feature permanently . Cannot believe that someone has not made them, but I know it’s possible with my electronics background but not necessary with my land cruiser 78 . By the way, the video camera that keeps an eye of your alertness a friend who drives big trucks gets annoyed with this feature too because he takes his eyes away from the to look at the mirrors and the warnings keep going off every time he looks in the side mirrors to check when he’s turning directions, etc and they turn it off

But the nannies, especially the driver distraction monitor, is a deal-breaker. As Mitsubishi isn't coming to the table at this stage to allow it to remember my settings between ignition cycles, any permanent off for the nannies or the stop start will likely require an aftermarket reflash or OBDII dongle, so that puts your warranty at risk. And then there's the real question: Why would I want to pay extra for a new model, then go out and pay again to have someone take the nannies that I never wanted or asked for and have them disabled or set to default off, when the model without them is, for now, sitting right there on the lot not even run-in? Also, having sat in one, if even I could disable it permanently, that camera sticking out the steering column obstructs part of the dashboard from my view, and I couldn't adjust the wheel to a point where either the camera or the top of the wheel doesn't block part of the dashboard. Less annoying then a cacophony of bongs, bings and orange messages, yes, but still annoying.

John, have you tried getting some plonker from ANCAP onto your channel & asking him/her how all these supposed Driver Assist Warnings (DAW) benefit the driver? Where is the hard evidence that it works re: accident mitigation? As mentioned, depending on the state, you can get pinged $1000 & 3-5 demerit points for a quick glance at your phone, but no mention re: all those annoying, distracting dings/chimes/flashing warnings, etc. that immediately take your eyes off the road.

That so called safety camera creates inattention, inattention is a main cause of car crashes. And who wants the engine restart lag when you want/need to run the gauntlet, every split second counts when driving in traffic. Hopefully the Japanese engineers understand your review (the Aussie lingo) Great review John 👏 👌 👍

I enjoyed this video and I agree with Mitsubishi being a good brand. When I was a Courier driver I drove the Mitsubishi Express Van and it was so reliable.

Stop start hack: insert a dummy plug into the tow bar connector. At least works for Subaru's. Facial warning hack: tape over the camera. If it like the Subies, it will beep a few times and then stop.

They have achieved a bit of an F100 bonnet! I have a 2014 triton and it is not ‘tactically’ high off the ground or aggressive it is just a perfect vehicle, manual , and it has taken us with no complaints around Australia, west, east , north and south very satisfactorily. Now they have adopted the Brute look, copying ford and trying to copy the wasteful metal of Rams, Chevs, hummers, Abrams etc. Luckily my model triton is polite and basic. My other car is a Haval h6 which is a revelation of comfort and luxury (to me) which is similarly overcomplicated but all the “help” can be turned off, so far. Love them both.

Havel being Chinese I highly recommend you to replace all oils to Amsoil when you can or if available in your country. It will really improve and lengthen long term reliability and cut running costs down.

Just after watching this an ad for the Triton was on television showing one of the driver's aids beeping like an old school video game and followed by the voice over touting it's 5 star ANCAP rating. I was one of the wised up viewers.

I do love my 2011 Triton, after the debacle of the engine overheat fiasco was resolved in my favour I forgave them for not actually telling me what they had done and why they had left myself and a young horse in a trailer on a blind corner on a 100km hr rd. The super select is fantastic, it loves to tow (sucks a lot more juice, but horses aren't light!) and the horses travel very happily and it is our go to for everything farm related.I would love a fancy new one, but it's just hard to justify the spend when it's still so reliable after all these years (of proper maintenance of course). But when the time comes I will. Thanks mate!

oh Jonny the boy, you've done it again, an easy work around, 1)stick a little photo of you on the steering column in front of the camera - that'll fool it, 2)stick a piece of string across the button for engine stop start override connected to the brake pedal lever, that way every application of the brake will be asking it to not turn off the engine.
